Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle tv Review

CLAMP's Sakura Kinomoto and Syaoran Li are back, but they're not the same characters we've come to know from Cardcaptor Sakura. This time, our pair is from the magical country of Clow, where Sakura is the beloved princess and Syaoran is a commoner working as an archeologist. He's tasked with exploring the ruins of Clow, which seem to hold magical power. Our two characters are destined for each other, but many perils lay in their path.

When visiting the ruins, Sakura is mesmerized and drawn into a strange gateway on the wall. Evil forces are at work and try to steal her away to another dimension. Syaoran prevents her from going but, in the process, scatters her feathers (representing her memories) across multiple worlds. With Sakura unconscious, Syoaran must travel to each world and recover Sakura's memories. Upon visiting the dimensional witch, Syaoran is given two traveling companions, each with their own reasons for going on a journey between worlds. They are also given Mokona, a magical creature that allows them to communicate and travel between worlds.

Their journey begins here and many dangers await them on the road ahead.

Story & Characters

Many people here must be great CLAMP fans right? This series is not to be missed. Actually this was my second series watched that was made by CLAMP. The characters are surprisingly all that CLAMP has previously created. Like Chii in chobits and Sakura in Card Captor Sakura. The really cool stuff is that the it is able to go on and on as the story involves travelling in many different worlds. But the shortcoming is that the series lacks twists. Only excitement is not enough right? This story features characters from all over the CLAMP world.. even XxX holic and even MK rayearth. The story is about our braveheart Syaoran who had been a childhood friend with the princess of clow sakura who is secretly in love with him. Later when the "baddie" tried to take over the pricess' power, Syaoran jumped out the save sakura thus breaking her heart. They then step onto a quest of restoring the princess's lost Tsubasa!

Art

If you had the habit of buying both the anime and manga then i will recommend the manga. The artwork in manga is far better than the anime.
The overall art is pretty well done. Special Effects are wonderful in the anime. Manga doesn't lose out in character details either.
The only problem encountered is that many scene doesn't correspond in the anime. Negligible but weird haha.. the actions in the manga are drawed perfectly but in the anime we need some movement thinking.. it's always like this, if the anime doesn't focus on fighting the actions are drawn slackishly!!!
So folks, buy the manga.. it's way better!! Yeah.. the anime's pretty slow too.

Sound

Kinya - Blaze, as the opening gives the episodes a adventurous feeling which is really cool. One of my favourite songs.
A Song of Storm and Fire, this song is like the main theme for the series, most of the cool scene involve this piece. It's a really enjoyable song.
Maaya - Loop, as the ending, it's both a lil' sad and romantic. It maybe represents the relationship between.. NO SPOILERS!!! LoL..
The background music toggles in lots of worlds.. it's really nice as it fits into most scenes. You can experience the worlds' vastness with the music itself!

The songs can be found in the resource page in the link above...

Presentation

The coversation of this series is all different everywhere. It's good to have a change of new stuff all the times right? In this series the imagination runs wild. Cool and incredible people and organisms pops out everywhere. It's a true Final Fantasy. Especially when featuring the old folks that we cannot know them any better. It's pretty humourous with Fye and Kurogane quarrelling all the times. Really cool and addictive i should say.. i bought every book on the first it is published!!
Talk about action.. it's really cool in the manga.. all the movements are drawn perfectly.. different techniques performed by many different character at a single time can be really jaw dropping! The anime had many parts cut off so action reduces.. those anime action fans will weep! LoL.. yeah it's good to get the information before hand on which version is better. I had watched many series all on the best format. Most on manga though.
Outfit design had changed from boring uniforms to all sorts of clothing.
Even experts designer may not think of this cool suits. If you just put all these into one it's really a super fantastic series. GOOD ACTION FOOD ART GOOD MUSIC GOOD LOOKS. who would have any complains?

I think the story part should contain a more elaborated teaser about the plot.. (not so much to give spoilers though XP) And i think you should stick on reviewing the anime (mostly) X3 hehe, though I dont really mind bits and pieces abt the manga as well ;) quite a good review I should say...

One comment about the anime, I do not quite like it cos I think it is too slow-paced x_x ... found so many blank moment and weird silence in between, it really frustate me to the point that I stopped watching it altogether >_<

tareren is right, TRC is one of the most slow-paced anime you could ever find. In fact, I'll just right out and say it: it's boring. Long drawn out scenes, unnecessary flashbacks, people making comments about how strong someone is, lame fights with no meaning, Syaoran using the vocabulary of a two year old, horrible use of Kujiara music, nothing coming of character interactions, no character development, minimal plot development, mysteries that don't increase the suspense, random not-cute Mokona one liners...I can go on, but too tired.

I've watch 11 episodes and could not go on.

haha i had found this anime rather boring at first too!! pace is super duper slow! but i carried on watching since my friend kept saying it's very good. one of the reason which kept me watching was seeing the determined syaoran. he's character in here is very nice! sakura is rather pretty in here too! though more than first half of the anime had her sleeping...

I just started reading the manga, and can say I'm hooked. I'll be finishing this one to the end, easily.

must pay 2k life points to use urself graverobber LoL.. Although the series is interesting.. it did drag for very long and short suspenses was both good and bad i must say.

I wish I could see the anime !!!
Great that you reviewed it yeah !!
From what I've read around the web - the anime is a bit of a let down due to its slow pace.

I like Tsubasa Chronicles, it's a really good series! But personally, I like the mangas better. I just finished watching Tsubasa ep. 26 and I was sad because it was the last episode of the season!~!~! But don't worry, there's gonna be another series, but sadly it's gonna air in the spring which is a loooong wait!

I also thought the story was very slow at the start..but I was still hooked to it because the adventures seem so interesting. I was very unfortunate to have been deceived by the number of seasons...I had initially thought the anime ends at ep 26 but no! It's going to take 3 years to finish airing....T_T
I don't quite agree with the art rating though....I love clamp drawing, especially Tsubasa Chronicle...probably the best part of the anime!

It's nice both as anime and manga. Love them both! ;)

  10. kimtsin Nov 14, 2005

hey hey.. its an excellent story.. but jus that the date of it being published is getting a little slower.. haha.. well.. i jus love the story.. hee..

Some of you are harsh! Everything is awesome! The anime and manga vary from each... so it gives you reason to read/watch both! CLAMP has done an excellent job... I just wish I didn't have to wait till the end of 2007 to finish it. *sniff*
    Season 1= April 2005-October 2005
    Season 2= April 2006-October 2006
    Season 3= April 2007-October 2007

i just started to watch this anime and i think over all this anime is nice, but the storyline is a bit slow and sometimes can be bit boring, esp when syaoran and his party arrived on the something.. game land

  13. Linkplayer Nov 22, 2005

the music and graphics are awesome (i don't read manga's, i only watch anime so sue me!), fighting scenes are impressive most of the times and the characters are very good(Kurogane and Fai anyone)

but story really needs more development and Syaoran's Keigo gets on my nerves and when are Syaoran and Sakura going to kiss already!?

all in all a great anime with some flaws, hopefully those improve in the next seasons

  14. SanzosSaru Sep 09, 2006

The anime is horrible The manga is good. With such extremes, you should stick to one or the other, but trying to review both at the same time is suicide. It's a very confusing review, because it goes back and forth between them.

Also, I found special effects and fights incredibly poor quality in the anime. Compared to what I was expecting, to other series nowadays and specially to other Clamp series.
Too slow, dialogue is forced, even less character development of Kuro anf Fye(specially Fye, who gets very little of it already in the manga...if they cut it shorter... >.<) and almost all the humour is gone from the anime.
