Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle tv Review

CLAMP's Sakura Kinomoto and Syaoran Li are back, but they're not the same characters we've come to know from Cardcaptor Sakura. This time, our pair is from the magical country of Clow, where Sakura is the beloved princess and Syaoran is a commoner working as an archeologist. He's tasked with exploring the ruins of Clow, which seem to hold magical power. Our two characters are destined for each other, but many perils lay in their path.

When visiting the ruins, Sakura is mesmerized and drawn into a strange gateway on the wall. Evil forces are at work and try to steal her away to another dimension. Syaoran prevents her from going but, in the process, scatters her feathers (representing her memories) across multiple worlds. With Sakura unconscious, Syoaran must travel to each world and recover Sakura's memories. Upon visiting the dimensional witch, Syaoran is given two traveling companions, each with their own reasons for going on a journey between worlds. They are also given Mokona, a magical creature that allows them to communicate and travel between worlds.

Their journey begins here and many dangers await them on the road ahead.

Story & Characters

In the mythical kingdom of Clow, the story starts off with our main protagonist Shaoran, a brilliant but romantically clueless teenager and his childhood friend, Princess Sakura whom has adequate trouble trying to find the right timing to confess her feelings. Unfortunately, on one fateful day as Shaoran was working on an archeological excavation, he stumbles upon a mysterious symbol of an unknown origin. Sakura, as if drawn to it unconsciously, enters and activates the symbol which robs her of her memories, leaving only a lifeless shell in Shaoran’s arms.

In an attempt to save his Princess Sakura, Shaoran meets with the Witch of Dimensions. There he learns that in order to save his childhood friend, he would have to travel though parallel worlds and recover her scattered memories. However, he is not alone in this dangerous mission. Joined by the mysterious wizard Fye and the short tempered ninja Kurogane, their dangerous journey across parallel worlds has just begun...

Based off of Clamp's previous works, Tsubasa : RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE melds the worlds and characters of seemingly diverse backgrounds into one intricate and exciting story~~

Art

As usual, Clamp continues to set the bar high for manga artwork. Each scene is highly detailed and well drawn. The action flow smoothly from one frame to the next. Characters are beautifully designed and easy to identify (especially if you have already read them in other mangas) The worlds our heroes travel through are impressively designed and layed out. All in all, Tsubasa is a visual feast to the eyes, offering some of the best in the medium of manga art.

Compared to Clamp’s previous works, it feels more sketchy and less detailed, but overall it’s quality work nonetheless. The paper quality for the regular edition is a bit lacking. I recommend purchasing the special editions of each volume which is significantly larger and printed on much higher quality paper.

Sound

[Since this review is based off the manga adaption, this area would be used to review the dialogue flow and pacing]

For once in a shounen manga, the dialogue actually moves quickly and effortlessly! Instead of rehashing the same old sequences you find in fight scenes and dialogue, each chapter introduces something new the story and pulls you forward to the next. The dialogue between the main characters are well written and in many cases provides a deeper glimpse into their individual personas. The overall mood is mostly serious, but sometimes there are little touches of humor to lighten the mood.

(Though there is no music, I would recommend listening to the Cardcaptor Sakura OST while reading Tsubasa : RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE)

Presentation

I wasn’t particularly fond of the fact that Tsubasa being a crossover Clamp’s previous works. Crossovers usually meant that the people producing them have run out of ideas and are just sticking their older, better characters into the story for lack of original material. However, I was proven completely wrong when I finished the first volume. It turned out much better than I expected, the crossovers were done smoothly and perfectly. It didn't seem like they were thrown in just for fanservice, but moreso the fact that the story needed such a character for it to progress any further.

The story isn't entirely orginal, but that doesn't null the fact that Tsubasa is indeed enjoyable to read. The characters are charming and unforgettable, especially if you've read them in other titles. The unique balance between comedy, action, and drama is Clamp’s signature style, drawing readers from all walks of life into laughing at the lighthearted moments, to cheer for the hero's triumphant return, and even cry when farewells come to soon.

I agree with you! Only, I'd probably have given it a higher rating, just because I now seem to have an obsession with it ^^. And I've never really seen/ read anything else by clamp... Hm...

    So nicely written!

    I've actually already bought Tsubasa.... And though it's not the best manga I've come across, it's still one that's worth picking up. Currently, only 3 volumes are out in English.... The story between Syaoran and Sakura is so sad ;_; It makes me cry ~_~;

Tsubasa is great and I set a review up for it my self in another name but people says my review is horrible and that hurts me... I'll write one up myself again in this name... Why do people have to say such horrible things? OX

I agree with your ratings on your review though I'd give it a higher total rating. Tsubasa is one of the animes that I've watched so far with really touching moments and I feel sorry for Syaoran and Sakura had lost their relationship. I think its a really touching anime and it leaves you wanting mroe. clamp Rocks indeed :nya:
