Bleach

Bleach tv Review

The series begins in the human world, with the sudden entry of a stranger into Ichigo's bedroom. This stranger is Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper (in the Japanese version, a shinigami, literally God of Death). After an ensuing conversation, Ichigo and Rukia are forced into combat against a hollow (evil spirit). Rukia is disabled, and forced to transfer her power into Ichigo, transforming him into a Soul Reaver. As it turns out, Ichigo is very powerful, and even has a semi-unique zanpukat? (sword that is his primary weapon, it is much larger than most). Ichigo makes quick work of the hollow, and Rukia leaves.

The next day, she shows up in his classroom, apparently a normal human student. It turns out that Ichigo has completely absorbed her abilities, and she must recover them by using a temporary human form, Gigai. It is later revealed that the Gigai she entered was specially designed by Urahara and given to her. In the mean-time, Ichigo must take over her job, cleansing the hollows in the region.

As Ichigo get involved in a closer friendship level to Rukia, Ichigo got more to know about Shinigami life and its issues.

Story & Characters

Bleach: a very popular and long-running anime. To put it frankly, Bleach is a great way to kill 22 minutes of your life. But enough of my harping on it when you haven't even heard how I feel about the story, let's start reviewing it.

Bleach's story revolves around mystery and cliff-hangers. Sometimes, it's intriguing wondering who that culprit could be. But overall, the story is a bit lame. A lot of it focuses on big major "climactic" fight scenes that are so predictable and are just a waste of animation and time. And what is up with one character in a fight using their "ultimate prowess" and them critically injuring the other and then the other says something liek, "Now it's time to stop playing. I'ts time to really fight." How many times do you hear that? And we just go back and forth between the two competitors ablilities and who can trump the other. The story also raised a few questions that are never answered and I suppose we're just supposed to forget. What happens when you die in the afterlife? Are you just gone forever? Is your soul recylced? How long do you live in the afterlife? So many questions left unanswered...

The humor is mediocre and comes up at the oddest of times. In the middle of what is supposed to be an epic fight, some idiot will say something "humorous" and ruin the mood. It was irritiating, to say the least.

The characters are VERY cliche' and don't make you feel for them. I kinda wanna kill some of them. And nobody dies in this anime except, of course, the villains and antagonists. But even if some main character died, I wouldn't feel for them. This show fails horribly in this aspect. Bleach had a good skeleton of a story, but with the dreadful characters, awful humor, and annoying fight scenes, it is reduced drastically.

Art

The artwork bothered me a lot while I was watching it. The art style is very sharp and, I know this will sound a bit childish, but "poky." Nothing flows. The character designs are very weird, too. And not even in a refreshing way. Hardly any of the characters are attractive. And the girls are way too busty (except for Rukia, who is known for her flat chest). And Orihime (Inoue) was just flat-out awful looking. The scenery is good, nothing special. The action sequences are not animated very well. I have seen good action sequences in anime, and this one doesn't have any. Some of the opening/ending sequences have some pretty good animation, but not excellent.

Sound

The backround music is forgettable as in most animes. There are a few good opening and ending themes, but to make up for the good themes, Bleach puts in the worst themes I have ever heard to go along with them. The Japanese seiyus are good and suiting to all the characters. The English dub voices....not so much. The sound isn't bad, it just isn't good. Some good themes were "Life" by Yui, "Life is like a Boat" by Rie Fu, "Hanabi" by Ikimono-Gakari, "D-technolife" by Uverworld", and "Rolling Star" by Yui. Sound is pretty much the only thing Bleach has going for it.

Presentation

After all the hype, after all the great comments I had heard from friends and people on the internet, Bleach was an EPIC dissapointment. From the characters, to the artwork, the series was just plain awful in my opinion. Why did I watch so many episodes? I was hoping that it would get better, for everything that everyone said to finally come together. But it didn't. If the story could have been better and the characters more enjoyable, it truly could have backed up all the hype around it. It had so much going for it, but it fell flat on its face. Please don't waste your time on this unless you like to murder time for fun.

I'm sorry, but the art is just a matter of opinion, so I have to disagree with you about it. I LOVE Kubo's art! About the story, for me, Bleach was good, very good, at the beginning. At nowadays, Bleach is no longer Bleach. You see characters that people love being forgoten (my favourite stayed 110 chapters withouth appearing! That's very sad!), and others (a lot) not well explored. About being cliche, tell me, what kind of anime/manga is not cliche? Specially shounen? All the shounens are cliche, I mean, most of all. When I see a new anime/manga, the first thing that can be noticed is that all the characters are the same to other stories. Is just a few mangas and animes that are so different and speciall. Bleach, for a shounen, is very very good. In some points I agree with you. Kubo doesn't like puting details, like "what happens when a shinigami dies", which I think is too sad. I agree that the humor is very idiot, and sometimes is so idiot that you laugh. Another negative point is that almost all the characters are very stressed, the only think they know what to do is think they're better. The sound... I have to say that I don't enjoy so much. Some musics are good, others are awful.

One point I don't know if anyone mentioned before is the relationship between the characters. No, not as a shoujo or something like that, but, for example, Ichigo and Rukia. I love how they interact, is so well done. Their friendship is something that I really like to see. The condition "captain" and "lieutenant" is also, for me, interesting. One is there for another, and their bond are usually strong, even if is just from one of them (Nemu and Mayuri, Hinamori and Aizen... And Hitsugaya and Hinamori, Renji and Rukia: they were childhood friends, and I love specially the relationship between hitsugaya and hinamori).

So, to end all of this...
I think your review was well writed, so, congratulations x) It's your opinion at all, isn't it?
I just disagree, I think diferent about the anime/manga.

(p.s: I'm sorry for my bad english! x__x)

I...didn't really like the anime, I did however find the Manga to be much more enjoyable. But even now the recent chapters of the manga are really starting to bug me. I agree with what you said about the awkward humour xD because that's true sheet. Sometimes its funny but not in the middle of a fight and such. It's an alright show over all is what I say...

This review is extremely biased and very negative towards bleach you make it seem like it is one of the worst animes to ever be created when quit frankly it is one of the best animes out at the moment.
personally i think this review is ok but negative feedback is too much.

well,i do like bleach, and if i wrote a review i'd give it an 8.well,i agree on some points like how the fights drag for MANY episodes,as for the humor,i guess it's OKAY,but maybe not mediocre.anyways, reviews are based on personal opinions, and i think you really did show some weak points on the show.thanks anyway (x

You make some good points. Its your opinion. But DUDE YOU REALLY THINK THAT THE ART SUCKS. I really love the art. To me I think that the characters look creative. Nobody else would have thought of those designs. I dont really care if the girls are good-looking or not but most of the guys are hot. Including GRIMMJOW! All the parts with him in it are awesome. But the parts without him are sorta decent. And the fillers are blah but the zanpakto filler is just great. I think its better than the main plot.

Bleach's art is soo damn bad that it looks like a child art.I don't like it.it's boring.

  14. metzalx Jan 09, 2010

With such a negative review, I really wonder how long you actually watched the anime for. Perhaps you could enlighten us on that?

I agree with you on some parts of the anime, and I must say for a lot of the fillers I feel that way. Especially pointless boring ones like the Bounto arc. But I think the main storyline is pretty good, a lot of secrets get unravelled along the way and I feel it's getting more exciting. Comic relief is good too, IMO. Especially the Shinigami Picturebook series at the end of some episodes. Personally, I actually like it when someone says something funny in the middle of a fight. But maybe that's just me >< But the thing I love most about the series is the overall concept: shinigami, hollows, vizards, espadas, soul society, etc.

About the artwork, I'll have to disagree with you. Kubo's artwork is absolutely awesome in my opinion, and that's one of the reasons why I read the manga. I can guess why you think the way you do since the artwork in the anime is not as good (yes some parts of the character can be skewed), but that's the anime. The anime studio wouldn't do great artwork for a single frame that's only going to last a fraction of a second. The artwork in the manga is extremely detailed, and Kubo's style is very refreshing compared to other artists.

    So i guess its fine

this review was based mostly on the earlier episodes it seems, they did get better at the theme music and art later on ALTHOUGH the fillers jacked it up pretty badly yes, and oh yeah people feel stuff for the characters there are fan clubs for certain characters and hater clubs for some *hates kisuke but is a fan of Yoruichi* Yeah its also based on cliffhangers, but its an attempt to get you hooked and its worked on many people,I mean its enough to get it a proposal from Warner Bros for a live action movie on it. Well You do have your own opinion and I respect that so I'm not gonna call u a idiot or anything.

  19. AniFre101 Apr 23, 2010

I don't agree with Art since there's so many likes and dislikes about that along with tastes. But for a review, it's great.

klaro k es genial solo que se la jalan con eso de los episodios extrar saltense eso! pero de ahi en fuera la series esta super! ^^

Bleach is not a time waster i think u should get a life and Anyone insulting bleach duznt no anything. I watch it in Japanese and I luv it it is so entertaining even for my 14 year bro he is totally hooked up. The best thing about bleach is entertaining but one thing i get fed up lately is how they drag on episodes which is a gud thing but not so good for those who have to wait for the collection. they should just conclude i am in episode 330 i dont like to wait...

  22. SchRita Aug 27, 2010

Great review, but I still don't like it.

  23. yeppunda Oct 10, 2010

"Bleach's story revolves around mystery and cliff-hangers. Sometimes, it's intriguing wondering who that culprit could be." I'm guessing you haven't even finished the first major Soul Society arc, because it's pretty clear who the culprit is from then on. Bleach doesn't revolve around mystery and cliff-hangers, it revolves around the concept of "nakama" (friends/comrades), much like many other shounen animes/mangas. While who the culprit is is obvious, it's intriguing how the main character, Ichigo, has such a strong will to save every one of his friends, and how that evokes his underlying powers.

My point is, you haven't watched enough of Bleach to judge it. Or maybe I'm wrong, and you've watched more than a hundred episodes, but you're not a fan of this genre, in which case you wouldn't understand what's alluring about such animes. If that's the case, you should state your CONTEXT. State what types of animes you usually like/dislike, so that people who are taking your review into consideration when deciding if they should watch this show will know if they like the same types of anime as you do.
