Bleach

Bleach tv Review

The series begins in the human world, with the sudden entry of a stranger into Ichigo's bedroom. This stranger is Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper (in the Japanese version, a shinigami, literally God of Death). After an ensuing conversation, Ichigo and Rukia are forced into combat against a hollow (evil spirit). Rukia is disabled, and forced to transfer her power into Ichigo, transforming him into a Soul Reaver. As it turns out, Ichigo is very powerful, and even has a semi-unique zanpukat? (sword that is his primary weapon, it is much larger than most). Ichigo makes quick work of the hollow, and Rukia leaves.

The next day, she shows up in his classroom, apparently a normal human student. It turns out that Ichigo has completely absorbed her abilities, and she must recover them by using a temporary human form, Gigai. It is later revealed that the Gigai she entered was specially designed by Urahara and given to her. In the mean-time, Ichigo must take over her job, cleansing the hollows in the region.

As Ichigo get involved in a closer friendship level to Rukia, Ichigo got more to know about Shinigami life and its issues.

Story & Characters

Bleach: a very popular and long-running anime. To put it frankly, Bleach is a great way to kill 22 minutes of your life. But enough of my harping on it when you haven't even heard how I feel about the story, let's start reviewing it.

Bleach's story revolves around mystery and cliff-hangers. Sometimes, it's intriguing wondering who that culprit could be. But overall, the story is a bit lame. A lot of it focuses on big major "climactic" fight scenes that are so predictable and are just a waste of animation and time. And what is up with one character in a fight using their "ultimate prowess" and them critically injuring the other and then the other says something liek, "Now it's time to stop playing. I'ts time to really fight." How many times do you hear that? And we just go back and forth between the two competitors ablilities and who can trump the other. The story also raised a few questions that are never answered and I suppose we're just supposed to forget. What happens when you die in the afterlife? Are you just gone forever? Is your soul recylced? How long do you live in the afterlife? So many questions left unanswered...

The humor is mediocre and comes up at the oddest of times. In the middle of what is supposed to be an epic fight, some idiot will say something "humorous" and ruin the mood. It was irritiating, to say the least.

The characters are VERY cliche' and don't make you feel for them. I kinda wanna kill some of them. And nobody dies in this anime except, of course, the villains and antagonists. But even if some main character died, I wouldn't feel for them. This show fails horribly in this aspect. Bleach had a good skeleton of a story, but with the dreadful characters, awful humor, and annoying fight scenes, it is reduced drastically.

Rating: 4

Art

The artwork bothered me a lot while I was watching it. The art style is very sharp and, I know this will sound a bit childish, but "poky." Nothing flows. The character designs are very weird, too. And not even in a refreshing way. Hardly any of the characters are attractive. And the girls are way too busty (except for Rukia, who is known for her flat chest). And Orihime (Inoue) was just flat-out awful looking. The scenery is good, nothing special. The action sequences are not animated very well. I have seen good action sequences in anime, and this one doesn't have any. Some of the opening/ending sequences have some pretty good animation, but not excellent.

Rating: 6

Sound

The backround music is forgettable as in most animes. There are a few good opening and ending themes, but to make up for the good themes, Bleach puts in the worst themes I have ever heard to go along with them. The Japanese seiyus are good and suiting to all the characters. The English dub voices....not so much. The sound isn't bad, it just isn't good. Some good themes were "Life" by Yui, "Life is like a Boat" by Rie Fu, "Hanabi" by Ikimono-Gakari, "D-technolife" by Uverworld", and "Rolling Star" by Yui. Sound is pretty much the only thing Bleach has going for it.

Presentation

After all the hype, after all the great comments I had heard from friends and people on the internet, Bleach was an EPIC dissapointment. From the characters, to the artwork, the series was just plain awful in my opinion. Why did I watch so many episodes? I was hoping that it would get better, for everything that everyone said to finally come together. But it didn't. If the story could have been better and the characters more enjoyable, it truly could have backed up all the hype around it. It had so much going for it, but it fell flat on its face. Please don't waste your time on this unless you like to murder time for fun.

wow :S why are you so negative?
at least write something GOOD in this, becuase Bleach is one of the most popular animes around the world now, and it's one of my fav anime's too. I highly disagree with everything you wrote. The music is amazing, the characters and animated better than naruto ( my opinion ) and its not a waste of 22 minutes.

Well, that's your opinion, and I respect it, but going as far as saying that "if you want to waste your time" or "If you like to murder time for fun"... etc, is a bit drastic, and rather insulting to all of us who love the series to death. It's okay if you don't like it (I don't understand why, though), but there's a way to say things without plainly insulting people's likings. That "wasting time" part, felt like you were calling us idiots or ignorants, something like that. And I can't understand people that say "I love Bleach! Thanks for the review" when you bashed every aspect of the series and spat on it, but well...

I am fan of this anime, but i understand your statements in the review why you dont like it..actually, for me its not the same piece as it used to be @ the beginning, load of fillers suck, story goes forward pretty slow when you expect nice fights, boobs etc. [and there are only few episodes i skipped, something that i dont do if i watch any non-dropped anime]. On the other hand, latest fillers are out of story, but i find them interesting to watch, despite the fact that i'd love to see the continuation of main story. Also I enjoy the animation, and music.
Well...still its mainstream anime and cant expect that everyone loves it :D
anyways, thx for the review :)

When someone dies in the afterlife, they are reincarnated into a human again. Then when that human dies, they go into the afterlife and the cycle continues over and over again. If that makes any sense.

Seriously have we run out of reviews and we've put this one here ?!

This person has apparently no clue about this type of shows, it is like me going to give a bad review to DNA Angel, you know a romantic kinda show
All of the people i know who like Bleach consider DNAngel crap, is anyone following ?

The show is immensely popular for reasons that the reviewer has apparently NO CLUE, he missed out on everything in the review

    Chracters
The show is 90% masterfully crafted characters, many cliches, reoccurring themes from similar shows yes BUT here they are crafted so nicely are with such respect to the genre noone will complain because it is not repeating it is building some thing new and fresh on a familiar pattern.

    Art;
Stylistically Tite Kubo is exceptionally creative and innovative in bringing a real life feeling to obsucre characters and vice versa he is maintaining the earthly style of "normal" characters while with the slightest of changes he brings them to the level of otherworldly figures. Animation wise the show one of the most expensive shounen shows out there. Of course quality gets weak overall when we are talking about long running shows but when its good it's almost unmatched. Some of the openings are just art; literally; perspective, style and life to a series of static pictures, this is a first. Some of the hollow creatures can look some Neon Genesis designs in the eye

humor is the shows weak point overall / and the creators himself said he is not interested in exploring the romantic side of the characters too much, so BLEACH is lacking there if someone cares.

    Sound
the score used in the series totally binds the whole thing together, tension all over when it comes to anticipation, some of the best tracks when it comes to battle sequences, and some very appropriate and never over the top dramatic melodies. Some very weird ambiance distorted guitar sounds upsetting squicky noises that give masterfully the feeling of the "other world" invading into ours.

BLEACH gives that feeling of another one shounen fighting series and does use many usual tricks of the genre, but it is a genre that was getting old and BLEACH feels like that kinda show that wants to sum up all the better parts of the genre and move on, with a refreshing style drawing wise being its main weapon.

BLEACH anime for a show of its kind gets a solid 8 out 10

EDIT i just read this "How long do you live in the afterlife? " as part of the reviewers negative points...
IT'S THE AFTER LIFE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LIVE THERE FOREVER, did you see any buddhas ? no, then it's FOREVER
