Shingetsutan Tsukihime

Shingetsutan Tsukihime tv,manga,game Review

Shiki Tohno was severely injured in a large accident in his childhood. After miraculously surviving the event, he was sent away from the family to recuperate. As a result of the injury, he is now able to see "life lines" on objects and people which, when cut, will destroy them.

After years away from home, Shiki moves back following the death of the head of the Tohno family. While walking home from school, he meets a beautiful woman whom he is inexplicably drawn to kill. At firs he thinks her murder was all just a nightmare - until she reappears in front of him.

It turns out the woman is Arcueid Brunestud, and a vampire princess! She promptly recruits Shiki afterwards to help fight Roa, the antagonist vampire currently on a killing spree.

Story & Playability

Tsukihime is one that I've not found cloned by other series except for Fate/Stay Night which was done by the same studio, TYPE-MOON. The vampire scenario is one that keeps you in suspense throughout the series. Also, the eluding backgrounds of some of the characters will keep you watching just so you can find out the reasoning behind things. From a wider perspective, the elusive backstory of the vampires and the 'church' help add a sense of mystery to the story. Seeing as how Tsukihime was originally a computer RPG-style game and manga, the transition to anime was sketchy. The overall story was maintained, but some of the deeper aspect that were describe in the manga were left out. Acrueid's complete past as well as Ciel's identity cover-up are only a few examples of this. Also, parts of the story in the anime seem rushed thru as if the series was trying to cover everything in the manga with a smaller budget. For example, the bond between Acrueid and Shiki seemed to rush into intimacy without any particular reasoning other than their somewhat business affiliation. Had the series spanned a few more episodes, I feel that some of the story could have flowed more smoothly and the original outline would have been done greater justice. It's hard to express what was actually missing in the series without providing spoilers. Fans will simply have to experience both the manga and anime to compare and contrast the two.

Graphics

The artwork is Tsukihime is very consistent and the characters blend nicely with the story. The overall designs are solid and the depiction of their expressions help you grasp when something is indeed in effect. The background artwork is well done as the darker scenarios help you grasp the dark themed story with a sense of some understanding. You won't find anything exceptional to rave about with Tsukihime, but you will find the character designs appealing at the least.

Sound

The music in Tsukihime is one of particular excellence. The introduction theme "The Sacred Moon" is an instrumental piece that gives off a sense of fear, emotion, but at the same time, letting off a sense of hope for peace. The haunting chorus and steady rhythm give off a sense of inner fear that is very befitting for the series. While it is relatively short without an extended version, it's hard not to appreciate the excellent intro. The background music in Tsukihime is standard chill-factor music that will keep your heart beating in intense situations. The piano pieces are excellent at giving off a false sense of security with the series as well. Fans of OSTs from animes like Elfen Lied will not be disappointed. The ending theme "Rinne no Hate ni" / "At The End of Destiny" is one that has a slightly more uplifting tone than the rest of the music which leads it to have a sense of non-belonging. While a peaceful sounding piece, it does not seem to fit well with the rest of the music. If the aspect of the ending theme was leave the viewer with a sense of relaxation, then it did accomplish this. However, when compared to the intro "The Sacred Moon", it really finds itself at odds.

Fun

The overall presentation of Tsukihime is wonderful and quite enjoyable without going over the top. The artwork and music blend together rather nicely to give off a haunting feeling without scaring the wits out of the viewer. Some of the aspects that were important in the manga/game were left out of the anime which will leave some viewers with a sense of bewilderment. However, if you ignore some of the lesser details, then the story flows well-enough from episode to episode. A great aspect of Tsukihime, is that due to its short episode span, all of the episodes are on topic without senseless filler. However, like stated before, the short span also fights the deep storyline. Fans of series such as Elfen Lied and the manga Fate/Stay Night will find Tsukihime to be quite enjoyable. If between the two, would recommend the manga over the anime, but both are of noticeable mention.

Ummm.... I think your review is generally fine, but I think the story part is quite sketchy... before criticizing, I think it is important to let out some part of the story so that we know a bit more about the anime :P
Some more stuff could be elaborated at the art section, though it is fine the way it is now ;)
Quite a good review, but I think you could elaborate more and give clearer description ;D

Oh, I think tsukihime is so so... and though the music is good, I think it only deserves 8/10 at most :P

Thank you for your comment on my review. I would have provided more emphasis on the actually story of the anime, but it's relatively hard to do without actually giving away spoilers. I'll try to adjust it a little so that is a little more emphasized. :)

    good job man!
but i'd not have given more than 8

Hmm, a good review, although I thought the art was a little bit better than just a C, especially compared to some of the newer animes like beck... feels like art in those animes had no effort, or even one piece.

  5. Kabura Nov 03, 2005

    I think it's great!

  6. tsukasagr Nov 03, 2005

Excellent review. Although I really enjoyed the plot. But then again, I haven't read the entire manga yet.

Great review, I agree with most of your comments, though I also feel that the art wasn't that bad :D I haven't read the manga so I probably don't have the right to say this, but I thought it worked nicely with the overall style for the series.

Tsukihime for me is one of the best short-series...
The story for me is excellent... See ya!.

The series of Tsukihime is awesome! But the difference between the manga and anime is BIG. In the manga they gave more indept feelings of Shiki when he first find out he can see the lines. I think manga came out but you must buy it online.

Not necessarily. The most graphic part of the entire series is probably in the first episode, but even that is pretty low-key.

  13. yue_hikaru Nov 11, 2005

nope the graphic is only standart in Tsukihime. The story part is the great part on this series. And I like the OP music too.

i think tto the sound of this anime is just great

This is 1 of the best series I recommend

For the most part, the character designs are faithful to the original game and manga. Though it was short, I think the story is satisfying enough and the OST has great pieces with a nice use of the piano as well. That's what I feel, though. The purists may differ, but that doesn't substract merit for the anime.

If you want some more, I reccomend Fate/Stay Night.
