FLCL tv Review

Story & Characters

O.k. Let's begin at the very beginning. A wonderful place to start...usually. Welcome to Mabase. A boring average mundane place. Nothing special happens in Mabase. Kind of a saddening place. One day all the adults got excited though. A medical equipment manufacturer known as 'Medical Mechanica', or MM for short, came into town and built a HUGE factory that, oddly enough, is shaped like an iron. Like an iron for ironing clothing. That part, despite the fact that FLCL has more plothole than a slice of swiss cheese, is crucial to remember. Then we zoom in on our main characer, Naota. Naota is your average (ish) boy. He's 12-13 so you can imagine his life. Well whatever your thinking of might as well as be wrong. Naota is'nt very popular yet everyone knows him. Why? His brother was a big hit. He played baseball. Naota's brother was such a good baseball player he moved. He went to America for fame, fortune you know that story. So Naota is alone. He's not very athletic or smart. Not much talent. And some girl name Mamimi is always hanging out with him. She has some problems. She, sometimes, 'overflows' personally I think it's a stress-related problem. Mamimi is in high school so whatever you think is probably true with her. Then one day Naota's definition of 'reality' gets smacked upside the head, so to speak. A 'Vespa' (Yellow-Jacket) girl flies (literally) into Naota's life on a cool yellow motor-bike like a Yuusaku and smacks Naota in head with a blue Rickenbacker bass guitar (that's indestructable) then Naota's head becomes empty! No brain (literally!). And it also begins to open up to biblical proportions to let out large (and small *Canti*) robots. One robot named 'Canti' (He was named Canti by Mamimi. She named him after the God of Black Flame from a game where you have to purge a city of it's plain-ness by burning it *important*) that comes out of Naota's head is soon smacked by Haruko Haruhara (The Vespa Girl) and breaks *important!!* Then Naota gets the scratchiest explaination on what happened but in a manga format (that's Fooly and Cooly, Fooly+Cooly=Fooly Cooly). Episode 3 comes along and things are only getting stranger. A classmate of Naota's (the mayor's daughter) tries to get away and straighten some stuff out because her father recieved some unwanted attention (from Naota's father's magazine). In episode 4 Naota tries to play baseball for a team and strikes out. Haruko is the other teams pitcher and she has a wicked arm. Haruko, naturally, feels kinda bad so she coaches Naota on batting. During this time Naota kills (I think it was some weird copy of his father) father. Then the 'Eyebrow' man appears. He works for Medical Mechanica. He tries to make Naota back in to a simple person. Which we all know won't happen and it does'nt. Then a problem. A MM satelite is coming down. It's heading for Mabase. Haruko drives Naota to the top of the MM factory (which would be the point of impact) and then she hands him a bass guitar. And she gives him some prep talk like when she was coaching him in baseball. Then Naota hits the satelite with all his might and even Haruko helps him and they knocked it 'out of the park'. Episode 5 of Fooly Cooly. Naota is now well-known, cool, somewhat popular and all that good stuff. Then a lot of truth is revealed. The large Eyebrowed man talks to Naota a lot. He almost gets him to change but then...then the biggest threat appears. A large robot, bigger than the MM factory, starts destroying the town. Canti's true identity is revealed. Canti's name is Atomsk (Ah-tah-misk) he is known as the pirate king because he is able to steal entire galaxies and put them literally inside his head. Haruko loves Atomsk. Atomsk was once human but now is wroking with MM to get his body back. Then Mamimi gets mad at Naota because he loves Haruko and is moving around with her around town. She then finds a small thing called 'the core' which eats electronics. The core gets bigger after everytime it eats. The core is part of a device to destroy Mabase via giant iron-shaped factory (a.k.a. MM). Then it's battle/decision time. Naota needs to decide whether he wants to be normal (Eyebrows) or exotic (Haruko) He decides to listen to Haruko and be extroidinary. Then, something amazing. He becomes Atomsk. He fuses with Atomsk (he's done it before but Atomsk forced him to do it) this time Atomsk wants Naota to fuse, as in he does'nt have to it's his choice. He fuses. He turns red and then he's hold Atomsk's bass guitar and the one Haruko gave him. He then battles an enraged Haruko. She does'nt like Naota since he took Atomsk and fused with him. The battle ends as a draw and Naota becomes just himself again. The Eyebrow man dies and Haruko leaves Naota, on the search for the Pirate King. Mamimi becomes a photographer (because she got the whole story on a Kodak) and Naota is still Naota. He's plain. But when people see him they think 'His life is way to exciting!' Naota is still Naota but on a different level. A level where he is no longer plain.

Art

The art in Fooly Cooly, to me, was special in it's own way. Everyone who worked on the art in Fooly Cool truely has my admiration. It's so creative. A factory the shape of an iron. Bass guitars flying every which way. An alien, A man with HUGE eyebrows, giant robots! You name it! Even guns and a little *wink wink* sexual explicitcy *wink wink*. Each character was uniquely drawn. The heart and soul of all the artists went into this show and from all that love came the magnificence we know as 'The Otaku-Making' series we like to call FLCL (or Fooly Cooly/Furi Kuri). The action scenes and bass guitars an eyebrows have enough detail to blow your mind every which way with ease! That pretty much covers the art. I highly reccomend it!

Sound

I don't know about you guys but I love The Pillows (to an extent) they're my favorite J-pop band. I was introduced to them in Fooly Cooly. They (The Pillows) wrote the entire Fooly Cooly album. Their songs. When reviewed by the Fooly Cooly crew, was found to be perfect. No part of the music was edited and it was awesome. It was truely a perfect match. Strangest part is Fooly Cooly has no opening theme song. That's why the end song is good enough to cover opening and ending theme songs. All in all the FLCL soundtrack was really good.

Presentation

To be as frank as possible Fooly Cooly is as original as Bandai's presentation of .hack//sign. And we all know that story. Bandai takes a huge chance, spends millions and makes: an anime series, an OVA and OST for that anime and a manga and they made more than they spent in vrey little time. Fooly Cooly was presented....uniquely...it was all backwards at some point but in the end it all made sense. Every last part. There is no FLCL video game (I wish but even so what would it be about?). The humor in Fooly Cooly was really great. It is really great. Fooly Cooly is only 6 episodes but each one felt like it added a year of happiness to my life. It was so much fun to watch Naota grow up in this 'coming of age/you can't control me' story. It fit my personality perfectly. I feel that Fooly Cooly is one of the greatest anime series ever. This feeling is also felt by a lot of other people. Fooly Cooly is original, hip, cool, fooly, cooly, crazy, awesome and very attractive overall. Those are things that I like in an anime.

Well if you can try to pick it up at some point. It's a great show. It even has a manga. 2 volume manga series. This review took away 1 and 1/2 hours from my life. Well worth it too.

Great amount of details on the show. It was well outlined, seeing how each character acts in their own way and pointing out the twists and the plot to the story. In the end, though, it did all come together. As for me, I'll be confused as ever. XP

Woah, i think this review is good :D but the story part is too detailed, and can give out too many spoilers >_< so maybe you wanna tone down on that ;D still, good job ^_^

Good review. Furi Kuri(the japanese name for flcl) is really good. It'll just play around with your mind a bit. I watched it two or three times before I understood it all.

    Another great review.
Reading this gets me in the mood of watching this series.
I have seen pictures of the series and the art style is cool.
I also like The Pillows, but I did not learn of them by this show
in part because I have not seen the series, yet.
You like to give alot of details which I think can be good as well as bad.
    Still your good at reviews.

I have watched part of the show on Cartoon Network, where it airs late at night sometimes. I believe that the series is summed up by Haruko's words. "If you're gonna hit a home run, you have to swing the bat." She certianly tries to help Naota do just that. 0.o
