My-HiME

My-HiME tv Review

Mai Tokiha is just an ordinary high school student struggling to balance the trials of school with the tribulations of love. She is a recent transfer to Fuka Academy, a prestigious school where students have a significant deal of autonomy; apart from classes, taught by various lecturers, the students have a great deal of freedom, doing what they will under the aegis of the Student Council. However, strage occurrances recently have shown that things are not as they seem at Fuka. Why have creatures -- "Orphans" -- started appearing around the school, and what are HiMEs? What exactly is the secret of Fuka Academy?

Story & Characters

What would you risk for the one you love? There is a red star upon the moon that only the Hime can see and this is the story of the Himes and the ones they love...

Starting out, you are first introduced to Mai, who is a pretty energetic girl, responsible, but emotionally withdrawn from people. You subsequently find out who and what the Himes are. Up until the very end it's very much a mystery what this whole Hime business is.

I guess this can be classified as a typical beautiful girls/mecha type deal. I did enjoy it though the story wasn't all that great. There were specific parts of it that made brought it from a superficial anime to a more meaningful one. The question of the whole series I suppose is what can people do out of "love".

I thought the ending was kind of cheesy though.

The characters do change throughout the series as they are presented with different situations and are forced to make unpleasant decisions. I think it does a good job of showing the ugly side of human feelings. I tend to like anime that doesn't portray this happy happy image. I was very surprised towards the end where things just got bad and I think that more realistic portryal of people was what kept me watching.

Art

Art is pretty typical. Everybody is pretty, no ugly people in sight. In that way it's a pretty unrealistic portrayal of characters. I like it when there's a good mix of character types. I'm not really an expert on machines so I can't really comment on them. Gankutsuou was the most impressive one that looked like a more organic machine type. I didn't like the dog one because it reminded me too much of power rangers (i watched it when I was little!). The background scenery was pretty bland although I liked the garden scenery and the chapel scenery. The locations "filmed" were pretty limited. Almost nothing outside of the school grounds and if outside of school it's either the cafe where Mai works or the shrine, or some dark alleys.

Sound

This was what I loved about the seires. All the background soundtracks were wonderful. Again I have so many of these for when I have to study or sleep. Ensei no shizuka's my favorite soundtrack, it's absolutely beautiful. Kimi wa sora datta is the opening song and I really like this one too. The lyrics are also great so you should check out the translation. It's very catchy. It's a fairytale is also a good song if you ignore the awful English and just go with the general jist of the song. It's very appropriate for this series I think.

Presentation

Since I watched all of it, I would say it's worth watching. It's definitely not slow so if there are bad parts it goes by pretty fast. Since not a lot of questions are answered along the way you are left watching till the end to find out what's going on. A good combination of happy, sad, and bitter sweet moments. The story although not too special isn't so bland that it's not worth watching. At least they portray the characters pretty realistically even though they might not look so realistic. The background music also makes it very enjoyable. Humor is present in those anime typical laugh moments, but otherwise it's pretty sad all the way up till the end. The soundtrack though matches really well with the moments and I think the soundtrack is what evokes some of the emotional responses that the otherwise mediocre story fall short on.

People will enjoy watching this series because it's a nicely presented package. All of its aspects work together to bring this series into the good category. There are specifics that I don't like but that's just my particulars and maybe someone else who likes the parts that I don't like will think this series is a lot better than I have rated it.

This is an awesome anime. later on in the series it gets a bit tense and unlike other anime's that i have watched, some of the things are actually quite unpredictable. The ending was pretty crap though... still, worth a watch! the soundtrack is awesome!!!

I do agree that Music is superb... what I hate about this anime the most is the ending... (which is a bit of a letdown after the plot build-up to sorrow mode and all nicely), it is kinda boring at times too.... Well, I think this is a nice review.. but you may wanna put a little more introduction in the story so ppl would know what it is all about :D

I do have to agree with tareren, the ending was a let down. It was a pretty lame and abrupt ending. I did however, enjoy the character development and the twists in the plot which held your attention of wanting more.

ehh...I thought the story was really good up until the end. I wouldn't have given it a 10, but I'd have given the story a bit higher than a 6 for sure. The ending was definitely a let down though. I think most people agree with this (although I've seen people who said the ending was the best part of the anime...).
Music was really good, I love the songs in it.
The art is definitely worth a bit more than 5? There's a lot more anime out there with worser art than Mai Hime.....but personal preference I guess.

    hey...
is there anybody in the world who knows the lyrics for the track NÂș1 "Ensei"?

  8. Kamikakushi Jul 15, 2006

I'm also looking for it^^. The Lyrics must be interesting since it is an important theme song .
The Lyrics of "it's only a fairy tale" is pretty good too, although the accent of the singer is a bit "heavy" ^^
