Chobits tv Review

Story & Characters

Based off the shounen manga by Clamp, "Chobits" is set in the near future where persocoms (human-like computers) are common in the world. Cue in your average nice guy Motosuwa Hideki, 18 years old, a retester and a virgin at that~ He sets off to Tokyo to study at a prep school in order to get into college and on the way finds an abandoned persocom in the trash pile. Reasoning that he's reducing industrial waste, Hideki brings the the persocom back and switches her on.... At first it may seem like another boy meets mysterious girl kind of story, but Chobits goes much deeper that your average shounen story. The storyline explores some of the more mature aspects of an imminent future with machines replacing humans, of love, friendship, and what it really means to be "alive." Though even with it's mature themes, the overall look of Chobits is lighthearted at best. The comedy is very funny, though a bit ecchi at times it's done tastefully enough that anyone can enjoy it! All in all, Chobits plays out as a well written and thoroughly enjoyable love story ^^

Art

The art for Chobits is top notch. Animation is smooth and well drawn and the background is impressively detailed~ The character designs are probably my favorite for the genre, especially Chii and Yuzuki's art design (so lovable) The male character designs are realistically done, nothing flashy like green hair for 2 foot spikes on their head. The more down to earth styling makes it very appealing and easy on the eyes, a definitely plus after seeing so many outrageous character designs recently in some of the action oriented anime. Though there were few action scenes, the parts where there were nicely coordinated and animated without sacrificing quality.

Rating: 9

Sound

The music for Chobits was beautifully composed, a rarity these days in the harem genre. The slightly retro beats of the OP and other tracks worked great with the futuristic techno of the action sequences. Though the OST doesn't carry an impressive symphonic variation, it in itself works wonderfully with the theme and directive style of Chobits ^^~ The Seiyuu actors played very well in the roles they were handed, especially the voicing for Hideki and Chii. Though Rei Tanaka's voice could have used a bit more work, seeing as how she beautifully sung the ED song Ningyo Hime, I feel she could have done a better job in voicing Chii.

Presentation

Chobits is no doubt one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had watching anime. Each episode grows increasingly better (minus the recap episodes). The animation is well drawn and consistent through the entire series. It's lighthearted comedy will capture your smile, it's sadder moments will tug at your heart. The mature themes will draw you in a deeper philosophical question of life, though it's not overly apparent to the normal viewing audience, the message is there for a more mature viewer to ponder, Still, Chobits stays as a simple and sweet love story that anyone can enjoy, newbies and veterans. The characters are down to earth and well designed. Most you feel like you can actually relate to, and for a genre that is becoming increasingly less realistic and more fan service oriented, it's is indeed a good quality to have realistic characters ^^~

Lesse if Cloudy did a good job.
Hmmmm looks like you covered most aspects but you
could have given a background to the main characters such
as Chii. But of course, I like Chii the best so it's kinda biased ^_^'
Nice job with the review :)

in fact youre right, 8 is too much, i say 7/9/7/7 cause the manga drawings are to die for, but story-wise, i hate the ending.....so lovey duvey, wheres the science fiction!

err... welll... quite an enthousiastic review for Chobits. I wouldn't really advise the anime.... well I like the manga better but it still lacks of something. I think it's quite odd that Chii's "power" was different in the anime and manga.

  14. SoulLimit Oct 21, 2004

very nice review...my favoriate anime right now is Chobits...I loved Chi so much and i think everyone should watch this anime!

chobits, the anime that kept me up all through it until there wasn't more to see. I'm glad I saw one of the best anime in the world. the storyline is flawless to me. And Chii is the cuties character I've seen in a while. Hideki is one of the funniest male character I've watched. Just his whole way of acting around Chii and everyone else, really is entertaining stuff. Funny though how a character like Hideki seems to be wise when it comes to love when he has a lot trouble with relationships. He and Chii kind of remind me of me and my girlfriend, our realationship was a little weird because we barelly spoke the same language at first. But now even after understanding each other a little more we still come across some similar situations to Chobits. She's not normally an anime lover, but she loved chobits a lot.
anyway I really think others will enjoy this anime. I recommend watching it with your lover, because in the words of my girlfriend, "It's romantic, and having the one who loves you at your side while watching it, make it more romantic and funny." Bottom line 20/10.

I wanted to make a review of Chobits, for it's one of my favorites, but you allready said everything I wanted to put in it!
I completly agree with you, about the story, very enjoyable, funny and also sad, it's deep meaning too, and the drawing style more than everything else! About the sound I can't tell because I've only read the manga, but I'm going to see this anime, no matter what!
The only thing I regret: I'm not her someone just for her! T_T

  22. AWOL Jan 26, 2006

Quite detailed, but I feel that the use of the 'mystery girl' plot to be overrated, and hence should not be awarded with such a high score.

  23. sweetmaiden Feb 10, 2006

i love the way that hidaki is so shy its cute!

  24. dizzy1990 Mar 13, 2006
