Please Save My Earth tv Review

Alice Sakaguchi once dreamed that she is another person living on the moon. The dream is so strange and so real that Alice can't stop thinking about it. She finds out that some of her classmates are having the same kind of dream. They soon discover that they had been seeing flashes of their past lives as a team of scientists on the moon. Alice and her friends then decide to find the other members and piece together what took place back then. Complications arise when they realize that everything that happened in their previous existence continue to haunt and affect their present lives.

Story & Characters

This is where Please Save My Earth truly shines. As far as anime goes, it contains some very deep, complex, and thought-provoking themes; redemption, spirituality, reincarnation, love, responsibility, and on and on. It also includes action; ESP is a big part of the story and as the story progresses, so does the level of ESP confrontations.

It begins with main character Alice Sakaguchi, a high school student who recently moved to Tokyo from the more rural Hokkaido. She meets two fellow students, Jinpachi Ogura and Issei Nishikiuri, who end up confessing to her a very strange situation; that the two of them share the same dreams. These dreams are special; In them, Jinpachi and Issei are two entirely different people -- in fact, they seem to be from a different planet! They are two of seven scientists from a far away galaxy, living on a small base on the Earth's Moon, where they study the Earth with passion and longing. Alice is intrigued by these dreams ... but is shocked to the core when one night, she dreams of being one of the scientists herself! But it isn't until the tradegy with Alice's next-door-neighbor Rin that things really begin to spiral out of control.

The story continues with not only the pursuit of the other scientists and the truth about these dreams; there is tradegy, love, and so many other wonderfully written nuances to this complex story. The anime is well structured and edited, but you will undoubtly wish to find out more and more, and luckily the manga has so much more to offer!

This is one of the few "drama" animes that I can stand -- This isn't just a simple romance. I've shown it to almost all of my friends, and no matter what taste they had, they loved it. Even my boyfriend, who can't stand dramas, loved it! That's saying something ^-^

Art

The artwork for the anime is clean and well-done, and is a nice derivation of the manga artist's original work. But, as all drama-animes, scenes heavy on the action are where it lacks. The ESP battles, while beautiful looking, are sometimes awkward with movements. However, for the rest of the time, the realistic look is well-suited and creates the proper effect; that you can relate to these situations as being not only possible, but easy to see yourself in. Over all, it's easy on the eyes and the more you watch it, the more you can appreciate the style.

Sound

The sound is appropriate; Very beautiful background music for just the right ambiance, and the voice acting is quite nice. In fact, this is probably the only anime where I truly enjoy listening to the English Language track! And for me, that's saying something, because 99% of the time I cannot stand to listen to dubbed anime ^^; If you understand Japanese, you can tell on the dvd that a few phrases are changed. Again, this is usually somethign that bugs the heck out of me, but the changes in the PSME release were actually well-done and well-written, and one of the main reasons I prefer the english track for this is because at certain times, I felt the script was improved upon in the english version. Unheard of, I know, but it's true!

Presentation

This is certainly as original as it gets; I haven't run across anything else quite like it, and other animes with even remotely similar themes have just never been as well done as this! This isn't for everyone, of course; it's a fairly serious piece, and as more and more of the story is revealed, the sadder it gets. But, as far as serious animes i've seen, this is one that can appeal to the most people, since it has a little something for everyone, and I cannot express how impressed I was with the writing and complex themes, with the depth that too many other anime fail to reach.

Overall, this is one of my favorite animes of all time, and if you're remotely interested in an anime with some substance and heavier (though still dramatic) themes, I really think you'll come to love this anime.

For me, it only took one viewing ;)

For those who get as attached to this anime as I did, it might be worth it to seek out the Japanese DVD. It has slightly more footage at the ending, and some people I know were in tears just to see more of what happens (this was long before the manga was translated of course; now you can (and should!!) run and read the manga.
