Story & Characters
E's Otherwise takes place in the near future and the planet is being controlled by twelve corporations. The Ashrum Corporation has just recruited a teenager named Kai to join a team of powerful psychics called AESES. Think of the psychics (Also known as E's) as team of superhuman spys. They are there to bring justice and help those who need it. Kai is the new guy and has problems trying to fit in with the more experienced E's. After his first year his psychic abilities help him learn his potential. Being made by the same people of who brought you Full Metal Alchemist and Final Fantasy Unlimted you know there is bound to be some good plot twists(No, I won't tell you anything about that. Just watch it to find out) and magical action.
The downside is the first episode is a little paced compared to the other four episodes you get in volume one. Also the most of the characters follow the anime sterotypes(Shy girl, Clingy girl, Jerk/Rival boy, etc). But you learn to like some of the characters after a while.

The visuals are pretty good. I really like the E's magic attacks and the backgrounds. Some of the characters are well drawn while others are just average. Kai, Shen-lon, and Marla are drawn very good in my opinion. The sound effects are good too, especially the psi energy waves and magic attacks like Kai's force field bubble. The AESES outfits are cool looking if you ever seen Ky Kiske's outfit in Guilty Gear you will like their uniform. There is girl who dresses up in a pink outfit that looks that a Santa's little helper that is cute.

Like Full Metal Alchemist the theme song to E's Otherwise takes a second time to hear it to like it. The lyrics of the theme song match the point of the storyline. Just don't expect to start jamming out to E's Otherwise Theme like you would FMA. The end theme song is nice but left me wanting something more. You will notice that the next espisode music sound sort of like FMA so I can't complain about it. Songs in the show is not that catchy but good. Hopefully they will improve on that in later episodes.

Presentation
The story is pretty original. If you like any Final Fantasy game or a story based in the near future like Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex or even Gundam Seed's plot then you will like the story. It's more of an action anime with some small comedy. For example there is a scene where a character is listening to a lecture on an E's emergency survival when an E's takes too damage and loses ESP power and the guy jokes about hit points and magic points like in a Final Fantasy game. There are a couple of RPG references (Hopefully Square Enix will make this a game) like the city of Gald and the hit point reference I said earlier. There are also non RPG joke for example, this cocky guy in the beginning of the second episode who gets binged in the head from behind with garbage can lid. The story does have few plot twists for the Kai and his ill younger sister. Some of the parts where you think oh I think know what will happen may surprise you. The series is very enjoyable and I just bought the second volume of E's Otherwise so you know I like it.
