Angelic Layer

Angelic Layer tv Review

When Misaki Suzuhara was young, her mother left her with her grandparents, claiming she was leaving for business, but never returned. Now at 12 she goes to live with her aunt, knowing her mother lives in the same city. But after leaving the train station she see a big plasma TV showing two electronic dolls called angels fighting. Instantly falling in love with a white angel one. Then she meets a mysterious man called Icchan. He tells her all about these dolls and the game of Angelic Layer. She soon excels in the game and meeting new friends along the way.

Story & Characters

The face story is about a girl (Misakichi) who participates in a series of contests of angelic layer. Angelic Layer is basically a competition between two action figures (to be blunt about it) controlled via headsets worn by dueses (thats what theyre called). The underline story is about misaki, who is an underdog rookie of small proportions who proves that you can win if youve got heart. Quite inspirational, though its been done before. The story is nothing special, and the battles are fun to watch, but if youre looking for action and hardcore fights this is not your anime. Id rank the fighting to be better than shaman king, but less than lets say.. naruto or kenshin. This anime isnt so much about fighting, but misaki's relationship with newfound friends, a long lost mother, and self-discovery as she plays angelic layer and becomes more confident in her abilities. The story is quite easy to follow. I watched the anime before reading the manga, and I have to say that they are quite different. Basically, the love interest is different and the manga is much, much shorter. I cant say which is better, because I thought the manga's conciseness was refreshing, while it was still fun to watch the extra stuff in the anime. My opinion about the ending though, I felt that the ending to the manga was much better than the anime.

Art

The art was quite good, id rate the anime's to be better than the manga, but the manga was good too. The movements were fluid, although sometimes you see background characters to be still as stone. Also, the you know those battles scenes where they just recycle character movements for about 10 seconds and show it again later? Yea, they do that, otherwise the fight scenes would be flawless. But as I said, you dont watch it just for the fighting. The colors and the rare slapstick humor made this anime some easy watching.

Sound

I havent seen it dubbed, and never intend on doing so, but the voice acting was good as usual. All the voices seem to go well with the characters that they portray. It seems like nothing special, but theres nothing worse (in animes) than horrible voice acting, and it just kills everything. So good thing that didnt happen. The sound effects were of solid quality. The sound complements the art, in the sense that it adds to that fluttery feeling i was talking about. The OST was very good. I thought that the beginning and ending sequences were, dare i say, catchy.

Presentation

I usually dont like anime's/games where all the protagonists are young enough to be bed-wetters. It always strikes me as odd that these kindergarteners are eloquent super geniuses (apparently). Dont let that deter you from this anime however. The humor is exceptional, and well-timed. All the characters where lovable. Most of the comic relief comes from misaki's whacky mentor Icchan, whose intelligence is only surpassed by his silliness. The character that stands out for me though is Misaki, I have a thing for underdogs, especially cute underdogs. Seeing her struggle to triumph over adversity makes me happy. There is also good character development, especially in the anime (i think its because the manga is too short, though the last extra section is great). Like I said earlier, I usually dont like animes which main characters at that age (for several reasons), but I genuinely liked this anime, i thought the presentation was well organized and the transition from episode to episode was thoroughly enjoyable. It wasnt a whole lot original, but the whole concept did seem somewhat novel and I think all the other good stuff make up for that. I recommend this pleasant anime to those of you intersested.
