The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi tv Review

Haruhi Suzumiya is a beautiful first year high school student who is smart, athletic, and won't turn down any guy who asks her out. The problem is that she isn't interested in anyone or anything who isn't an alien, time traveler, slider, or ESPer - as such no guy has lasted for more than a week with her.

When she realizes that none of the clubs at school cater to her highly eccentric tastes, she drafts her classmate, Kyon (the narrator and voice of reason) and forms the "Suzumiya Haruhi's Save our World by Overloading it with Fun" Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short). Nobody quite knows what the club does other than to satisfy the whims of Haruhi, but it is becoming evident that there is more to Haruhi than it seems, and that there may be more truth to her delusional beliefs than reason would leave most to believe.

Story & Characters

Looking at this series at a glance from the first few episodes, one really gets the impression of a normal "Slice of Life" anime that happens to depict the day and the life of this girl, Haruhi Suzumiya. Well, it is anything but that. Nay say, the fact it concerns her in a school and chronicles the events around her for a few months. Okay, we love the all so normal approach and then suddenly destroying conventions and declaring that this girl is a god, for lack of better description. So for the Originality portion, I believe it fair to sat that it grants a 9 in this category.

I must say they did an excellent job of capturing the essential BORING aspect to school life, as we know it. This really makes Haurhi seem like the hero of the story, when if looked at rationally, she might be considered an antagonistic ally to the narrator. This approach was definitely well worth the risk in taking, but often would leave the "Novel" styling within the anime. Though they do compensate for this by creating a very boring and drool or even depressed souning narrator.
The characters are a great range of personalities, which really adds a realistic flare to the interactions and the overall feel of the anime. (Well, if gigantic glowing, blue monsters is your idea of reality, that is.) So for the characters, I have to say the did an excellent job in their conception, creation, and execution (production). So I really can only give them a 10 in this area.

Another thing to their credit, they could have drug this one on and on, but didn't! Kudos to them, for they understood they couldn't milk more than they did.

So, I have to say that they deserve a 10 in this category. (Explation: Average out the two scores. That comes to 9.5. Now apply my "Benefit of the Doubt" system, which dictates that I round up in the case of anything of a .5 decimal to a 0.99 decimal.)

Rating: 10

Art

Not the most beautiful anime on the face of the planet, but there have been many worse. Actually, its art was of god production quality and on the whole, there seem to be no defects in the animation to make it stick out. Though, I must say, for a 14 episode series, it seemed a little underdone in the art category. Perhaps they could have done a smidge better. So, in consideration of that belief of mine, I find that "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" gets an 8 for animation and art quality.

I am electing not to judge the character designs, as "Slice of Life" doesn't really need this portion.

So we leave it as a plain 8 for the Art section.

Rating: 8

Sound

This is a voice centric anime, that means they focused incredibly hard on the voicings. Which are done very well in my opinion. So, we have it be that the Voicing be at the level of a 9.

However, one fact that really stuck out at me, was the use of rather odd soundtracks for the environment. Provided the ones the got right, were...well right on the mark. They earn a 7 for this section.

I find it hard to believe that an opening is surpassed by the closing, as much as it was in the case of this show. But that said, they were good songs and good video accompaniment. Score of a modest 8, should suffice in this category.

The few insert songs they had...well, they were boring...Espeically for the environment of a school festival...So, unfortunately this anime scores a low 3 for said insert songs.

So, in total, we get a 6.75. Now, after Benefit of the Doubt, it becomes a 7.

Presentation

This anime...well, although in some parts funny, it couldn't keep the laugh coming. So, I have to say that although I could feel it trying to be funny, it did not perform. Unfortunately, this good show has to be given a 4 for its humor.

Although, on the the whole, it was enjoyable...the "Novel" feel really made it hard to watch. It's on thing to actually read a novel, but another to sit there and WATCH it. I have to say that I give it a 6 for enjoyability.

If you actually managed to make it through the first few episodes, you might have actually gotten to the concept, whih is rather bluntly stated by not one or two of the characters, but THREE of them! Talk about wanting to drive that one home! So for a clear concept, I will factor a small modifier to my final calculation.

Someone tell me why they constantly had the two Ep previews, in which one was right and the other wrong. That really got annoying and confusing. So, for that I will say for the transitions, it fell apart to a lower value of a 3.

Now the final verdict...*Que the FF7 victory music* We get a total of 4.33 then add a 10% modifier, we get a total of 4.76. That is enough for my Benefit od the Doubt. So we give it a 5 for presentation.

(Another Note: I actually liked this anime, so it's hard to legitimately review this.)

I liked it, not the best and I probably
wouldn't watch it again but it's a nice
turn on school life and what you think is real.
    Nice Review.

Well your score is pretty close to the one I gave it. I have to say you have one hell of an interesting review style. 10% modifier? Sweet Jesus is there some kind of review calculator that my computer is missing? Interesting indeed.

  3. TwilightObsessions Jul 05, 2007

    Totally biased review

  4. Ionae Jul 06, 2007

hm.. imho you could try to be a little more precise. Biased in what way? Scored to high? To low?
But you should keep in mind that a review always incorporates the opinion of writer... there is no 100% objective review... well at least in my opinion, feel free to disagree.

Now to the review itself: Well, overally I think it's good, thanks for your effort, Hasaki-Keissi. I think I would have given the story a lower score and the presentation a higher one...
That's just my opinion though, everyone has different preferences :)

Reviews are by definition biased. Don't worry about it.

I'd have to say that there wasn't a comment on the brilliant non-chronological order of the anime, though. It was one thing that really stood out in my mind. The double episode numbers is consistent. Haruhi always gives out the chronological number according to the chronological order of the episodes, while Kyon goes by the actual numbers in the season.

I like the way everyones are getting more and more strict anime critics here. You prove you know what you want.

As you said yourself, you merely read my mind.

As Kitten said, nice but it got it's own limitations (for not watching it again as well as I).

I think many liked it because of the innovative concepts introduced, but in an overall rating, the main plot does not qualify so high.

Still, Haruhi is one of my favorite anime girls (the best by chance).

    Good review!

    My Sister loves it.

I enjoyed it, I had a few good laughs, it was all good; it was pretty short though. My favorite episode was probably like many the concert. It was pretty well done. I wonder what they'll do for the second season, the way the first season ended I can't imagine.

One of the cutest part of it for me is the harehare yukai dance and my favorite character there is Asahina Mikuru. Well I should say that this is a show for someone who is bored or something huh!?

  10. SukiLovesAnime Dec 16, 2008

I love this anime so much
even the dance is so common to all anime fans XD
But yeah, its a good anime to watch if u're a fan of aliens, Time travelers, and Espadas(sp?)
It was fun while it still is
