X tv Review

Kamui Shirou has returned to Tokyo after 6 years, following the wish of his mother, and ultimately, his fate. It is 1999, and Kamui, gifted with psionic powers, has been foretold to either save the world, or to destroy it. The Seven Seals (Dragons of Heaven) wish to save humanity, while the Seven Angels (Dragons of Earth) wish to destroy humanity in order to save the physical Earth and cleanse it. Kamui must choose a side, but unbeknownst to him, his twin star awaits to serve whichever side will become his rival.

The world can only watch the destruction after the choice is made as time draws nearer to the Promised Day... and perhaps the Apocalypse.

Story & Characters

The first time I heard about X was when manga was published here in Poland. But as I weren't very ethusiastic about anime back then I hadn't put any effort to look for any of X books. It changed last year. I finally was able to found someone who was buying X from the very beginning and read the manga. Hopefully I also managed to get anime soon after and... as far as manga was enjoyable, TV series after 5 episodes started to be ... boring?

Unfortunatelly... Anime cooperates with manga till 6th ep. After that TV show becomes tremendously boring since every single episode reviews the past of both Dragon of Heaven and Dragon of Earth. I know it couldn't be avoided but the hell with the form... I hate watching all episode about single person...especially if it was about Yuzuriha dammit... nevermind. Plot developes slooooowly, there are toooonss of recaps and yes... the thing I hated the most in manga - feather is also availible here... Despite that plot starts to speed up in 14th-15th episode. First Angel dies then and soon after thet battles between Seals and Angels starts to be more and more overwhelming. While plot as an overal wasn't very good I somehow enjoyed episodes from 22-24. Especially final episode was very good yet the battle between Kamui's should've been longer...

Manga plot itself isn't so bad but CLAMP still publishes X so anime was just BASED od manga as well as final scene, so it may differ from manga (still I assume that X TV staff asked CLAMP for instructions about ending since it's done all in all in kinda "CLAMP style"). To sum up. Plot was good, although fillers made this series look boring in overal and destoyed it's all charm...

Art

X TV was released in 2001 so it's art form isn't so bad. All magic actions, battles, explosions look really good. Persona are also drawn in CLAMP style (long legs, smooth body with very triangle faces and huge eyes) which is the best for all C fans. The one thng that hit me the most was feather all around... I couldn't stand it after two episodes and during the series it's gotten even worser... At the beginnig I was really shocked seeing animation of battle between Sorata and the other guy (hell forgot the name, just two many of them) but soon after animation gotten worser... recaps started and as well authors reduced battle scenes... the wasn;t very great idea though.

Sound

THis is propably the best thing in X. Music in overall is just outstanding. I love listening to background sounds straight from X. Opening and ending songs are also very good and they're connecting to overall anime topic. Also explosions, overall sounds and seiyuu are more then just good. Kamui voice sounds really charming but Fuma's and Sorata's seiyuu are just world champioship... I'd love to have the soundtrack here in Poland on CDs but unfortunatelly it;s impossible...

Presentation

Getting closer to the end. X is kinda controversal anime. From the one hand it is based on manga, it shows interesting plot, has a lot of different charas, at the same time it proves to be boring, overrated with great, although wasted pottential. X could've been tremendous anime, yet it is just good, nothing more... Hopefully X the Movie is tremendous motion picture but it is the topic for different review. If anyone read X, then watching X TV won't do any harm to you. If one haven't read manga... after watching anime he won't either.... and one more thing, if you don;t like feather (sic!) and fillers as well stay as far away from this title as you can...

Sorry to sound stupid, but... what do you mean by "feather"? o_0

...this is probably a fair review. the manga is really better... I wish CLAMP would pick it up again. I want to know how it ends. >_<

well maybe my english is no good... but how do we call in english "things to cover brids bodies" or "parts of animal wing?"

    @Embershadow

I have seen the Anime series a couple of times, but I have never read the Manga. Qrdel is refferring to the many feathers floating across the screen in various scenes of the Anime.

The character's identies are well developed, and the animation and music is detailed as it is beautiful. It is drawn out longer than it should have been; I think Qredel's reveiw may have been a bit harsh, but hey, I haven't read any of the Manga to issue a fair comparison.

In conclusion, if you appreciate high quality artwork and well done sound, I highly recomend Clamp's X.

I like this CLAMP design, and X is probably the only anime with so thin character I like that much but this is only on an artistic way, because I think that the scenario, spite it is very good, is not really well build. It is easy to be lost (I was) in the manga, and the draw of mangaka is beautiful but there's so many details that sometime this is untidy. The anime version is much more clean, with good contrast, and a very good opening that make me rock my body :P

Nevertheless, any anime fan has to know X : read it & watch it !

I love CLAMP design for X. I always think that their drawing is the best in X. I've watched the anime and read the manga. Personally, the manga is better. Apart from the art (I dislike anime art), the anime storyline is a bit dissappointing. They left out so many important part. Well, I guess that's mean there's no 2nd season. Anyways, I just hope that CLAMP will continue the manga.

Yeah, there are definitely too much feathers in this manga... And guess what in the newest Newtype (CLAMP Newtype - special release) it would be a bonus - special volume with the last chapters of X! Yay, finally! Btw. Ja tez nie lubie Yuzurihy :P

can it be... that you're... from poland? Co? :P jak cos to na priva dawaj :)

Yeah, the feathers bothered me as well-not the sakura, which is as present as them, but, hey, Subaru and Seishiro are my fav characters...so it wasn't as annoying to me as those feathers...
Actually, feathers bothered me more in the manga than the anime, cause, even if manga art is more beautiful, it's less clear, and things floating in the air are more bothersome.

I didn't find character-episodes boring at all. If you don't like the character, then obviously you are not going to like the episode. But, as I love every single character form this series, it turned out to be great^^(I love episodes about characters such as Satsuki, who didn't get too much character development in the manga...).Yuzuriha's episode was a bit forced, in that she just told a complete strange(a very hot complete stranger, but a stranger nonetheless)if he could listen to her story(WFT?!).And her story comes across as very disney-like compared to other characters stories(specially since Subaru's chapter was the following or the previous...)
And I don't agree with you about the overall view-maybe the anime but definitely not the manga. It definitely was up to my standards, if not for the plot then for the characters.
And people who get confused should point to themselves as being the problem sometimes, not the series. There's a lot of people out there whose minds are not made for complicated stories-accept that, but don't criticise the series. I understand everything perfectly, and it pains me that people say the plot is confusing just because THEY can't undertand it >.<

Somewhat you're right about plot complaints while some people just don't get it. Though my ponit was to show that plot was not confusing but sometimes boring (and the reason for that were both fillers and slowly developing action by revieving unnecesary long chara's history). I really have nothing against clearing up personas past yet if it takes whole episode for a single chara it is just to much for me and for other people as well as it seems...

Yes the anime does get quite boring after few episodes and it seems to keep repeating the same scenes constantly

The manga is so sad that I don't really want to try the anime. I don't want to cry too much >_<

    This anime is great

  14. zero-rei1245 Jan 03, 2010

I liked the manga. The anime was cool, but...I don't know, but it seems CLAMP is cursed with "not-capable-of-being-completed" anime adaptations. Still, the art is superb and the soundtrack is far much better than the anime soundtracks of back then.
