RahXephon tv Review

Story & Characters

Another mecha anime? World similar to one presented in Eva? Yeah right, another crap like Aquarion or Fafner... These were my thoughts when I heard that something called Rahxephon actually existed in anime world... (somehow I noticed Rah about 6 months ago... by accident of course...) Friend of mine who has seen both Eva and Rah told me that it is worth watching (although he's not so interested in mecha genre) and after all I convinced myself to watch this 26 ep-length show and... I realized how foolish I actually was... But, to get it started.
One of the two best things in Rah is plot. In one way it is very similar to the one presented in Eva. Here we have lonely boy who suddenly discovered that someting around him is wriong. World outside Tokyo Jupiter that was supposed to be vanished really does exist... in addition people around Ayato have blue blood, veird mecha are flying all around the area and finally... The Room of Rah with misterious Mishima Reika female chara and giantic winged mecha - Xephon. At the very beginnig plot is hard to understand. Every explanation brings another bunch of questions. Viewer has no idea who actually is Quon, Reika, why people in TJ are tought to believe that world outside has vanished. However as far as plot moves forward everything is getting more clear although some questions still remains... Romance part of the plot is also made perfectly, yet sometimes I was really confused since main chara - Kamina Ayato has about five or six women around him... two last episodes also bring total confusion and left viewer with huge question marks instead of eyes... but this is what I love in anime the most. If I cannot understand some things than maybe another 26x25m will bring solution... in other words this is not an anime for just one watching... just like Eva

Art

Art is the second best thing in Rahxephon. It's been a long time since I've seen so perfectly done anime... Background are beautiful, mecha project as well. Animation is smooth and clean. Every episode represents great quality with no low downs. The One Thing I didnt like was the fact that when action shows someone face striaght nose kinda dissapears... of course it is the thing that can be easily avoided so... Explosions, all special affects, mecha battle, water reflections - here everything is just perfect. Especially animation of Xephon itself rulz everytime when I see it. That is why note should be 10.

Sound

Music and especially opening kicks ass. Sometimes it is hardly hear sound in background, sometimes ita accompany during battle. The best background music was I think when Ayato fought Dolem after returning from TJ (Dolem which later has been discovered as Asahina) and moment when he destroyed it at the same time killing Asahina... it was so moving... due to the music of course. I'd also love to hear Quon's playing. All other sounds like fighting effects are good and they don't diturn while watching show.

Presentation

As I said in the beginnig this show was supposed to surpass Evangelion. Fortunatelly it wasn't good enough to do so. Rahxephon is also not so popular today although it should, due to good plot and very good art. It's also one of those shows in which single watching is not enough to fully understand the topic and all other stuff. Rah teaches huge variety of things. It shows that love not always occurs between people in the same age. Also it proves how humane can be foolish when it comes to developing and moving to another stage of evolution (well just another connection to EVA...) Moreover I'm sure if EVA never happened to be released this show would be number one for me. It's really tremendous how people in Japan can spread so "already used" topic and bring the whole new breath to it. Rahxephon proved that really valuable anime can still be done even despite all other poor crap (Aquarion, Fafner ...). Xephon is great, honestly everyone who happens to be anime and mecha fan and seems to know anythng about EVA should watch this... real EVANGELION of the new century... :)

    Interesting review.

It's a pity this anime is always compared to Evangelion... well I never like the older one while I really appreciate this one. I especially love the episode with Ayato's female childhood friend.

I'm very dissapointed with this anime, it's more of the same: poor boy that suddenly discovers he's the chosen one to destroy / change / save the world, here some problems with girlfriends, there some problems with rivals..., and nobody can beat him at the great ending battle. In the final ep. everyone dies, and the few survivors are shown in their new happy world some minutes, where nothing is explained nor told. There is no need, the producers think we are so brilliant to catch it like they are to design an original story. :P
