Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club tv,manga Review

Haruhi Fujioka is a poor girl in a rich kids' school. She only got to go there because of a scholarship. She happens upon the Host Club when she is looking for a place to study quietly. After getting there, she breaks an $80,000 vase. After which, she is forced to work at the club to pay off the debt.
The only problem is that the members don't realize she's a girl....

Story & Playability

Haruhi Fujioka is a poor girl BUT was accepted by the Prestigious Ouran Gakuen, defined by one, prestigious family and two, family wealth, only because of a SCHOLARSHIP. Her life turns into a chaotic jumble of thrills and hoo-has when she stumbles onto the Ouran High Host Club! While trying to squirm her way out of the strange situation, she accidentally smashes a vase worth a whooping 8 million yen!! Impossible to pay isn't it? For a girl like Haruhi? Well, in order to pay off her debt, she has no choice but to work as one of THEM, yep, a host!! Having to put up with the quirks of the strange unique members (not to mention emotional, in a weird kind of way), how long will she be able to survive being with them before she goes berserk?! The only catch is, the members doesn't realise Haruhi's....a girl. [/b]

Let's welcome the members of the host club!!

The WILD one - Takahashi Mori is a 1.92cm high school senior who....doesnt talk much. Always seen with Senior Hani a.k.a Hani on his shoulders. Serves Honey irregardless and joined the club because of Honey. No one knows what he's thinking but he sure does have his way with Senior Honey...heehee.

The LOLI-SHOTA one - Mitsukuni Haninozuka is sooo cute, its a crime but do NOT let his looks fool you, he's actually 18!! Yep, a high school senior and one particular thing about him is that, flowers seem to pop up whenever he comes to the scene!

The COOL one - Ootori Kyoya is the "mother" of the club. (according to Tamaki, the LORD) One look at him and you will know he is in charge of the club, well, financially a.k.a the Vice-president. Can always be seen with a file? notebook? in his hands. A sheming fellow too but otherwise, the control system that held the reckless lot in their place.

The LITTLE DEVIL ONE one - The Hitachin Twins! Hikaru & Kaoru has a knack to show their brotherly love, well, could be more than that, in front of their customers! They love to put on pranks on people especially Tamaki and jokingly calls him "The Lord" when obviously they do not mean it!

The Twisted but Gentleman one - Tamaki Suou, a.k.a the "father" of the club and the President of it. Wants to be referred to as "King". He was the last one to notice Haruhi's a girl and when he finds it out, he somewhat "fell" in love with her. He's the most emo guy in the club and likes to sulk one corner waiting for someone to care for him!

Haruhi Fujioka - When it comes to being a host, she's a natural!! Tamaki needn't waste his time coaching her. She doesnt mind gender and finds it fun to host. The only one who can differentiate between Hikaru and Kaoru. *spoiler* She hates Lightning!!

I love all the characters! They are very unique and adds to the humour of the anime. My personal favourite is Mori cos he doesnt talk alot and is sooo cool!! Tamaki is lovable but can u imagine catching up with his pace? Phew....its gonna be hard!

Graphics

Anime - The animation studio, BONES, really did a good job with the graphics!! The colours are so vibrant and bright. I do not mind the "sharp" shoulders and long legs, small waist drawing because it is very pleasing to the eyes. The animation studio pay attention to every small detail of the drawing. Take a look at the buildings, the pond and not forgetting the beautiful sakura trees. You will see how flawless they are. One thing though, why did they choose pink for the main colour of the school building?

Manga - Bisco Hatori does a good job with the characters and drawings. One thing though, her works seem to be all over the place. Too many dialogue in one panel. It tends to confuse the readers and her inking especially for the dark-coloured hair characters like Haruhi looks messy. She tends to give it more shine than usual. But otherwise, her drawings are perfect. Love her fashion sense though she tends to dress Tamaki abit to his girly side....

Sound

What is an anime without a good opening & ending song? The opening to the anime, "Sakura Kiss" is upbeat and fast-paced which really suits the genre of the anime. The song is cute, reflecting on the humour of the anime and the characters. Furthermore, what makes it even more suitable is the meaning of the song. If you notice, there is a "hosuto" is the song (host). The song makes you want to watch the episode instantly but you don't have the heart to skip the opening cos its soo good!

The ending song, "Shissou" is sung by a guy!! I thought, "Hm....will he be like the singer "K" or T.M.Revolution?" But he isnt like that. The ending song is also upbeat. And oh yeah, i thought the ending song will be softer cos if you notice most animes with this genre tends to start off with a strong song but ends with a soft song. Know what i mean? Even though i dont really like the ending song (cos it's kind of noisy to hear) overall, its a pretty good song.

Seiyuus - The voice that attracts me the most is Senior Honey's voice who also does MOmiji from Fruits basket. Her voice is soo cute, almost child-like. Somehow, being 18 and with a voice like that, Honey wasnt mismatched! And can you believe the seiyuu is actually 18? Just like me? Ahaha. Kenichi Suzumura does a great job doing Hikaru Hitachin and suits his "devilish" character and so does the voice wo did Kaoru.

Tamaki's voice is soft and appealing which suits the kind of person he is; dramatic, loves to talk to himself, emotional and so on. Maaya Sakamoto's voice is soo cool here!! I couldnt sense her voice when she voiced "Lunamaria" from Destiny. Its like, her voice is soo deep, one could mistake her for a guy!

Fun

Overall, i really enjoyed this anime. It makes me go "Kyaaaa!!! Senior Honey is sooo cute" and makes me go, "Kyahahahhaha!!!!" whenever Tamaki makes his antiques. The first episode already caused me to crack up. There was a point where Tamaki hugs Haruhi and says, "Good, Good, Very Good". And then Haruhi will call Mori for help. At that point Tamaki was like, "Hanasanai yo, hanasanai, hanasana....hanasa..aaaah...." That is the point Mori caught Haruhi and pulled her from Tamaki's hug.

Both the manga and the anime is equally good in humour which is really rare. Some animes, the jokes in the manga is funnier than the anime but Ouran is not like that. I wouldn NEVER give this anime a MISS cos it is really good. I do read the manga and i will also recommend it to you. Ouran High Host Club is both Fun to Read & Fun to Watch!! So what do you say? Give Ouran a TRY!!!

Great review!...it's so enthusiastic and energetic that I can feel it :)
I've been thinking about starting the show and this makes me want to check it out even more

  2. Kidder Apr 25, 2006

haha... I like how you've included character types of the Host Club members as well. It's a fantastic show, with great humour and beautiful art. I think you should have waited for a while before reviewing it though. The show has only had at most 5 episodes aired in Japan, so your review is only based on maybe the 3 fansubbed episodes on the web.

    Anyways thanks for sharing

  3. harakiri Apr 25, 2006

Ouran is entertaining, that's right and the characters are funny but giving the story and characters section a rating of 9 is highly overdone. 9 would mean that it has a well written and complex plot and the characters are really deep and believable. That's not a fair rating in comparison with shows that are complex for real.

Secondly, it is a bit too early to rate this anime now. Only 3 of 12 episodes were released up to now so you cannot tell for sure if this show continues its quality or not.

  4. AngelKate Apr 25, 2006

Hehehehehe I love this anime so far! ^_^ A bit early to review it since only 3 eps are out, but nice job nonetheless. :)

  5. ayaki Apr 26, 2006

    I watched 3 episodes and it's hilarious!~
if u want a good laugh, this has to be it.
    tamaki-san!~ hahahahah he's the funniest.

  6. nandeyanen Apr 26, 2006

Well, it's been 3 episodes without any drop in art quality, which is a good sign... and if it's only 12 episodes, i doubt it'll drop at all...

I also think harakiri's rating system is a bit harsh - is it not a little unfair to not allow a light hearted show a high rating because it isn't "deep" enough? I think it should be reviewed contextually, like cagalli88 has tried to do here. When scoring a review, you should also be taking into consideration the market it's aimed at, and what they are trying to achieve... which i think they are fulfilling wonderfully - as opposed to purely judging the depth and quality of writing-plot-characters without regard to context. The best reviewers may personally dislike a film or show, but since it fufills the contextual criteria give it a good score!

Again, it's only 3 or so episodes in... but that shouldn't prevent a review of what's been on thus far :P

  7. cagalli88 Apr 26, 2006

It looks like i may be a bit rash to do this review but you guys have to bear in mind that i am reviewing the manga as well. Which shouldnt be a problem since i have read vol 1-4 of the manga which is still ongoing. Besides, arent reviews based on first impression?

    =D

PS: What? There's only 12 episodes?! Why?! Man, i bet the real ending of the story will be in the manga huh?

  8. a1221 Apr 26, 2006

i always thought review is after you watch everything, not the first impression.
immagine if someone watch 30 mins of a 2hrs movie and write a review for it.

  9. jackic23 Apr 26, 2006

    I thought I wouldn't like this anime at first, but even after the first it had a strange appeal to me and drew me in. I'm glad I gave this a try. For better or for worse ^^;;

  10. Susan-chan Apr 26, 2006

  12. Kahm-Jai Apr 27, 2006

I saw two or three episodes and allthough as a guy those twins scare me a bit. I find the anime haveing a good sense of humour and not very predictable (in the good way!). It's currently unknown how many episodes there are going to be according to a friend of mine. I hope the quality of this series keeps up with the demand :)

  13. decorluv3r Apr 27, 2006

I really love Host Club, I've read the manga and have seen screencaps of the anime. The art is very close to the manga which is great and it tends to stick to the story line. The opening and ending songs are lovely too. =3 Your review covers everything! =)

  14. kanE-chaN Apr 28, 2006

yah..ouran is nice..both anime and manga..i personali prefer the manga's plot and the anime's art..the manga's art isnt as gd..haha..anime's plot is almost the same..just that some part are missing and some parts are added into it..

  15. merelie Apr 29, 2006

omg this series is so much CRACK! :D And I mean that in the nicest possible way. LOL it's so much fun to watch and it's not afraid to poke fun at itself and I adore it. your review has so much enthusiasm in it. :)

  16. Countess-D May 29, 2006

Nice review! and very complete! ^__^

OHSC is actually the only anime (aside from Nana) I'm watching now and from the very first episode is a fav! I specially like how they make fun of stereotypes, "poor people AKA. commoners" and most of all, how Haruhi is probably the first shoujo heroine I don't despise! She's honest, cute in her own way and not an airhead....she's even inmune to her host co-workers!

There's only a thing I wonder...how long is this series gonna' be? I really enjoy it and it actually cheers me up when I'm mad or =_=, but I'm always concerned over companies which expand their golden eggs goose and makes crap out pf it =_=...I can't help it...I love this series so much I don't ever want to hate it!

  17. Pixxiegodest Jun 05, 2006

  23. blizzarche Dec 19, 2006

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA...the wild one is 1.93 cm tall...pretty damn short...is it really that good tho? when i watched it , i found it disturbin coz of how the character's were drawn so girly

  24. spiritsword Oct 25, 2008

Personally I prefer the art in the manga over the art in the anime. The art in the anime seems kind of out of place, like cut-out to me.

I enjoy reading your review, it's light hearted and really goes a lot into encouraging me to finish watching the anime. I got tired of the art half-way..
