Story & Characters
I don't really know how to get around to this without potentially ruining the events that unfold in the anime. So, for the record, there might be spoilers ahead.
Anyways, KGNE, is above all, a love story, so obviously you're going to be thrown in a love triangle or two somewhere along the line. Actually, since it is based on an H-game, only one is necassary, and that's all you're going to get. But hey, since this is trying to be "realistic" as possible, that's acceptable, right?
The story unfolds with the characters in high school. Haruka has a crush on a friend and main character, Takayuki Narumi. After...well, who cares how long, because it was obviously pretty long, time of waiting, she finally racks up the courage to confess her feelings to him. Of course, there's a friend involved, and that's where Mitsuki is thrown in. Unlike Haruka, who is reserved, shy and quiet, Mitsuki is outspoken, outgoing and pretty violent -- she often abuses Takayuki. And like any good love triangle, she, too, is in love with Takayuki. Ironically, it was her befriending Takayuki on behalf of Haruka that allowed Haruka the courage to confess to Takayuki. But, if you really look at her, she's quite a good best friend... Despite having obvious feelings for Takayuki, she thinks more of her best friend, and just lets them go, unrequited. Those are your three main characters, and pretty much the basis of the show. There's another guy friend in there, but his role is very inconsequential, so he's not even worth mentioning.
Where were we... Oh, right. She just confessed his feelings for him. Takayuki, being the typical main character, never even realized it and just accepts her to be his girlfriend nonchalantly. A couple of days pass by, and despite their girlfriend/boyfriend status, they never really seem all that affectionate towards each other. Haruka begins to feel that Takayuki doesn't really love her and decides to break up with her. Now, Takayuki, feeling guilty decides to... hn... observe her for a day, and then SUDDENLY falls in love with her again. And with that, he returns to the spot she confessed to her, and confesses to her instead. Wow, that's pretty romantic, huh?
So, one day, they're supposed to be meeting at a train station to go on a date. Haruka gets there pretty early, and waits for him to show up. Taka, while running to the station runs into Mitsuki, the world being a small place and all. She tells him that it's her birthday, and for reasons unknown, he spends time to take her shopping, WHILE Haruka is still waiting for him. Well, the plot takes a sudden twist when a Haruka gets into an accident, causing her to end up in a coma.
All of that in just 2 episodes! Wow, that's pretty riveting. But that's also when the story falls apart miserably. Fast forward three years, with Haruka still comatose, and Mitsuki conveniently Taka's girlfriend now. I guess I'll just leave it here, since revealing anymore would defeat the purpose of watching the series, period.
Just know that I'm giving KGNE a 4 because it actually had a pretty interesting premise, albeit TOTALLY screwing up and dropping the ball.

Art
The artwork wasn't bad. Nothing spectacular, or even remotely good for that matter, but still it was easy on the eyes to watch, and I really liked the direction the artist went by keeping the bright colors and pretty style, instead of using more serious and realistic drawings. But then again, it WAS based on a hentai game, so ugly artwork would be unforgivable. I mean, the entire purpose of those kind of games is that the girls are very pretty, right? It was a pretty good push for the characters to be as wholesome as they were, but still try to be "realistic" as possible. But, on the other hand, that could also be a reason why I didn't take this anime very seriously.
The actual character designs were pretty bread and butter. The main character, Takayuki couldn't be more bland and lacking in any particularly noticable trait. His hair is normal, his face is the usual stoic expression. He's skinny with no really outstanding feature. Haruka is pretty plain too. Mitsuki is freaking ridiculous in the beginning parts of the anime, because her hair looked like it weighed more than her body. The diner girls are nothing special, albeit bouncy. All of the characters that are minor aren't even worth mentioning.
About the only girl I thought was unique was Akane. And, she alone, is the reason why it's past the halfway mark on my characater rating.

Sound
Pretty good. I know this anime is supposed to be a very serious story, so the seiyuu (voice actors / actresses) did a good job in acting out their respective roles. Every character except Takayuki that is. I'm sorry, but the person who did his voice just didn't make me feel at all. He's either that incompetant a seiyuu or the character is just that boring. Either way, he seriously takes away from the great efforts put forth by the other seiyuu.
The background music is also acceptable. During the times something serious or tragic happens, it just happens to play the right song, making it at least feel like a good drama.
A good effort, but nothing too great or memorable.
But still the best thing about this anime.

Presentation
This is the part where the anime completely and MISERABLY falls apart into the lackluster, overrated, and under-achieving piece of crap that I feel KGNE to be.
The characters are what really brings this anime down.
Takayuki - Can a character be more generic and boring than him? After watching KGNE, I doubt it. He has no personality, and he literally does... nothing. When something happens, you'd expect him to react in a certain way... but he doesn't. Yet at the same time, he's feeling all this guilt and taking in all of the blame. Now, I have to wonder... Why? Because of the circumstances that led to the accident? Because he "abandoned" his girlfriend? Because he's visiting Haruka after she wakes up from being comatose?
Mitsuki - I have never cared less for a characters spiraling into self-loathing, angst and depression as I did, when I watched this pathetic character in action. The way she acts, the justification to why she does it so ridiculously pretentious and convenient that I can't help but feel pity (and not in the way the writers wanted us to feel) for her. Nothing she does is remotely emotion invoking. I might have felt something when she was in highschool, when she actually had the fighting chance to get with him, but once the accident happens, it just becomes a BAD soap opera. Haruka gets into an accident, and while Takayuki mourns for her, she conveniently takes it upon herself to cheer him up, and ultimately catch him on the rebound. This would have worked in a good soap, but KGNE isn't one, so it failed. I didn't feel any sense of emotion when they got together. If anything, it just felt like it was them jumping from A to B. Everything she does, I didn't feel for. It was like she tried so hard, that it had the opposite effect. Mitsuki, IMO, was an underdeveloped character with readers giving her unnecassary amounts of sympathy.
There are other characters, but as mentioned.. These two are the two main characters, and a pretentious means to the end.
This anime failed on so many levels. As a drama, it failed, because I didn't feel for any of the characters. And because of that moron, Takayuki. It's comedic efforts were completely useless and did little to really make me laugh. Actually, it just made me hate the series more. The level of emotion is also overdone for a bunch of underdeveloped characters.
I wouldn't watch this anime if people payed me to. It's seriously that bad to me.

Geeeez, it's such a scum?
I "confess" you I had planned to get the anime and game (since I'm in love with Haruka's design and I'm a frantic japanese H games collector), but, What the hell?
Well, nobody's perfect, and I, well, since I don't like animes that much, you gave it a major ranking than I would thought for it.
0 (-f).
Finally ^o^! There were so many reviews on this anime, that described it as good or very good.
"...).
When I watched it.. I felt almost asleep... so boring -__-" nothing spectular nor I felt with the characters. As you said, the music + sound was good (and Akane was truly the best character and I think she was also the only one with brain
You have very good points in your review and it all fits together. I totally agree with you.
i dunno, i liked it. i agree though, akane was really the only decent character, besides haruka. takayuki is a complete moron
Honestly, this was the only "relationship"-based anime I have enjoyed. Coming almost dirrectly from an H-game, several friends and I would have fun trying to pinpoint when exactly the H-game parts would take over that the series didn't cover ^^.
My personal rating for Kimi ga: 7/10
thank YOU KY! i loathe this anime, i couldn't figure how come people rated it as good :/ seems like the author didn't know how to end it and just dropped it just like that. takayuki is a %$#@#$%^&*( alright, no personality, no backbone, nothing! yes, i agree with all of you Akane is the only one with brains, hn.
the guy who made this review sucks ^_^
Hmm... I was wondering if anyone finds this anime as uninteresting as I did. Haha, I have to agree with you with many of the points you made. Takayuki is a character that has so much potential but seriously under-developed. That itself is the biggest mistake throughout. Yes, the story & plot are very real indeed, the characters as well, except Takayuki. I bet even the ordinary of the most ordinary guy you can find on the street would have done better than what Takayuki did.
i didnt like this anime much either. i liked it up until mitsuki and takayuki started going out. from then on i hated this anime because it was so stupid i mean mistuki was supposedly harukas friend and she "dies" and there she goes after harukas boyfriend i absolutely hated this anime because i personally think that no friend would ever do that. i hated mitsuki from the beggining she was so annoying and then she had to go do something stupid like take her friend boy friend. when this anime finished i told my cousin how much i hated it and he was like you just dont get it why takayuki and mitsuki stayed together. he was referring to how much they loved each other.
I actually have to agree with you on this one, Ky. Despite the fact that you gave it half the rating that I felt it deserved, you pointed out all the valid bad points of the show, which makes it a realistic review.
One question: Is there ANY anime that you like?
*loves this review*
After watching those two first episodes, I had to suck down poison and give it another shot. It failed (again). Stories like this set in the 'real world' should at least try to seem realistic. And with more lifelike characters.
I like this anime but....better not watch it, or you will cry a lot, like me ! I love Haruka, so, very very sad ending....T_T
