Story & Playability

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

The plot is quite simple, yet organized and portrayed incredibly. Unlike most games, Nocturne offers a unique status customization which allows you to make your main character to have the status which suits your battling style and learn skills you wish. Another key point is the fast battle system. Although turned based, Nocturne definitely forces you to be alert to the battle at all time.

For RPG gamers who seek challenge, Nocturne's dungeons and puzzles will give you more than enough to satisfy you. Finally, Nocturne contains 6 different endings which you will have a choice on which path you wish to follow.

However, a possible downfall of the game is if you are not tolerable of its dark theme. Similar to games such as Persona and Devil May Cry, Nocturne has a dark atmosphere throughout the whole game - possibly the darkest in all of history of games.

Another possible downside is the games ties with many religions. For example, many of the demons are from various folklores, myths, deities and creatures. I understand that some people may get offended by whether the demons are portrayed and this is why it is a possible downside. The game also features an apocalypse-like theme where various demons and events from the Book of Revelations are present such as the Four Hoursemen of the Apocalypse and the Earth's death. Hell is also featured in the game where it is called the Labyrinth of Amala seperated by floors called Kalpas.

Overall however, a masterpiece worth far more than words may explain and a game that speaks for itself.

Graphics

Possibly Nocturne's greatest downfall is within the game's graphics. Compared to the graphics of more modern games such as the Final Fantasy series, Nocturne does not stand a chance. However, you must consider that the grapics style used in Nocturne - despite the technology available - was on purpose. Th graphics of the characters - like the game - have a dark atmosphere surrounding them or somewhat dark.

The Maniax version of Nocturne offers more than its counterparts. Unlike the other versions, Nocturne provides 2 different ending with a secret boss along with new fusion demons in the Cathedral of Shadows. Another benefit is the option of obtaining a very familiar secret character in the game. If you have played or heard of the game called Devil May Cry, then you must be familiar with the character Dante and his superior and stylish moves. Dante becomes a powerful boss in Nocturne and possibly an even more powerful ally towards the end of the game.

Sound

Nocturne has a combination of rock, techno, electrical and soft relaxing instrumental songs.
Although no dialogue in audio will ever be heard other than those during the fight, the music is a combination hardly found in games now. Each theme suits the situation and add a "blood-pumping" beat that will get you pumped during any kind of battle. Battle themes are especially great and personally, the ending theme which is a combination of soft relax sounds of a piano which then is added with what seems to be rock. Even though you may hate rock music, I believe that the battle themes will - in a sense - help you through your battles in a more enjoyable way. Simply incredible.

thank you for the review..I is great to find other Nocturne fans
Nocturne is one of my fav games of all time..I love the story and freedom in the game, and I think the graphics are fantastic for the cell shading. The only problem I had was there was to voice acting..I am currently playing it again to get a different ending.

What ending did you get?

Hmm. Yes. I too feel the same way.
Really now? I am also playing the game again for a different ending. For my first play through I got the True Demon Ending and almost gotten 100% on the Demonic Compendium. Sadly, I accidently erased the file, but, as I have said before, I am currently playing again. I am aiming for either a neutral ending or "angel".

What about you?

ouch..I've done things like that too..I did complete the Compendium at a 100%, the only thing I could not get through was the burial chamber..My first time through I got the true demon ending and the neutral ending ( I saved on two different files at the Diet building). Now I'm trying either for the demon ending or Noahs ending, but I don't know which one I going to get.

Ah. I have already seen every ending by going on youtube but I only have gotten the true demon ending. How do you recieve the Neutral ending? Also, have you opened the special doors that requests something in the Fifth Kalpa?
Try for the demon ending...I highly doubt it is that much different from the True Demon Ending though... Probably you are second in command next to Lucifer.

It was kind of luck on getting the neutral ending..I choose good answers..like saying my heart was still human, and not siding with anyone. Yeah I did..I think the pixie one is the best only b/c I think what she say is funny, and she becomes a powerful character. Here is a rundown of the doors..Light=Metatron, chaos=Beelzebub, and dark heart=Black Frost(you can find him in the 3rd kalpa, where the first switches where Dante chases you. (but you probably already knew that)..if you side with Noah or Baal, do you get to see there worlds?

Oh... then Hijiri question in the Terminal is important... Yes.. I did know that..but thanks for the reminder.. You do not see the world..the Yosuga, Masubi, and Shijima endings are basically you and the new god talking in a desert..

well thats disappointing..Yeah just don't agree with anyone. say you are human, say you are going to stop Isamu from killing hijiri..say you are going to stop Chiaki from killing Futomimi, and I don't know if there is one for Hikawa, I just constanly disagreed with him

Yes.. it is.. that is why I wish to see the human ending for myself...despite my opinions... I see.. thank you for your support ..
