Plot Synopsis
This series, by the producers of Samurai Champloo, is set in a futuristic utopian (read: dystopian) city, Romudo, where humans and robots (called autolaves) coexist and where peace and harmony are ensured through a system of central management that essentially discards emotion from society. However, a homicide shatters the regulated peace of the society, and Lil Meyer, a young and ambitious investigator from the Citizen Information Board, is assigned to unravel the mystery behind the murder, and as she uncovers more and more information, she stumbles upon a secret that threatens to change Romudo forever.

Story & Characters
The storyline of Ergo Proxy is pretty complex, and filled with mysteries that
hook you and make you feel like watching it to the end so that all questions can
be answered.
Somehow I found that there is a parallel between the setting of Ergo Proxy and
the Matrix. Both evolves around a world that seems to be a utopia but actually
is controlled by something else. Both questions their worlds and talks about the
existence of an \"outside\" world. Just like the Matrix, Ergo Proxy
explores a lot on existence, and the meaning of it, and that set people thinking
as well.
The characters of Ergo Proxy are very realistic. Each of the characters are very
unique individuals, they have their own strengths and weaknesses, and what each
of them are thinking is not easy to understand, and even if you understand, you
won't be able to understand fully just like the real world. This makes the story
even more engrossing as you will then try hard to figure out the characters.
Overall, the story of Ergo Proxy is interesting, characters are 3-dimentional,
and certainly will grip you to the end.

Art
Even though the series do not have many bright colours (most of the time it will
be grey), the graphics are beautifully drawn and presented. Of course,
considering that this series is filled with mysteries, I would think that the
choice of colours are rather good, as it suits the overall atmosphere of the
series.
The way the characters are designed are compelling as well. Lil is certainly a
very attractive woman
(I love
her eyeshadow! what brand did she use??
). The
autoraves are depicted in a manner that I have never seen before (I mean, they
look different from other AI in other series or movies, correct me if I am
wrong). Vincent Law's confused face certainly suits his mystified past. Pino\'s
rabbit suite is sooooo cute!!!
One thing I like most is the depiction of Romudo. This city looks totally
awesome, and is really a utopia kind of state. Of course, the contrast between
Romudo and the "Outside" world is huge as well, and the manner both
places are portrayed matches the storyline.
Overall, the art of Ergo Proxy is great, and the designs of characters are
totally memorable.

Sound
The opening and ending songs of Ergo Proxy suits the series a lot, especially
the lyrics. The lyrics are mostly depicting a troubled mind, with words like
"come and saaaave meeee". This exactly describes Vincent Law, and his
state of mind.
Voices of characters are good as well, as the tone used are mostly what we use
in daily life (a bit darker, though) and it makes the series even more
realistic.
Ergo Proxy does not have much background music, mostly it's just wind howling
away or machine making noise when the characters are talking. However, the
natural background noise makes the series seem more eerie and mystified, and is
certainly better than unnecessary background music.
Overall, the sound suits the genre of Ergo Proxy.

Presentation
This series is not for audience who just like to laugh and watch funny things.
It is more suitable for audience who would like to think about mystries, ponder
about questions, and raise more questions. There are a lot of issues that the
series talked about (perhaps not all are in detail), for example like meaning of
existence, and what the creation of AI mean to human( and a lot more). Some of
the issues are global issues as well (the future of mankind, advance of
technology, and etc), so they are worth to think about.
Set in such a dark context , Ergo Proxy is not for audience who are too young,
or preferred a light-hearted series.
Overall, if you like mystries, then come and join Lil in her expedition to truth

My first review
criticisms are welcomed!
Not a bad review...might have been a bit more detailed with the plot and characters though to give people who haven't seen it more of an idea of what it's about
I'm a fan of the series myself
Well if one were to go into a discussion of why it is called 'Ergo Proxy' it might be a spoiler to those who havnt seen many of the episodes.
But as it introduces in the very beginning, there is a creature known as a Proxy, which the actual literal term for proxy show meaning in the story. There are also different references to art and other parts of world culture and history. Different small things aswell; take Lil's ID code for example, say it outloud and you will see what I mean.
i love Ergo Proxy~! I'm glad someone made a review of this...! i hope to see more animations in this calibre!
Pino
Pino Pino Pino Pino thanks for mentioning her cuteness... and Lil too... they
have the most memorable cast imo..
well, i really do want to give more details but..i wasnt too sure of what this anime really meant myself
maybe
when i see more of it i could understand better
*waiting for newest episodes of Ergo Proxy*
but anyway, glad to see so many fans of this series =D
ive seen the first episode of it and it is very interesting and its pretty dark always
and the eyeshadow is very nice form her (i forgotten her name )
Her name is actually under debate by those of us following the show :P
In the first few eps of the fansubs, she's called Lil (assumingly based on how her name sounded). However, in a later episode we see her name on a computer screen, which can either be spelled or Rel or Real (depending on whether you include the faded "A" on the screen).
Anyways I really like this series. I find it extremely intriguging and follow it almost religiously. It's hard to describe the story without giving away too many spoilers because most of the plot and character backgrounds are a complete mystery to us (the audience). It is safe to say that sci-fi and mystery fans will probably enjoy this. Also people who enjoy thought provoking anime shows would definately enjoy this.
I personally would have given it a higher score for art and sound, since I think the animation is significantly impressive compared to many other anime TV shows and is almost of OVA quality. The show can be a little confusing at times because the preceding episode doesn't usually start where the last episode ended leaving time gaps, but a little concentration and observation usually helps you keep up. This is NOT confusing in the same way that Neon Genesis: Evangelion is confusing
ergooooo proxy its AWESOME! everything in this serie is so impressive l! and the plot and everything omg issss justt tooooo muchhhhhhhhhh
