Story & Characters
Imagine an anime about the supernatural and the modern cyber world. (Serial
Experiments Lain.) Think of another anime about hunting witches that blends the
stories of the past and the technology of the present. (Witch Hunter Robin.) Now
imagine an anime about young children with magical wands fighting monsters and
protecting people. (Basically any magical girl anime.
) Put
these all together with a little Norse mythology and what you get is Mythical
Detective Loki Ragnarok. Despite this odd combination Mythical Detective Loki
Ragnarok flawlessly blends dark undertones with funny moments, something that is
rarely done well in anime. Most anime is either one or the other. If an anime
does try to blend darkness and light humor it is usually cheesy switching too
quickly from the dark moments and the jokes. Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok
manages the combination and the result is stunning.
Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok is about the Norse god of evil and trickery,
Loki, who has been thrown out of the world of the gods by the head god Odin for
unknown reasons. Even more annoying to Loki is the fact that he has been sealed
in a childââ¬â¢s body. Throughout the course
of the anime Loki is trying to get back into the land of the gods by collecting
evil spirits. The anime runs deep than that, however, as Loki is trying to
figure out why he was forced out of the world of the gods in the first place. A
greater battle between Loki and Odin soon becomes evident, as does the approach
of Ragnarok, Norse mythologyââ¬â¢s answer to
the apocalypse.
All but one of the major characters are from Norse mythology and yet they have
a human feel to them and arenââ¬â¢t hard to
connect to. For example there is Heimdall, the main villain. Heimdall has long
purple hair covering half his face because his right eye is missing. He makes it
clear that he believes Loki took it though Loki says he
doesnââ¬â¢t have it. Heimdall refuses to
listen to him and instead spends the course of the anime plotting revenge.
Another extremely interesting character is Freya, the Norse goddess of love and
beauty, who falls in love with Loki. She begs Odin to let Loki come back to the
world of gods and as a punishment she is sent to earth as well and trapped in
the body of a young girl named Reiya. While she is in the form of Reiya she
looses all her memories as a goddess. When Freya first meets up again with Loki
in the anime she holds extreme resentment for this and almost kills him. (This
resentment is made worse by the fact Heimdall gave her an evil necklace.) When
she realizes what she is doing she goes back to loving Loki with all her heart
which makes for one of the more interesting relationships in the anime. Loki is
often fending off her all too eager advances but there are also signs that he
likes her. This is especially evident in a scene where Loki reverts to his adult
form. Freya comments on how handsome he looks but soon changes back into Reiya.
After she changes Loki smiles and says,
ââ¬ÅIââ¬â¢m
glad you feel that way Freya.ââ¬Â

Art
The art is very pretty but it would defintly not win an award for being exceptional. What I like about the art is the fact that it matches the anime perfectly. It's not too simple or 'cute' for the serious moments of the series but it is also not too serious for the funny scenes. It was a little annoying how the eye style seemed so diffrent character to character though. Also some shots were rather poorly done though the overall presentation was wonderful. The anime also used nice visual effects such as static over the screen whenever Loki felt an evil presence.

Sound
While the character interactions and constant references to mythology are all
that is need to keep me coming back to watch this supernatural detective there
are many other perks. For example, the music is amazing. It blends everything
from soft and mysterious music to a bit of metal during battle scenes. Whatever
the music you can be assured it matches perfectly.
One thing that makes this anime so amazing is how well the voices are done.
Yuriko Fuchizaki who did the voice of Loki was able to give Loki the voice of a
child without losing his calm and proper personality. Another especially notable
voice actress was Romi Paku who played Heimdall, the main villain. She was able
to catch perfectly his dark cold exterior.
Very few of the voices were poorly done and the only one that really annoyed me
was Reiya who was a bit overly cute. It seemed like they were trying too hard to
make her that way. Also she was extremely polite, saying things such as,
"Hai desu." There is also a character later in the series who uses a
bell. It can get quite annoying when you hear it ringing about every 5 seconds.

Presentation
I am enjoying this anime thoroughly. All together the mix of funny moments and dark scenes is very well done and the underlying dark tones keep me coming back for more. The characters are entertaining and the interactions are well done and believable. All together I have to say Mythical Detective Loki is a rounded anime that blends elements of story, humor, soundtrack, and visuals. It is defiantly something worth checking out.

Good review, Kyonkichi... very detailed and honest, and I have to agree with it even though I haven't seen enough Loki to know all of what you're talking about. Good job. I've never even done a review... lol. Maybe someday.
