Plot Synopsis

When Hibiki Tokai accepts a dare to steal the vanguard mecha he helped produce, he becomes involved in a story much greater than the conflict of men versus women in the Mejere system. Interacting with the strange reactor/energy unit called the Pexis, he and three Mejere pilots of the starship Nirvana become the only warning of the impending attack of a race of machines on their home solar system.

Story & Characters

Vandread is Yet Another Space Harem show, but with some goofy twists.

The setup: humanity has left the Earth behind and gone to the stars. One colonisation ship with most of the crew in hibernation found two more or less inhabitable planets, called Tarak and Mejale. For some obscure and never explained reason, the caretaker crew buried the hibernating colonists on Tarak (in functioning hibernation capsules -- they can be revived) and divided the planets up between them. The guys got Tarak, the ladies went to Mejale. I really wish we would have been given the reason for that particular brainstorm, but the show simply treats it as a given.

Decades later the two planets are thriving with males and females, both genders now reproducing by genetic manipulation (and in case of the males artifial wombs, one supposes), and having forbidden all knowledge that at one time, males and females lived together.
Relations are strained, with both sides building armies and navies to fight the other. Propaganda is typical of war times; males for example are lead to believe the female fiends will eat them.

Here begins the series. The males have refitted the original colony ship, complete with a Mysterious Power Source called Paksis, as the flagship of their navy. A factory worker called Hibiki Tokai sneaks aboard on a dare. During the comissioning ceremonies, female pirates attack and capture the ship (with Hibiki assaulted by an ufo-crazy female ditz named Dita), causing the male crew to abandon ship before the own forces blow it up.

The males Hibiki, doctor Duero and rich kid Bart are for various reasons still on board, interacting with the female pirates when the Tarak men launch their missiles, reasoning that if they can not have the ship, nobody will. Just before they impact the Paksis glows, and the ship finds itself thrown halfway across the galaxy in seconds.

Now they must get home again. There are however problems. There is an enemy in space, attacking the human planets, and the crew is a target as well. The ship and its mecha have been overhauled and changed by the Paksis, and effective defences require one male mecha piloted by Hibiki and a female fighter (usually piloted by Dita) to willingly cooperate and merge like the Transformers of old. The ship herself can only be moved if Bart is at the controls, but the girls control all other systems like life support and the fighter bays. To survive, the males and females will have to work together and start to trust one another ...

Art

The art and the character designs are beautiful, only getting better as the series progresses. Colors are vibrant, and all characters have their own quirks and personality oddities. Most of the girls are drawn and clothed fan-servicy, but there is no actual nudity in this series.

CGI is used plentiful but also extremely well integrated, so that it is often difficult to tell what was hand drawn and what was CGI. The climactic battle at the end of the second season is especially good, with hundreds of seperate mecha and fighters all slugging it out while dozens of larger ships hang back and fire their cannons, without the viewer getting so confused that he loses an understanding of what is happening in the battle.

Combining the male lead mecha with a female fighter gets you: a Giant Robot. It's a different one depending on who the male mecha combines with; with Ditas fighter it is something that could show up in Gundam, with the fighter of the Nirvanas chief pilot Meia it turns into a bird and there is also a mechanical crab (to the initial disillusion of female pilot Jura). Most of the CGI budget seems to have gone into these three signature mecha, and it shows.

In all, the art is excellent and sets a standard many newer shows do not reach.

Sound

The sound is of excellent quality. The voice actors sound like they had fun when voicing the characters, and it shows in the quality.

The background music, and the opening and closing credit will not win awards, but are no slouches either. They are all solid companions for a solid show.

The special effects are on par with the rest of the sound, solid.

Presentation

Vandread has two TV seasons called first stage and second stage, merging flawlessly. It is a space battle romp with some humor and lots of character work. But the main theme is trust. Trust in the other gender, trust in your friends, but even or more important, trust in yourself.

The real story starts with the males in the brig, fearing to be butchered and served as dinner. Through 26 episodes and two seasons, they make their place on board the ship, which is renamed Nirvana, and the females go from gnashing their teeth as they are forced to tolerate the males, to trusting them, and then to depending on them. In the end, the males and females of the crew will walk through fire for each other if necessary.

On the way there are many humorous and dramatic interludes where the male and female groups learn about each other, and the characters learn about each other personally, changing them for the better. As a Mejale who stayed behind noted when she met the girls on the Nirvana again, they had all changed, fighting together naturally and being far more at ease with themselves as well.

Lest I forget about the enemy: he is powerful, terrible, disgusting, and until the last two episodes faceless, always fighting with their mecha and ships. As a counterpoint to the community that has grown on board the Nirvana, he is always alone and does not trust anyone.
As an enemy, it is a bit of a cardboard cutout, Evil without redeeming qualities. But that is of little consequence, for Vandread is not about him, but about the crew of the Nirvana.

Nice review of Vandread though I would rate the animation department a 9. Nice storyline and plot to go with the fanservices it's been dishing out.

Still, I can't believe this anime was overlooked by so many otakus. It is really worth every quids they spent.

Highly recommended.

I agree with this review though my scoring would've been a little bit higher. ^_^ but that is me

I like Vandread and have seen the show many times. It is high on my list of favorite shows. The story is good with the characters are differant and fit well together. There are some of the shows in the series that I didn't like but as a over all I would have to give the series a good solid
B+
The reason for a B and not an A is the series was to sort. The episodes should have been better if the series was only going to be around 24 episodes. There was so much that could have been done with the relationships. There was so much under lying sex that maybe the creators could have gone all the way so to speak.

With all of that the series looked good but the early episodes were not as well done as the later ones. The first episodes were good but the art of the characters were lacking. The CG of the ships is cool and combinding it with drawn art is a different look.

I have to agree with previous posters about the score you gave the animation; it certainly deserves a 9. Overall though, excellent review. I'm new to Vandread, but I really like what I've seen, and it's on my list of all-time favorite Anime series. This review only confirms what I've been thinking for a while: Excellent series.

Everybody thinks the animation should be rated higher. I'm not going to do that.

Why? I agree that 8 is a bit low, but I think a 9 would be too high. I don't know why exactly, probably a matter of personal taste. Had there been an 8.5 option, I would have used it.
Still, for those who want a 9, we are only half a point seperated.

I would rate the series as a 9, althought I have only seen the first stage. It is easily in my top five animes favourites along with the classics Fruits Basket and Full Metal Panic. I would have to disagree about the space harem comment, as every one seems to be trying to avoid relationships with the opposite sex. I absolutely love the opening theme Trust, often just rewatching the opening title just to listen to it. Highly recommended, i'm surprised that there aren't more reviews, pictures and wallpapers on this excellent series

great review; but this anime is 9 in my personal score...

I like the storyline, although the boys become gays and girls become lesbian^^. The thing that I don;t understand in this anime is why that merchant, although from the first generation, still stay young?

I like vandread. Vandread is good animation

I like vandread very much.

I'll rate the 'art' and 'story & characters' 10 & 9 respectively, and 'sound' & 'presentation' both 9 ^^

hey! i believe vandread is a really good anime.
should be rated 9. one of my favorites. =)

I would have definitely rate it a 9 at lest maybe even a 9.5.
Oh, and I wish that then had done an english version of the manga as well!

Grt anime, the graphics, and the story line was grt. I have the entire collection. Oh! and the did have it in English version. I think it should off being rated highe than an 8.

I would also rate it a 9. I really like this series. Dita is my second favorite female in anime. the mecha designs rock.

Would rate it at least B+.

it's a really funny anime :)

The only thing you forgot is the Female ship merged with the male one.

The story is pretty dramatic too when they discover who is their ennemy...

I enjoyed it. I would have rate it a 9 because of the great anime, story, and graphics. If you have not seen it you should check it out.

never hear about unstill now but sound like old motive, well howcome emal and male taka two planet. it nonsense. so no child or child born by clone system?

Vandread is on of my Favorite animes. But like all animes it has its down points. For example a common one is setup with the story. Not only do you not understand who the enemy is for most the anime, but some decisions and motivations in the series are irrational and you dont learn the true meaning behind it till later. It also has its "boy/girl" problem in it, where two people love eachother but refuse to acknowledge it till the very end of the series.

Overall, it was a good series, and very funny. The plot and story are very original and i would recommend the anime to all fans. I give it an A

vandread is one of my favorite among the animes i have watched. i like it when they have to fight the enemies and the effects which it produces. it's a good one and funny too. recommended to all people.

I've seen this many times on tv. It's a good anime. Very different from the animes that I usually watch. The art in this anime is very nice. A good recommendation.

I like Vandread cuz' it is funny. I would rate Vandread 9. I don't know why it's just I feel like to rate it by 9
