Plot Synopsis

Yakitate looks at the glory that is Bread! 16 year old Azuma Kazuma is a boy with the legendary Solar Hands, and dreams to create ja-pan; a bread that will become a national symbol of the country. In following this dream he becomes employed by Pantasia, one of the higher status bread companies in Japan. Azuma invents mighty breads to prove his strength to the world while at the same time trying to save Pantasia from its over-bearing rival St Pierres.

Story & Characters

Yakitate Japan is a humourous and clever story about a boy called Azuma Kazuma who possesses solar hands (taiyou no te). His dream is to make ja-pan (bread [pan-the japanese word for bread] that surpasses the popularity/taste of rice in Japan, also a bread creation that is unique to Japan) . On the way of making his 'ja-pan' he meets his team mates who work in pantasias southern branch (Azusagawa Tsukino, Kawachi Kyousuke, Matsuasiro Ken, Kanmuri Shigeru, and i almost forgot Kinsoshita Kageto) and also meets some other fun characters such as the examiner and the peacock.

Pantasia and their rivals 'Saint Pierre' are constantly in battle for customers and money. Azusagawa Tsukino is the grandaughter of the president of pantaisa. Tsukino's (the manager of the southern pantasia branch) sisters: Yukino and Mizuno are in conflict to be the next Pantasia president. The southern branch members (except maybe Kageto) are constantly in a competition or batlle. I am sure thae some people will be put off by the fact that its about bread, maybe to some ,it would be lame, but i truly recommend it! It can be quite factual and inspiring. The highlights of Yakitate are the variety of characters and offcoarse the humour-you just have to see the exagguarated reactiions of Kuroyanagi (the examiner)!

Art

The art in Yakiate japan is exellent. Its art is quite detailed, the proportions are flawless.
The scenery is gorgeous, Yakitate Japan has lots of scenes of different countries, the images you see just make you want to go to Monacco and what ever other countries they visit. There is also a lot of variety in Hashigushi Takashis illustrations, from the serious and spooky glances of kanmuri, the confused face of Azuma, to the psycho expressions that Kuroyanagi puts on! The bread is also so well drawn...Hmm well i will give it a nine coz there is no 9.5

Sound

I have the soundtrack for Yakitate Japan and also the piano scores, i havent yet got sick of them. There is a mix of jazzy tunes, classical, blues to kung-fu oriented tracks. This anime is of variety. The instruments used are mainly Harmonicas, pianos and flutes. When a character by the name of Suwabara Kai appears, there is a dramatic tune with shakuhachis and taiko drums. The openings and ending themes are great, maybe just the images to the songs are a little strange O_o...The music is probably the most outstanding I have heard in any anime, its so intricate and unique..Ah i am not giving this a ten out of charity ^^

Presentation

I might have covered this already but it's highly original! I have never seen a series like this! It's so bizzare how bread can be so dramatic and interesting! Only a true genious can make bread interesting. The humour is so cute and there is just so much, but i think it is a bit hard to understand the full extent of the jokes and wittiness of this show if you don't have a background or good japanese cultural/language (it would be hard to pick up on all the puns-unless the subbers are really good). Its not just all laughter in this anime though. There are some parts where you feel very sympathetic to an issue or character. There are also many secrets yet to be uncovered-when some of them are uncovered, you would probably end up laughing because of its randomness!

The character design is awsome! This is how yakitate is so amusing. It has a mixture of dead serious, manipulative genious, person always marginalised to animal charaters.
Another fun addition to this anime is that they demonstrate how to make the bread (real footage XD). It's quite a fast moving anime, i will be sad when its over -_-. Yakiatate Japan is an alround jewel and i am so glad to have stumbled accross it!

it makes me hungry already, lol XD

Nice review! I love yakitate japan, and you expained the story well and it isnt long to read.
I understand when you say that you need a bit of cultural and language understanding. Myself, japanese-it takes me a while to notice all the jokes in an episode. I love Kurouanagi!

good review....however everytime I watch the anime makes me hungry and wanna go out of the house to buy bread x___x!

You wrote an excellent review. I love this anime. It is so funny and it makes me want to bake bread.

Hmm...I have never seen yakitate japan...It seems really interesting/cute!
I think the reveiw is very nice.

i would have given 10 for everything but since anime empire is the only one subbing it, i have to wait like a month for 2 eps or something
good review i saw a couple of spelling mistakes though

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!wICkeD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cool review i like this show

Really good review ^^ I can never remember the full names of characters. haha
But I really like this anime, it's very light hearted and promotes people to make bread! I have yet to try some of the methods that they teach you during the show. The music is good too.
Although I think Azuma's character is getting a bit too 'repetitive'..like they over emphasise how naive and wonderful at making bread he is....but it's still a wonderful anime~

I think the Yakitate anime is very original. I wonder how Hashiguchi Takashi came up with the idea to make an anime with bread. Yakitate has the funniest jokes. Sure Trinity Blood is sometimes funny but can't catch Yakitate on the funny meter. Also the most academic anime. I thought Detective conan would be the most educational anime with solving the mystery and all but this anime's got all the information on bread, yeast, flour etc

An intriguing anime for me, but great it is, no doubt about it.
Great review, revontulet. Nice work.
