Hooyaah's FLCL Tv Review

FLCL

Rated: 6

The presentation is once again, as the story line, just a bit too confusing as it jumps from one scene to another with little continuity and little to hold it all together in any recognizable semblance of a whole. I believe that the writers flubbed the opportunity to make an outstanding series. Regrettably, following the plot is a struggle, too say the very least and it is probably best for the new viewer of the series not to try and look for a plot but instead just let it deliver itself toward the end by surprise. There are some feeble attempts at humor, like the police detective, Kitsurubami, who is investigating Haruko. He has glued on rectangular black eyebrows that annoy and seem to confuse other characters, especially his female assistant.

While it is true that I really do love FLCL, it doesn't warrant the higher score I would love to give it. Even though sound, animation, characterization and story are all there, it is hard to ignore how long they take to discover. Still, I recommend FLCL to anyone with the patience to stumble upon something unexpected. Even though it may not be catch your eye at first, good art takes time to appreciate. It really is worth the time.

It's very difficult to find an anime that is not afraid to be bold, and, let's face it — just a little insane.

Originality
Even if it is short, it ranks high on originality. All the characters are far from mundane, the weapons and "enemies" are as strange as the characters, and the story is actually a bit complex (as are some jokes, amazingly enough). You have to watch it a few times to get everything (thankfully, for marathon watchers, it is butt-friendly since it is only 6, half-hour episodes spanning a little under 3 hours).

Humor
Some of the jokes and gags used in here are somewhat cliche', but its done in such a way that it's funny again. Other gags are just funny regardless , such as when Naota needed to bat a meteorite in the shape of a "sinker" baseball using a bass guitar that Haruko pulled out of his head is either funny or weird, or some combination of the two.

To be as frank as possible Fooly Cooly is as original as Bandai's presentation of .hack//sign. And we all know that story. Bandai takes a huge chance, spends millions and makes: an anime series, an OVA and OST for that anime and a manga and they made more than they spent in vrey little time. Fooly Cooly was presented....uniquely...it was all backwards at some point but in the end it all made sense. Every last part. There is no FLCL video game (I wish but even so what would it be about?). The humor in Fooly Cooly was really great. It is really great. Fooly Cooly is only 6 episodes but each one felt like it added a year of happiness to my life. It was so much fun to watch Naota grow up in this 'coming of age/you can't control me' story. It fit my personality perfectly.

Megami's FLCL Tv Review

FLCL

Rated: 5

This series was pretty damn original, I'll give it that. I've never seen anything like it. The creators seriously must have been on crack or something when they were writing this. Most of the things in this series are incredibly strange and random. These guys really have an imagination.
The humor is very random as I mentioned before. Most of the time I was just sitting there going "what? That makes no sense" I admit, I did chuckle a few times at the weirdness, but the humor just got to a point where I got sick of it and wanted to shut it off. (My boyfriend made me continue watcjing it though. He said it got better and I believed him.

Furi Kuri is a true original. I can’t really think of any anime, or manga, that reminds me of FLCL, or visa versa. The story line, though not so intricate or divulged as say, Robin Witchhunter, or Chobits, it still has an innate ability to morph and mutate into something exceptionally exciting, and involved. Plus, it doesn’t draw on and on, as some anime series seem to do (obviously I HAVE to mention Inuyasha at this point, dear god, get on with it already!). It’s fresh, new and hip. All in all, the originality is a perfect ten.

Also, the humor of Furi Kuri is absolutely Japan! Everything about it screams Japanese! The expressions, the mannerisms, the subtle anger x’s and mushroom air-puffs.

Well if you haven't already guessed it, I love FLCL. The plot, the animation, and the music are all treasures to me. From my experience I'd never seen anything as original as Fooly Cooly before and I probably never will in the future. As I've mentioned the series clocks in at a short and sweet 6 episodes. Besides that there are two volumes of manga (Which strays quite a bit from the anime's plot, but I still think it's worth getting), two CDs (Which of course are mostly music, however the second one has like script readings or something and contain original mini-adventures. Of course that's just what I've heard. I still need to buy those), and two novelizations (Though I have no idea how they compare to the anime or even where to get them).

FarawayAdmirer's FLCL Tv Review

FLCL

Rated: 10

FLCL was presented in a way that was unforgettable. From the very first scene, to the very last, GAINAX had a unique way of approaching FLCL that can't be described in words. It will weird you out. It will intrigue you. It will blow your mind. It will confuse you in such a way, that you will feel strangely satisfied with the anime. It has quite a bit of humor, and parodies a few animes and American Pop Culture references along the way. It is an anime that will bring you back to watching it over and over, whether it be to get a better understanding of it, or just for your enjoyment. Some say they find FLCL confusing. At times, it is. It is a plot, with complex themes tied around it, with an insane, action-packed exterior.
