Fatal Frame game Review

Fatal Frame

When her elder brother goes missing, Miku Hinasaki tracks him down to an old, dilapidated mansion in the woods of Japan. Upon her arrival she discovers the Himuro mansion to be possessed by the vengeful spirits of the dead; pleading children, lost souls, and murderous ghosts walk the manor, and all who enter become cursed by the “Rope Maiden.” Armed with her sixth sense and a mysterious Camera Obscura that photographs the supernatural, Miku must unravel the mystery of the manor in order to rescue her brother and leave the grounds alive.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

While visiting the woods where they used to play as children, twins Mio and Mayu Amakura find themselves drawn in to the haunted All God’s Village. Tormented souls roam the village and the voice of a girl’s insane laughter fills the air as the twins search for a way out. As Mio you battle the ghosts with the Camera Obscura, keeping an eye out for your sister as crimson butterflies lure her further in to the nightmarish village. Escape is their only chance of survival, and the further they delve in to the night the closer they draw to the “ritual”, and they begin to uncover the horrifying truth about the village… and its twins.

Fatal Frame III: The Tormented

After a tragic accident that claims her fiancé’s life, Rei Kurosawa tries to move on. Pursuing her love of photography, she visits locations of claimed haunting… until she begins dreaming of one. One night she is drawn in to a mansion in pursuit of her deceased lover, and in the dream she is touched by an angry spirit that burns a tattoo in to her body. Though the nightmare was horrifying enough, the worst comes in the realization that the tattoo remains… after she has woken up. Night after night she dreams of the haunted mansion, and every morning the tattoo spreads further. In sleep she wanders the manor with the Camera Obscura for protection, and during the day dreams and reality begin to bleed in to one another. In order to escape the curse of the Manor of Sleep, Rei must delve further in to her dreams and unearth the manor’s sorrowful past, before she- or others that have been pulled in to the nightmare- are claimed.

Story & Playability

First off, I just wanna say that this is my first time submitting a review. So please forgive me if this review is biased or anything. Its exactly my thoughts of this horror game. :)

The two protagonist of the story are Mio and Mayu Amakura, a pair of twin sisters. While they were visiting their secret spot where they used to play, Mayu follows a crimson butterfly and Mio has to go after her. In the end, both of them got themselves stuck in an abandoned village called All God's Village, where they always have twins to perform a cruel ritual of the elder twin killing the younger twin to prevent the Hellish Abyss from swallowing the whole village.

Unfortunately, Mio and Mayu's return path has vanished so they have no choice but to venture through this dark and lost village. Both of them found the Camera Obscura, a camera with excorcism powers. This camera is their precious 'weapon' against those attacking ghosts.

Mayu always vanishes every now and then, being possessed by vengeful ghost of Sae, one of the twins who was forced to perform the ritual before the whole village disappeared. And its up to Mio to rescue her elder sister and escape before Sae seeks to complete the ritual....

I love the story a lot. Its very exciting and original...

Graphics

Seriously, the FMV pictures and the graphics....one word - AWESOME. Even the illustrations of Mio and Mayu on the back of the game cover is fantastic. And it is because that the graphics are so surreal, it makes this game more horrifying ><

But then again, the places in the village are really too dark. Even Mio's flashlight isn't really helping. I always have to turn on to Finder Mode (use the camera view) to see things clearer.

There are two flaws though.

#1. If you have played Fatal Frame I or maybe III, you will notice that the three female protagonist for each story really resembles each other. Techmo really has to improve on the character face designing. But the girls' outfits are really very nice.

#2. Not enough facial expressions. Yeah, you may see those basic expressions of being frightened but other than that, I think there's no more. Mayu disappears every now and then and Mio, well, she doesn't seem worried or anything. And even when she finally finds her sister, there is no expression of relief either o_0

Sound

Actually, this game is not that all scary with you turn down the volume. The eerie music really gives you the creeps and makes you feel like you have to always be on your guard 'cause this is a horror game, anything will come out and scare the hell out of you. So this proves that how powerful the power of music is XD

What impresses me the most is the theme song for Fatal Frame II - Chou, sung by Tsukiko Amano :) Anyways, the song is really great and it is played at the end of the game. Amano has done a good job singing this song. The song is nice...but can be kinda scary sometimes...

Fun

Overall, you'll never get a relaxing moment playing this game, even while watching the cutscenes. I remember myself screaming when this Fallen Women appeared and dropped from the ceiling. Yeah, I admit I'm a bit scared playing horror games so go ahead and call me "Miss Timid" XP

The game is kinda difficult, even though I played in Easy Mode. Seriously, without a map, you will never know where you are going because all the japanese ancient houses are so big and there are lots of rooms. Some of the doors are barely visible. It took me 1 year to finish playing the game XD Cause my mum only allows me to play during long term holidays.

And the ghosts....some you may find easy to play but some are seriously a big pain in the butt. Chitose Tachibana was a real pain. Not in the sense of fighting, but in the sense of finding her! If not, I won't be able to continue throughout the story. And battling the Rope Man was really a challenge.

The thing that's best about Fatal Frame II is that the way they present you the story is really interesting, yet horrifying at the same time. Sometimes I get so afraid that I feel like giving up playing the game but then, I really feel like continuing cause the story is really interesting.

Fatal Frame II is really a nice horror game. So grab the game today and give yourself a nice scare XD

The best thing about the game is the theme song Chou by Tsukiko Amano. Very majestic and nicely suited to the game, and of course, the TGS trailer.

Seems unbiased enough. Never played the Fatal Frame series before though. Why?

...cuz I rarely get to buy any choice of games nowadays... :(

Horror games are usually difficult... even on Easy Mode. Kinda like Resident Evil Outbreak's difficulty. I play that game and I still get scared. Heck, I was scared, so I wouldn't play the other levels until I was able to get the cheat "Infinity" mode for infinite ammo. XD

This game will probably scare me even more than Resident Evil, so I'll probably pick it up someday. :]

This is the game tht took me 1/2 year to finish it. Yes, the storyline was Superb! The game end with a sad moment...I nearly burst into tears at the time Mio chasing the butterfly and the theme song 'Chou' played at the same time. ^^". I like horror games but scared to play it. I guest thts why it took me a long time.^^"Hehehehehehe.....but im glad i manage to finish it...yay..!^^

Now I'm playing Fatal Frame III.Hehehe...until now, the most scary moment was when a ghost called crawling lady (I guest..^^") suddenly appear in front of me. The view at a first person view. I was on the way to find a shrine room, crawling under a small space!O_O. Hehehe....if u guys had play the 1st and 2nd of Fatal Frame, better play this one too...

Yeah....Fatal Frame. Seriously I am obessed with these video games. This genre is unforgetable. The story is dark and intense dealing with all the deepest and strongest of human emotions. The horror is beyond compare in any other game and you nailed it on the head that there is not a moment of true peace in the game, not even the theme song is relaxing. Seriously I recommend everyone because it is truley unforgetable game series.

  19. BeN-G Apr 01, 2006

Yeah i love this series, but i cant seem to get passed the 1st one still loool, but i love the game its the best horror series goin :D

  20. auraderecca Aug 10, 2006

Fatal Frame II - Crimson Butterfly. Haha.. i got stuck on this one.. but i must say that it was really captivating. My friends and i were all cuddled around trying to find a way through the mansion & when the ghosts' appeared, we were all screaming our heads off. Haha...

Anyway, it's true that the girls didn't really have expressions on. It would really have been much more captivating if they were more full of expressions. Haven't completed the game, as i'm stuck, but it's really fun up till now.

Great review though it's your first. keep up the good work kies! =)

I remember this. You started screaming mid-way of the game, which induced me to started shrieking at the appearance of the Kimono woman. ^_^'

  22. efrasfire Oct 24, 2008

Fatal Frame II for me is undoubtedly the best, 1 and 3 are also good but I think 2 is the law.
