Kanon

Kanon tv Review

When his parents are transferred overseas, Yuuichi Aizawa is forced to move in with his cousin, Nayuki, whom he hasn't seen for 7 years. All his memories of the time he had spent there in the past have faded, but with a series of encounters starting on the first day, his memories slowly start returning... along with the reason he lost them in the first place.

Synopsis: shadowfoxza.

Story & Characters

I watched Air first and can see a huge amount of similarities between the two. However, i would have to say that Kanon does a much better job at presenting this type of story line. The series is able to have Yuuichi meet each of the special characters, and be altered by their encounter. Each character has a different effect on him, though there is the constant meetings with the significant one. The storyline might seem really random and weird, but it is because it composes multiple characters to bring back Yuuichi's memories of something that is truly important. All through the series there were multiple hints to something major going on, and at the end it is all released to bring a really *WoW* feeling. Kanon did a VERY nice job at presenting this strange but impressive romance series.

The characters were the ones that made this series very interesting, each character played an important part in Yuuichi's past, and now present. While they all seemed normal, there is always something just not quite right with each of them, but Yuuichi always somehows fixes everything. Each character is memorable and contribute a lot to the series. The only messed up part was the relationship between Yuuichi and Nayuki. With what we see of him and everyone else does not make sense when he is with Nayuki, and it really throws everything off at the last couple of episodes. Though the series seems to of focused on them in the beginning, Nayuki is practically forgotten for 10 episodes. I liked how the series spent time to introduce all of the characters, and then slowly create the conflict for each of them later on.

Art

The weak point of this series would have to of been the animation. Its easy to see how hard the artists was trying to bring the cute large eyed characters, but what killed it was the face. The eyes were nice, but the over all shapes was HORRIBLE. Yuuichis face is a triangle, and was just ugly and disturbing. Though the other characters were decently drawn, they were still pretty bad. Also because the series also stuck with the idea that it would be better if everything was cuter, thus no one looks like they are over 25, which made Nayukis mom look really weird and out of place. The series did try to help moments become more special, like with snow, but everything was still a bit too cliche. But they do get a nice try effort.

Sound

The OP might not be that great, but the brief 30 sec intro is just beautiful. I liked watching that better than the OP itself. The soundtrack is pretty good with lots of really nice songs that fit the series perfectly. The ED is okay but like the OP, not that great. The voices were okay for most of the characters, but a couple people like Nayuki had a really high pitched voice, which was okay but felt really really whiny. The series tried a little too hard again to make everything cute which thought didnt heart the series that much, just made it feel even more unusual when added with an already unsual story.

Presentation

This series is a great series for those who like Romance series with a little quirk in them. If you liked Da Capo and Air, you will really like this series. The characters and storyline was the highlight of this series. Though accompanied by dissappointing animation. The series does start with a pretty good mood which made it look like a harem drama romance series between Nayuki and everyone else, but the series quickly ended that approach with some very unexpecting moments and characters which dramatically changed the series into something a lot of special.
Despite having to watch the ugly main guy character all the time, the series was really fun to watch. It was interesting how each characters past and present conflict is unravelled with a really suprising ending.

As a heads-up, your assigned scores for art and sound have been adjusted to bring them in line with your written description of the artwork and sound for Kanon. Other than that minor discrepancy, this is a good review.

Hey, what don't you like about art? It's beautiful... and music is nice, especially endings... but i agree with the rest points :)
