Diamond Dust Drops tv Review

Story & Characters

If a couple witnessed the Diamond Dust Drops together, then they will be granted eternal happiness. If anyone were to see the Diamond Dust Drops, make a wish and it will definitely be granted.

All in all, the story is about how 6 girls from Hokkaido cope with their life juggling career with love and friendship and kinship and how the diamond dust affects them and eventually links them together in search of their true meaning of life. With only 2 episodes each for each character, you can choose which character story that you like.

1. Atsuko
A girl who works with her mother at the fish-selling stand that her father left behind when he died. She's sad because she couldnt do what others her age does:parties or out karaokeing. She's twenty years old and yet she has to get married to this guy because of circumstances with the business. Enter this jazz-otaku and well, Atsuko kinda have a crush on him. Pretty much a common Japanese story. Regarding Atsuko, she has drive, she works hard for her mother but somehow, feels suffocated because of lack of freedom to choose

2. Karin
A girl who has spent the past two years at a Hokkaido hospital fighting a serious respiratory disease. She needs an operation to live, but refuses ignorantly due to her father's previous death from botched surgery. I pretty much didnt like her character at all. She's irritating bcos her brother slogs so hard to pay her 2 YEARS HOSPITAL FEES!! and she didnt even KNOW that! It takes A LOT to cajole her to take the surgery and well, you guys can guess what happens in the end rite?

3. Kyoko
I dislike her character! She's bossy and unreasonable. But that was my initial feelings. As the story continues, i realised all she wanted badly was the Best Film award. Kyoko is a driven person, she has won the Most Memorable Film award but due to pressure, she seems to want more than that. From a director who is understanding and takes whatever beatiful scenes turned to dominant and ignorant film director desperate to win the best film award. Of all the series, this is my 3rd BEST.

4. Suomi
The only characyer with only one episode which is a shame because i really LOVE her story. So far my favourite! She's a girl who loves ice-skating and by wishing upon the Diamond dust drops, she hopes she and her freind will win the gold award. But how was that possible? Anyways, she came to Japan and met Haruto who happens to be an ice-skater too, whom she taught that friendship is always important despite the stiff competition.

5. Shuoko
A radio DJ who has an affair with a married man. I hated her for clinging on to him when it was already clear that the man only wanted lust. She happens to receive a mail from her fan asking her what to do bcos her husband cheated on her. Unwilling to answer because she herself cant help but have an affair. In came her 'stalker' who gave her encouraging words and in the end, she decided to break up with the man.

6. Akari
My 2nd best story. Her story is definitely heart-wrenching beacsue it involves kinship. She is a klutz. She works in a dessert shop so when a customer calls, instead of "Moshi Moshi" she will accidentally says "Irrasahi!" Aahaha, a ditzy girl. Anyways, her father, a drunkard, believes in gold-mining but it is not that easy to find gold nowadays. Akari forced him to find work but couldnt. Unknown to her, her father is dying soon. He brought her to the place where he brought Akari's mother to gold mine. He then told Akari about the DDD but she didnt beleive him. Well, im not giving any spoilers but this story is enough to make me cry.

Sure enough, everyone crosses paths in Sapporo in the end, just in time to see - you guessed it - the Diamond Dust. A great ending for a short anime. I wasnt sure how this story is going to end because of all the shifts in stories and characters. Some of the stories were less interesting than the others but NONE was let down.

Which is my favourite character?
Well, Atsuko was lively and energetic. Karin was irritating but kind, Kyoko was a little rough around the edges, but strong. Suomi was a bit strange, but free-spirited. Shouko was fragile, but mature. Akari was determined and dependable.

But...my favourite got to be Akari! cos i cant be as a klutz like her..Aahahha!

A must see anime?
Well yeah! Its only 12 EPISODES!! Get them guys! Watch it!

Art

Boy, i do write a lot for the review.....

Anyways, the art is amazing but somehow wierd. I think its because of the head proportion. And can Sumoi's hair be any wierder?

The scenery of Hokkaido is simply breathtaking. I have never been there but the scenery is enough to make me visualise i am there! The background and setting work demonstrate careful attention to detail helping to communicate the character of the various individual cities and locations that the stories take place. This excellent setting actually acts like strength to the weak characterisation. By bringing the setting to life so well, it placed the various characters in the context of seemingly real locations and places, this helped make the characters seem a bit more real.

Sound

Kyaa!! You just have to love the ending them, "Aitai ~Love Theme from Kita e.~" by ALLEY:A. It is soothing and melodious. You can be seen humming this song wherever you go. When you hear it, you can feel the singers pain and feelings. Its a song that you could relate to. I may not know the meaning but if you know a little bit of Japanese, you will find this song touching. When i first heard this song from the anime, i was like, "Oh GAWD!! I have to find this SONG, definitely, NO MATTER WHAT!" The emotions is brought higher by the saxaphone that will be played in the middle of the song. Just so you know, i memorised this whole song because i really went ga-ga over it..

"....Doko made mo, doko made mo, Anata to nara aruite yukeru....Tsunaida te wo tashikamete sou futari kiri de, Aitai anata ni mahou no konayuki ga tooi jikan wo keshitekureru.........."

Haaa.....

Anyways, the opening, "Hop, Step, Jump" by Five Spirits are sung by you guessed it, the girls themselves, altho, Shuko, the DJ, didnt sing it. This song is upbeat and when i first heard it i was like, "Whaaa?" bcos it doesnt suit the story at all. First off, the anime is melodramatic, low toned but the song is too energetic for a series like that. Unlike the ending theme which really suits the anime bcos it is melodious and really reflects the characters!

I do have one complain though. There was a mismatch of seiyuus. Atsuko's voice is too high and pitchy. I can get tired listening to it but since the seiyuus new, we cant blame her. Anyways, i am pretty much irritated and can go maaad just by listening to the seiyuu of Karin. When she coughs, she doesnt go "Cough, cough" she goes, "aha, ha,ha" well, what the heck is that? Is that a cough or laughing? Overall, she also has a pitchy voice and tends to exaggerate aLOT. The rest is okay, altho, Shuko, as a DJ, she tends to have a DEEP, RASPY voice whch is not a good thing for a DJ. A DJ needs a gentle and a clear voice.

Presentation

It is rare that an anime can provide a coherent story in just one or two episodes. Every story is fast-paced, but also admires the beauty of the surrounding places and scenic spots. It is after all paying homage to the 'travelling game'. Each story has its own levels of humor, romance, and melodrama. And I enjoyed each one up until the end. The last episode shows all the girls in one city (Sapporo), some intertwining with one another, and then finally enjoying their first experience with the diamond dust.

There are also two characters who show up in cameos, randomly in each girl's story, it's kinda funny to see them. In the last episode we know their names and their own little story. It's very nice. Actually, this anime is very nice overall.

A recommended watch.

MOve away from fast paced, action animes like Nrauto, Bleach and give some way to Diamond Dust ya?

I disagree; I really like the personal touch cagalli88 gives in this review. If I wanted to know what happens in the story, I could just go off and read a plot synopsis. Instead, this review really expresses how well the anime was executed while still assigning scores objectively, though it could perhaps be a bit more polished.

    Overall, kudos are in order.
