Honey and Clover

Honey and Clover tv Review

Story & Characters

The story in Honey and Clover start as your typical college teen drama. We have Takemoto, Mayama and Morita who go to a art school while staying in a run down apartment. And then we have the girls Hagumi (loli looking and always bully by Morita), Yamada (who is in love with Mayama) and Rika (girl that Mayama like). The story explore their lives as they grow up, their friendship, their love life and their struggle through adolescene. What fascinate me about this show is that it isn't like an ordinary jdrama and kdrama. It is very realistic and I can really see it happening in real life and I am sure everyone can relate to them. Most of the time we can hear the characters narrative and from this we can really see how well the characters have developed over the course of the show. The story focuses a lot on the characters and the story make you feel for them. More importantly, none of the main cast got left out. Each of them have their own story and is given equal amount of time to shine on the show. The plot is good and the side characters tie in well into the show. The show isn't like your typical shounen or shoujo show, I think it is targetted at more adult market (18-20+age groups). Younger audience might find this show boring and slow paced since there is hardly any action or anything going on.

Art

The art is above average. Not the best but it is good as Honey and Clover is not an action anime that require art like GITS or Macross Zero. On the other hand, we are treated to some beautiful background, details drawing and pleasant looking characters. The artworks is very different from the manga part and i prefer the anime version over the manga art. In my opinion, one of the main draw of the show is Hagumi. A 18 years old that is drawn to look like a elementary school kid. All you lolicon out there will defintely enjoy this, lol. Plus, the anime also switches the art work well when there is joke and it is hilarious looking at them. The characters switches to their comical look or morph into super deformed mode and back without looking out of place. The expression drawn on their faces is priceless.

Sound

Sounds is good too. I love the opening Dramatic by YUKI. Really set the tone for the show. There are lots of background music and songs playing during key scenes on the show and this set up the atmosphere well. The others music or insert songs or mostly jpop/jrockish which are ok. I am also impressed by the seiyuu of Hagumi and Morita. I am suprised that the seiyuu for Morita is actually Ueda Yuji, the same guy that does the sound for keitaro in love hina .It really suit them well and the narratives by the characters is the best of the show. The others music

Presentation

Honey and Clover is one of the more low profile show of 2005. I hardly heard any hype or rave about it. Luckily i randomly stumble upon it on IRC and I watch all of it under a week. This is one of the best show of 2005. It is well presented and after watching it I really started to think about my own life. The humour is well presented. I found myself laughing almost as much as when i watch Azumanga Daioh or School Rumble. Show like Honey and Clover come once in a blue moon. It might seen bland from the screenshots or synopsis but its content and concepts are great. There is drama in it and on the same time it is also a comedy, it switches between them so easily that you would not even notice it. It is one of the most original anime I ever watch. I dont think I will watch another anime with this much characters interaction and development again. If your bored of repetitive show like naruto or brainless fanservice like shuffle, da capo or tenjou tenge, watch this. Some people might not like the ending as it is very open but I think that is because the manga is still ongoing. Even with the shortcoming, I gurantee you would not be dissapointed.

Very good review, yieloon. I agree with you very much on your description of the story and characters. The story is indeed targeted for 18+ because of the conflict and thoughts you will encounter at that age and up. And just like you said, those who have not reached that age may find this show boring because they simply can't relate to the characters and situations. Good review! *thumbs up*

I watched this show and it was great. It was quite different from the fanservice-y anime that has been coming out lately aimed at teenagers. I liked a lot how the colour was used; and it had nice moments both comedy and drama.
I didn't like the ending because it just focused on Takemoto and the story with Yamada, Mayama, Morita and Hagu was almost forgotten but still; it was a very good series.

PD: a live action movie is coming, for Honey and Clover.

Indeed, H&C is definitely a series for an older age...as someone almost graduating college...I really felt touched by how realistic the series was...it brought up a lot of really important and emotional issues...

and like crap, I'd almost give it a perfect 10...(if only it were longer...sigh) :)

The review it's very acurate and well done. This anime it's mi favorite ever because it goes beyond the usual TV Drama emotional problems, you can feel the struggle and the fear in every minute of the show. I felt really moved by the special friendship that all the characters share (everytime Ayu cried I cried with her, and Morita-senpai jokes makes me laugh so much lol) and I enjoyed every single episode. On the other hand, you're right about the art and the music, the art it's not perfect but it's not that bad, the music it's great, the lyrics are well matched with the situations while you're seeing them (Suga Shikao, SPITZ, Suneohair, etc. All of them did a great job with their songs, I just love them all ^^) and gave a deep touch to the characters sufferings. This anime also shows the search of your place in the world, the fight between talent and courage in the tough world of arts, the expectations, the dreams and the suffer that the unrequired love gaves. The deepest point is "the search" the search for happiness, the search for perfection (you see this in Morita and Hagu), the search for love (this is the situation of Ayu, Takemoto, Nomiya and Mayama), the search beyond the discovery of love (you see this in Hagu and Morita), the search for the past and the lost (like Rika-san and her dead husband T^T) and -finally- the search of yourself, the travel to find that side of yourself that holds the key of your future (or the key of the future that you want to achieve).

This one it's not an easy anime, just like everyone said it's ideal for university students ( an people +18 and almost perfect for +20 >_^) who knows how hard it's to pass the adolesce and start to face the complex world of adulthood. I highly recommend this anime... it's perfect (and the manga it's one of the best and most readed top 10 shoujo manga <3 in Japan).

I liked this series a lot too! It took some time to get into since I wasn't totally sure what was going on. The synopsis and the storyline at the beginning didn't seem to match up. It did, but it wasn't what I was expecting ^^ But I liked it cuz of the realism in it. It definitely isn't for kids since the whole series is about college students and their struggles and strengths through it. I really liked Takemoto though, cuz I find myself going through the same phase as him about being mediocre in his work and stuff like that.

It's cute, sweet, touching and all that good stuff without being unrealistic how some of the other series seem to be. I will admit that seeing the manga art, I was put off by it, but I like the art from the anime. Good job on the review!

I full heartedly agree. Hachikuro ranks pretty much at the top of my anime list. The story is laid out very well and its not everyday that you find an anime about growing up and love without it being all sappy. The clean subtle humour and drama is good too. I remember laughing my ass off while watching the Twister episode, then almost crying when Mayama was carrying Yamada on his back.

The music and insert songs goes very well with the anime. It adds to the mood of the scene and makes the anime that much better.

Contrary to most other anime, this one stays pretty much the same as the manga. There are also symbolisms scattered throughout the story which makes you think a bit (like the bicycle wheel, the Ferris Wheel).

Overall, I really enjoyed watching it, and I'm glad that I did. In fact, I'm currently re-watching it, and I don't re-watch anime often. It's just so good that, after finishing it nearly a month or two ago, it still tugs and me and makes me want to go back.

I been wondering, is there any pre university or pre college students that like this show?

It will be interesting if they do a live action, who are they gonna find to be the actress for Hagu-chan.

This is for sure one of my favor anime this year and for years to come. The story is well connected with real life people. I could easly imagine myself in their shoes. The plot is well mature and well develop, plus is real funny. The only thing I hoped for through out the series was to see their love resolve. Considering the manga is on going I well just let that go.

I well be looking forward for the live action movie.
