Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin tv Review

Ten years after the beginning of the Meiji Era, a wandering samurai came to Tokyo. This man, known as Himura Kenshin later on, ends up living in a Kamiya Kasshin dojo and teach kendo for a living.

However, his life is not as simple, as turmoils arise from time to time, unfolding his true nature as the famous Hitokiri Battousai, the greatest killer of the Bakumatsu. However, vowing never to kill again, he tries as hard as he can not to draw his sword until the critical moment comes, and so far, manages to escape his bloody past.

Until the day when an old menace, in the form of Shishio Makoto, the successor to the Hitokiri Battousai, threatens the peace of the new Meiji Era. Shishio and his Juppon Gatana are ready to start a new revolution to correct the evils of Western influence, and forced Himura Kenshin, along with his new friends, once again raise his sword to protect their loved ones.

Story & Characters

When people ask me about Rurouni Kenshin...i usually have two words in my head..which i always say when tis anime is mentioned...and that is..."True Classic"...when it is to me in my opinion. When i first watched this anime...i was truly hooked on by the first episode. The story is basically about a rurouni...or a traveller..KENSHIN...(duh) haha...he is such an endearing character...many people have grown to like him as the anime series progresses...his appeal seem to be able to impress not only a female audience...male audience are drawn too. Simply because this anime showcases some of the more widely welcome themes...Skill, power, loyalty, love and even humour. This anime showcases many different arcs. Well, to me...the most enjoyable arc is actually the one of shishio makoto. Kenshin is truly a lovable character. He is drawn in such a way that he kinda looks like a girl, red long hair, small, short..BEAUTIFUL eyes. He looks like a harmless effeminate guy...but as soon as someone offends him or someone precious to him, they have to bear his wrath. For under that gentle cover is a ruthless murderer, highly skilled in swordmanship. As soon as he draws out his sword, all around him are bound to fall. However, another twist to the anime is, the fact that he carries a reverse blade katana. This ironically prevents him from killing as the blade doesn't cut flesh..(rather strange). The anime is flows on story after story of ken-san's encounters with opponents getting more and more powerful as the anime progresses. The filler episodes are however, SURPRISINGLY nice. Although many people can get irritated with filler episodes, it is a different story in RK. Kenshin earns himself three very reliable companions in this anime, namely, Myojin Yahiko, Sansuke Sagara and the lady in his life, Kaoru. The anime is filled with intrigueing twists and turns that keeps it's veiwers captured. Therefore, i encourage everyone to watch rurouni kenshin. It is truly a wonderful classic and i have confidence that it will not fail you despite being quite old.

Art

Nice nice nice nice!! haha...sorry about that, rurouni kenshin is ranked no.2 in my list of favourite animes beating around 60 titles. This anime is old. However, the art is still very beautiful. The males are drawn cool, sleek, clean and powerful. Many have grown to love not only the main character kenshin but also his other opponents. A couple hot favourites to mention is Shinomori Aoshi, Saito Hajime, Seta Soujiro, Myojin Yahiko, Sanosuke Sagara...the art is basically very traditional. One sad thing is, the costumes seldom, almost never shange. Thus, you just see the characters dressed the same way throughout the whole anime. The one facter that caught my eye in this anime is actually the eyes of the characters. They are by far, the most lively and full of expression compared to the many others i have seen. The eyes are able to show pain, determination, anger, vengeance and even madness. The backgrounds usually depict japan in its older days and they actually acurate enough to give us audiences a clear picture of the setting of japan at that time. I really liked the shrines, pathways, shophouses, dojos, rivers and enev the graveyard. The backgrounds do well in bringing out the characters intentions, actions, mood and feeling.

Sound

A very wide range indeed. Some are catchy, some are soothing and probably one or two of them rather horrible in my opinion. I managed to get my hands on almost every song in the anime, even the image songs. I loved most of the openings and closings as most of them are catching. However, one i particularly liked was namida shiteiru, sung by the seiyuu of ken-san herself. Oh yeah, i was rather surprised when i found out about this. Kenshinwas voiced by a female, come to think about, t actually explains why he sometime sounds like a lady eh?? No complains on the voicing though, that's because i watched the aime in it's original japanese sounds with english subtitles. The image songs match the characters very well. One of my favourite character is seta soujiro and the title of his image song is called innocent eyes.(i think??)
Very matching indeed. Thus, to all who have watched or intend to watch this anime, i encourage to try to get your hands on the songs in this anime as well. They will kinda grow on you after some time and they are truly endearing when you fall in love with this anime.

Presentation

"Oro??!!" As wierd as it sounds, this word/sound/expression is actually the source of humour in this anime. It is a famous word said by kenshin when there is a cofusion or something wierd has occurred. The filler episodes are the funny ones. There are many with Kouru on the verge of killing the three men for living off her without much contributions to the household except kenshin. Ken-san does HOUSEWORK!! It is side-splitting enough to see kenshin the greatest swordsmen wearing an apron or doing the laundry. One reason this anime is enjoyable is the fact that it isn't too heavy. As kenshin meets many opponents and get into many life-endangering battles, the anime does not bombard the audience with one death battle after another without any breather in between. In RK, we get small funny events happening in between every big event, that allows us audience a time to take a break from all the nail-biting we have to go through. Thus, we are able to sit back a relax during the anime without too many consecutive stresses through the whole anime. Concept of this anime if clear cut. We are not left hanging halfway with millions of questions in our head. Thus, once again, i hope i had put accross my point clearly that this is a good anime not to be missed by an anime fan in the world...muahaha

I have the whole series on dvd. One of the best anime there will ever be. Its legendary and I doubt anything can stand up to this series in the Samurai genre. Saito Hajime is the coolest ! AKU SOKU ZAN !

  3. fairy21 Dec 05, 2005

Himura kenshin is my favorite character ever, I wish that those last like 30 fillers could have just been the awsome revenge arc though

i like the review, maybe because im a fan of rurouni. well ya its true its old but it is the best anime ive ever seen.....

  12. hikoseijuro Dec 09, 2005

Hiko Seijuro, Shinta's (Kenshin) master, is truly an awasome person with strong personality. I like him along with Kenshin, but a little bit more. The reason is he lives as a hermit. Rather than living in a world full of chaos and solve problems in it, he tries to understand himself with Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu and beat the evil that resides within him. In reality this is all the masters of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu did. Also he does not have any woman to accompany him or anyone else. This means he is self sufficient. VERY FEW MEN CAN LIVE LIKE THAT! Again this makes him even more awasome! If you haven't seen the Hiko Seijuro's past in manga, you will not understand what I mean by that! However, if you can get info on Hiko or his previous masters from a good website or books (possibly japanese!), you will understand why he is so important as to the series as well as to me! :))

i've got the whole series (+ OVAs and movie) on dvd... and while agree with you on almost everything, i must say that if you include the last 20 or so episodes of the series i would have given it a 9 for storyline... (why couldn't they just include the Jinchuu Arc like the manga?)

  14. irsin Dec 09, 2005

Rurouni Kenshin is very interesting :)

A task for you... (translate it)

  19. videl01 Dec 13, 2005

Rurouni Kenshin is really good because not only is the main character interesting, the other characters are interesting as well. The depth of the story is excellent its dramatic to comical. all of these generes mixed into one show. which just proves how appealing it is to both female and male audiences.

  20. runemaster Dec 13, 2005

Story in the anime differs from the manga when the anime is reaching it's end. I think the storyline in the anime near the end are getting crazier.
And oh, characters in Rurouni Kenshin does based on real historical figure, although their personality are not entirely true(of course^^)

To me Rurouni Kenshin is an anime classic. It the first anime that go me into samurai sword and stuff. If I just go by manga, I think is the best manga I ever read, I finish all the volume in 3 days, I read while eating. Thanks God that all the volume was translated the time I found it. (I read it before the U.S release manga)
