To Heart

To Heart tv,manga,game Review

The series revolves around Akari Kamigishi, Hiroyuki Fujita, their friends and new friends they meet along the way. Akari and Hiroyuki have been childhood friends and next door neighbors since they were in kindergarten. One of their most important friends is Multi a robot that starts attending their school as training so that her data may be used for future prototypes. She’s a special prototype as she has feelings and emotions where as others like Serio do not.

Story & Playability

The story of To Heart is relatively simple and straight forward as it is a simple high-school drama. Following the simple lives of Hiroyuki, Akari, Multi, and others, the growing love triangle of such is cute, for lack of a better word. The story does progress slowly thru it's short 13 episodes so it is not an anime for those with a short attention span. Side characters also make short appearances and the small side tracks usually result in Hiroyuki solving a said problem. Still, this anime being based off of a dating sim game, it does so relatively well compared to other titles. To Heart does it's best of focusing on growing bonds between all the characters, but you'll quickly discover that it is primarily focused on Akari and Hiroyuki.

The second season, To Heart ~Remember My Memories~, is a well placed addition to the series. Also spanning over 13 episodes, ~RMM~ takes a shot at a more dramatic style. While the first season was more cheerful and straight forward, ~RMM~ focuses more on deciding who it is that you care for and who it is that you truly love. Fans of the first season will not be let down as the story and fresh appearance of ~RMM~ brings new life to the series.

Graphics

At this point in time, the first season of To Heart is beginning to show it's age. To Heart's artwork is of the early ninety's style and is completely hand drawn. The characters have a bit of a bulgy style in a sense, but it is not so exaggerated to where you can not enjoy the series. While the older artwork lacks the polish of modern anime, it is still cute and attractive in it's own right. The background are also well placed for the first season and they blend nicely with the characters. A little more liveliness in the backgrounds would have been nice tho.

For ~RMM~, the artwork is really brought to life. With modern animation techniques and style, the characters are much more solid and smoother, yet they still retain the cuteness that they had from the original series. Eyeshine is greatly enhanced and the entire character cast is polished up nicely. The background received little enhancement from the original series but the colors are much more vibrant and a it seems that more effort was put into their design and placement.

For the series as a whole, it is impressive to see how much art style can improve with the tide of time. To Heart comes across this barrier quite impressively.

Sound

The soundwork in both series is well enough but not enough to really stand out. Both series had well placed voicing but I sometimes found Hiroyuki's grumbling to be rather harsh and annoying at times, more noticably in the second season than the first. Both series have well placed and toned intro and ending themes but I found myself more attatched to ~RMM~'s intro, "Into Your Heart" more than any of the others. The series is occupied by well toned background music for select scenes and at no time does the music seem harsh.

Fun

The overall execution of To Heart was done fairly well for it's genre and the series now serves as a staple for other series of the same. While the first season is now well dated, it is still an excellent series for any romance fan. The artwork was executed fairly well for it's time but the "bulgy" style had my eye quirked at some points. The second season fixed this problem quite well tho. The full blend of cute music and attractive artwork functioned well together with the life-style drama of the anime. As stated before, this anime is a little slower than the traditional series but the simplicity only adds to the series charm. The only thing I'd really like to see from To Heart would be a definite closure. The ending gives off hints in a suggestive manner, but they never really solidify it. The characters simply seem to move from one stage of life to the next. While this is befitting to the life-style genre, it may lead some audiences to want more when the series has finally ended.
