Air

Air tv,game Review

When he was young, Yukito Kunisaki's mother told him of a winged girl in the sky. Yukito's family has been searching for this girl for generations. Finally, Yukito's journey takes him to a small seaside town where he meets Misuzu Kamio, a girl who is eager to make friends with Yukito. Yukito ends up staying with Misuzu and her mother, Haruka, while he searches for the girl in the sky. In the town, however, there are strange occurences, and as the days pass by, Misuzu starts to have strange dreams.
What is the truth behind Misuzu's dreams and her failing health? And how is everything connected to Yukito and his journey?

The manga adapted from the game is illustrated by Yukimaru Katsura.

Story & Playability

Air is a lively story of love, drama, and determination. The story at first is difficult to grasp but upon a second viewing, all of the points play out rather nicely for viewers. The story seems to a bit of a revitalization of Kanon, an anime that was released by the same studio before Air. Air flows nicely from one episode to the other without hesitation. At the 'Summer Arc' portion of the series, some viewers may find themselves puzzled at first, but they soon discover that this is a flashback to tell the origin of the story. Immediately after the 'Summer Arc', the finale of the series comes to a climatic and superb ending that will leave even the hardest of viewers in tears. From introduction to conclusion, Air holds a fantastic story and executes it superbly.

Something to note, is the final episode (12) is basically a recap of the entire series taken from another point of view. This note is provided to give potential viewers an insight of what to expect.

Graphics

The artwork in Air is very sharp but it does not give off a sense of harshness. Instead, characters are portrayed with a sense of gentleness and gratitude. The appearance of recycling scenes is relatively nill as every frame seems to be fresh with life. The shading of clothing as well as detail of small things like ribbons, hair, and eye shine are all pulled off with a great touch. The background of the series are all given off with a wonderous light and shine to them. Scenery plays a large part in Air and the artists do a wonderful job of displaying it. One will have trouble not watching Air without a sense of awe and recognition for the efforts of the studio.

Sound

The music in Air is one that is great worthy mention. The intro "Tori no Uta" / "Song of The Bird" is very lively song that will give a listener a smile while at the same time, providing lyrics that are soulful and justifiable for the series. It is by far one of my more favorite intro themes.

The background music to Air is also outstanding with soft pieces such as "Natsukage" / "Summer Lights" giving off a sense of wonder and relaxation. Every theme in the Air OST seems to have a befitting setting in the anime that is easily indentified.

The ending theme "Farewll Song" is a lively tune that concludes every viewing with a sense of hope and a greater aspect on things to come. The lyrics are somewhat relative to the anime itself, but that is not the songs strong point.

The song most notable in Air would have to be "Aozora" / "Blue Sky" as it is one of the most heart-wrenching songs you will ever hear from an anime. The depressing tone and tear-jerking lyrics are a fatal blend that will bring even the most emotionless viewers to sniffles. When viewing the anime, you will know when this song begins to play as it must be one of the most depressing moments in anime history. "Aozora" / "Blue Sky" easily gets a vote as one of the most depressing anime songs ever and an excellent addition to an already outstanding soundtrack.

Fun

The enjoyable factor of Air is one that is hard to match in most aspects. The animation is lively and attractive, the music is meaningful and pleasant, and the story is one of originality. Perhaps the primary fault of the the presentation of the anime is sudden sidetrack into the 'Summer Arc' of the story. It happens rather abruptly without much of a forwarning that could leave most viewers puzzled and wondering if they're still watching the same series or not. Another minor fault is that some of the characters seem to play a minor role in the standings. Kano and Mayuki seem like they would provide a meaningful existence for the conclusion of the anime, however they simply seem to disappear as the anime reaches it's conclusion. This gives off the impression that they served no primary purpose to begin with. I find this rather hard to grasp but I've yet to tie up all the lose ends. Had the studio provide a more rounded attempt at integrating all the characters, then perhaps it would have made a better impression. Still, Air is one anime that should be noticed as a must-see for anime viewers.

Very good review of maybe one of the best anime series of all time. You fail to mention the lack of continuity in the later episodes that, as I have read somewhere else, is because of the few number of episodes available. A big chunk of the story seems to be missing. This, though, does nothing to lessen the massive psychological blow of the last episodes. Not that it wasn't a bit obvious from the begining (even the show's opening!). I just did not think they would go this far with the scenario, or this good. Great show.

And yes, I cried. Actually, it will be a strange day when I hear Aozora and do not cry.... Two thumbs up.

Well...I didn't cry when I watch all the episodes...
Maybe it's because I have too high expection or I simply don't really like Romance or so...
I just found that there is nearly no contiuouity between episodes..The part for Kanon is a bit boring and seems not really relating...The part for Michiru is better but still, I think if the plot focused on Misuzu will be the best.
All in all, I think "KANON" is a better series comparing with AIR.

Air. Air is a good thing. Air allows us to breathe and is the most important element needed to sustain life. The word air has a variety of meanings. Ask a room full of people what first thing that comes to mind is when they hear the word air and you’ll get responses ranging from the sky to an invisible force which surrounds us that we can't see or touch. An Otaku might say, “Air is also incredibly good Anime”, and they’d be right.

Yet to be released in the United States, Air tells the story of a poor wandering, pretty boy puppeteer named Yukito who enters a strange seaside town in the pursuit of earning enough money to buy himself a meal. Armed only with a small cloth doll in the shape of a bear with wings and a red cap whom responds to his mental commands, Yukito stumbles upon Misuzu Kamino an eccentric young girl who has an obsession with dinosaurs but no friends. She also has a secret; a debilitating illness which could be the cause of her loneliness. It’s either that, or an ancient curse. Misuzu just started her summer vacation when she found Yukito asleep by the sea on her way to her morning summer classes. There was an instant connection between the two, drawn together by their crushing sense of loneliness, and the same dream of a winged girl who lives in the sky, sad and alone. They both wish to someday find that girl and set her free only to discover that the winged girl is a part of them both.

As Yukito becomes entwined with Misuzu he’s introduced to the other citizens of this sad town, each detached from reality. The first part of the show deals with Misuzu's classmate, Kana, a bright eyed chipper girl who thinks she can talk to her dog Potato. She also wears a bright yellow ribbon on her wrist believing that she has to wear it so she’ll be able to do magic as an adult. She too is familiar with the winged girl in the sky and she too wishes to visit her. For to her, the winged woman is her mother.

Next, Yukito stumbles upon Minagi and Michiru. Two girls so close I thought they were sisters. This tale is so weird I’d hate to ruin the surprise any further, except to say that to Minagi that same winged girl who lives a lonely life in the sky has tattered feathers; a far more depressing and drab version then that shared by the previous characters.

The show bounces back to Yukito’s tale, and finally after taking a voyage to feudal Japan do we hear Misuzu's story. It’s at this point that you find out that Air’s main story really revolves around Misuzu, as told from the point of view of the crow she befriends the day she meets Yukito.

This being fine anime, and not some empty shallow cartoon, there’s another whole layer to this story. Air is more then just a tale about two lost souls meeting in the night. It’s, when all the mini-stories are combined that we realize that the show is about dreams and the thin line between fiction and reality. It's also about growing up and learning to accept reality for what it is, and that we need to let go of the dreams and delusions we wrap ourselves in to shelter ourselves from the pains of life.

Air shows that Dreams are needed to live our lives, but to live in a world of dreams is like flying through the sky. There is nothing there to support or sustain them, so eventually they will vanish and everything will tumble to the Earth.

AIR is one of the best animes i've ever seen. the way it's drawn how the story develops is very catchy in my opinion! AIR is just beautyful to look at and Nismosis' review reflects my opinion about this anime to 100%.

i think Air is better than Kanon, 'cause the message it's more clear...

  11. sakuralittlekitty Nov 15, 2005

I actually was kind of upset when I first saw the ending.
I was like, "what the hell?"
Of course I cried... but I had to watch the last episode a
2nd time in order to get it. I really liked the series, and
was quite happy that it wasn't one of those series that takes
forever to finish (i.e. Inu-Yasha...) gao.

WOOOOOOOOOOO! AIR! ncie review! but i think the plot should be rated less...i mean everyone in the story has metal problems!

  13. RealityEX Dec 02, 2005

I was just WAY too confused after finishing Air for it to have a psychological impact on me. Somehow, I just couldn't piece all the episodes together especially after Yukito disappeared in episode 10. Then as things concluded with Misuzu's illness and all, I was like, "Okay...what was the whole point. I don't get the way the things are suppose to turn out here." Meh, I got totally lost in the 2nd half of the series.

  14. darkangelcrisis Dec 07, 2005

actually, the series really doesn't have flaws. The two characters that were like side fillers weren't really. The main character here wasn't misuzu or Yukito at all. It was really the girl in the sky. Through all the characters and the plot you saw the purpose of the girl in the sky. The story has a really complicated plot, but the end makes it so you can think more on it and make more conclusions.. This was a great review.

I love this review its so well put I absolutely loved this series and you did it justice bravo ^^

When I first watched this serie ,I was realy moved. It's only a simple story. There is no strong feeling in it.Evering is quiet ,but it give me a great review.I will never forget the love showed on this serie.

Air is definately one of the best anime's i've seen.
i liked the plot but didn't like the character's as much. i was really confused with the ending.... i never understood how the girl in the sky was saved (if she was even saved at all). it seemed to me that the 2 children playing on the beach at the end were reincarnations of misuzu/ girl in sky and yukito. but i'm not sure. also i don't really understand why yukito died.... i know he was reincarnated into a crow but why did he have to die in the first place.
some character's did seem like they have no meaningfull existance to the conclusion. It's true that they didnt contribute anything to misuzu directly. However, if you think about it they made contributions in changing yukito's personality and actions which in turn contributed to the final conclusion.

all in all i was VERY pleased with the anime. the conclusion was at first a bit anguishing but so heart felt that it didnt last long before i was in tears. this has got to be the saddest animé i've ever watched.
