Brave King GaoGaiGar tv Review

Story & Characters

GaoGaiGar was released in 1997 and then it was set so that the events of GaoGaiGar were in near future. Actually in year 2005.
GaoGaiGar begins when a mecha space lion Galeon comes to visit Earth and brings a baby boy to a couple who have been trying to get a child. Six years later Galeons returns at the same time the first Zonder attacks the Earth. Galeon causes a small disaster as he/she/it crashes with a space shuttle, injuring Shishou Guy.
When Galeon finally lands on Earth, bringing Guy with him/her/it. Galeon also provides mankind with alien technology that saves the life of Guy, changing him into a Cyborg Guy, who can execute 'Fusion' with Galeon to create GaiGar, a combonation of Guy and Galeon. At the same time a secret government organisation GGG (Gutsy Geoid Guard) was formed. Two years later a boy named Mamoru meets with another Zonder, who begin to attack the city near by. Galeon and Guy began to fight the Zondar as GaiGar, but their Fusion seems to be too powerless against the enemy. GaiGar needs to 'FinalFusion' with GaoMachines to create the King of Braves, GaoGaiGar. The boss in GGG, Taiga Koutaro gives the access to Final Fuse.
Final Fusion has never succeeded, but as the brave ones can make anything work.

That was a small synopsis of the first episode in 49-episode long GaoGaiGar.
The last in the Brave-series, GaoGaiGar has superb animation compared to the older Brave-animations.

GaoGaiGar is an angst-free zone. All the heroes are in the words finest meaning; they rescue will those who need help.
All characters have their own kind of cheerfulness, as an old scientist flies with his rocket boots and the boss has never ending quest for better abs. The show may seem to be childish as it should. This show was ment for the kids and it succeeds in it well. Some of the weapons seems like toys themselves; the Dividing Driver is a giant-sized screwdriver and the Goldion Hammer is a replica of a toy hammer, except it has a mass of a black hole and it's really makes things dust.

Still, the plot in GaoGaiGar is in it's own level. After the dark and angsty times of Evangelion Japan needed a new hero to cheer people. GaoGaiGar answered the call, bringing a better plot than Evangelion.
Compared to EVA's sleek desing, robots in GaoGaiGar are more massive and bulky, in a good way. Every attack has a massive effect in the surroundings and the final blows are like explosions from Hell.

This is a show that really tells you to shove the angst, stop reasoning too much and generally tells you that it's OK to be a kid.
In a good way.

All this make GaoGaiGar a great show, but as always, one must see it to understand what the show is all about.

Art

The Art in GaoGaiGar brings all good and bad mecha desing together.
GaoGaiGar looks cool in his own, strong way, but some other mechas seem to be lacking that something.
The use of black may be a excessive, but it works.

The character desing may not be the best you'd want to see, but it does the work and after some time, they looks sleek, cool and generally speaking perfect. Much like it's sister series Betterman, the character desing resemblence true anime.

The color of gold seems to be the symbol of courage, as Guy's armor is gold and white in it's colors and most of the notable ogjects seem to be gold as well.

Sound

The music get the job done and the intro theme gets into your brain so well, that you'll be singing "GaGaGaGaGa..." long after you have stopped listening that darn mp3.

The voice acting goes a bit overboard, as Swan White's accent seems to be little of a joke.
but voice acting overall is great.

GaoGaiGar's OST is a simple matter: the music are in there, but it really does not have a signle track that would rise any greater interest, except the intro.

Rating: 7

Presentation

You can really enjoy this anime.
It has robots, aliens, transforming robots, good animation, transforming ninjarobots and some of the most cool looking mecha desing ever seen.
