Plot Synopsis

8 volume manga (1998-2004), Daisuke Moriyama 24 TV episodes, Gonzo (2004) Brooklyn, 1924. The prosperity of the decade has summoned the darker forces of nature to rise from their sleep and back to the surface of the world. The Order of Magdala, a religious military organization, has developed special weaponry and trained forces of nuns and priests to battle this evil. Follow Rosette Christopher, a young rambunctious exorcist, and her partner Chrno, a hornless demon, as they wade through hordes of monsters and demons, fighting evil and risking life and limb. Not to mention excessive damage to real estate.

Story & Characters

Chrno Crusade is set in 1928 & follows the story of Sister Rosette, a hotheaded 16 year old girl with a bull-in-a-china-shop approach to life & her partner, a sweet, young (looking) demon with a dark past, Chrno, who are bound by alchemy.
Together they work for the Magdalene order, an organisation of exorcists.
But the motivation to join the Magdalene order was to search for Rosette's brother who was kidnapped by Aion, an important person from Chrno's past, when she was 12.
It may sound strange with so few details, but CC is a very exciting story & as about as original as they come. And as far-fetched as it may sound, when you see it it all makes perfect sense. But I do suggest that you read the Manga first as some important points were left out of the anime, so it doesn't make sense in some places.
CC is a story full of Demons, action, humour & angst & is unique in many ways, so if your looking for something different than your average everyday anime, be sure to check it out.

Art

Some of the best art I have ever seen, with attentin to detail put into every scene with virtually no imperfect points.
The art is errie & dark that gives off a sense of foreboding & matches the mood perfectly. But it can easily change to a bright & vibrant style whenever needed..
The character designs match the characters personalities perfectly, especially the devils.
In short, the art is one of the Anime's best points. Though GONZO seems to have jumped on the band-wagon with the enlargement of Satella & Rosette's busts, which is a shame considering how good the original Manga art was.

Sound

The other best point would be the music.
The opening theme 'Tsubasa wa pleasure line' is an upbeat tune that easily gets stuck in your head. In contrast with its fast opening, the end song 'Sayonara solitaire' is a slow & beautiful song that also gets stuck in your head easily.
These are the two songs that got me hooked on J-Pop.
And just to make things even better, the BG music is the best I've ever heard & it really adds to the eerie feel of CC.
As for voice actors, I must admit I think the English voice actors are better suited than the Japanese ones. The English Voice actors seemed to put more feeling into their speech even if Hilary Haag's voice is annoying & Satella's accent is a little hard to understand, but hey what are subtitles for?

Presentation

I don't think you'd ever find a story more original than CC, how Daisuke Moriyama thought it up is a mystery to me. In fact, how it differentiates to other Animes in one of its best points.
And humour? CC can be hilarious at times depending on your sense of humour. Some jokes may be a little sick, especially if they concern Elder, but even Elders pervertedness can be funny. And never fear, even after a string of serious episodes there is always an insanely silly one to re-lighten the mood. This is a fun anime to watch that puts you through a truck load of emotions especially as the story progresses. And as much as I hate to admit it I have cried a fair few times, but not just in sadness, somethings are so funny I've just sat there & laughed so hard that I've cried a fair few times aswell.
Overall, I suggest Chrno Crusade to someone who wants something different with a little graphic horror, romance, humour, can stand suspense & won't mind continuing or starting with the Manga to make things that little bit clearer.

Nice review Animanga! I've never watched Chrno Crusade, although I can watch the first episode whenever I want :D ..anyways nice review you use good descriptions "bull-in-a-china-shop" approach to life? I would never of thought to use that ^-^ Good job, My rating for your review: "9!"

Nice review! I say you portrayed that very well, Chrono Crusade rocks!! I really can't wait till the next manga comes out, then only one more left after that! Awwww man, oh well it's still an awesome series!

Well, people base their so called "original" anime series on their dreams. Just like Rumiko Takeshi did. It was pretty odd to come up with InuYasha like that
Nice review^.^

nice, you really no what yer talkin about

super.............

superrrrrr..................................................

Evene when I don't liked (as I posted in other "cc" reviews), I think the sound too a lot of rating from you.
The best is the OP, but the rest is awful. The rest is not so good, but, original, it is (bit ite reminded me like a...NGEvangenlion).
BYE

I really like the CC manga, but I've heard that the anime doesn't follow its story at all. That they simplified it into "nuns-with-guns" and skipped all the interesting aspects about loneliness, sacrifice, time, and so on.

Great review for CC. Having watched both manga and anime, I've to agree with you on most of the points you made. However, from a personal view, I'm a little disappointed after watching the anime. Just like what DanVoltsgalph heard, the story did get simplified... and I think a lot of important, and meaningful aspects of the story have been left out. To me, the story only worth a 4 after reading the manga. >_<

good anime

I love this anime very much~! And I really love Chrno~! He is so cute!

I think the last paragraph of the story and character bit is duplicated? ^^;;;
But I do agree with most of the points you have made (however, I'd probably have given a little more for the story and character).
Perhaps it's because I didn't read the manga, but I didn't get the ending of it...it was a bit of a let down...after reading this review, I think I should go read the manga to see what I've missed.

This's best anime.I love it.

i love it too but i just hate anime like it (invovles w/ ending) yeah i dont like anime like saikano *no offence* But i really loved this anime until someone told me the ending =-= its horrible!

Chrono Crusade is great anime. I loved the characters, animation, sound, the presentation and most of the story. I didn't like the why the story ended at all.

It was there but it was all sort of implied, not really talked about. The whole show is a huge metaphor and its so deep that i feel like not everyone truly understands it.

Nice review. I don't agree with you on the sound quality, i didn'r really like the music.

I recently started watching this anime. episode 1 was good, but by episode 2, i was in love with this anime.

And I ABSOULUTELY LOVE CHRONO! He's sooooooooo CUTE!^_^ *_~

I really like this anime. The ending was sad but wonderful at the same time. But.. after a while, Rosette's constant hysteria get quite annoying. Even more so when Azmaria(sp?) adopts this same behavior.
