Upon her arrival she discovers the Himuro mansion to be possessed by the vengeful spirits of the dead; pleading children, lost souls, and murderous ghosts walk the manor, and all who enter become cursed by the “Rope Maiden.” Armed with her sixth sense and a mysterious Camera Obscura that photographs the supernatural, Miku must unravel the mystery of the manor in order to rescue her brother and leave the grounds alive.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

While visiting the woods where they used to play as children, twins Mio and Mayu Amakura find themselves drawn in to the haunted All God’s Village. Tormented souls roam the village and the voice of a girl’s insane laughter fills the air as the twins search for a way out. As Mio you battle the ghosts with the Camera Obscura, keeping an eye out for your sister as crimson butterflies lure her further in to the nightmarish village. Escape is their only chance of survival, and the further they delve in to the night the closer they draw to the “ritual”, and they begin to uncover the horrifying truth about the village… and its twins.

Fatal Frame III: The Tormented

After a tragic accident that claims her fiancé’s life, Rei Kurosawa tries to move on. Pursuing her love of photography, she visits locations of claimed haunting… until she begins dreaming of one. One night she is drawn in to a mansion in pursuit of her deceased lover, and in the dream she is touched by an angry spirit that burns a tattoo in to her body. Though the nightmare was horrifying enough, the worst comes in the realization that the tattoo remains… after she has woken up. Night after night she dreams of the haunted mansion, and every morning the tattoo spreads further. In sleep she wanders the manor with the Camera Obscura for protection, and during the day dreams and reality begin to bleed in to one another. In order to escape the curse of the Manor of Sleep, Rei must delve further in to her dreams and unearth the manor’s sorrowful past, before she- or others that have been pulled in to the nightmare- are claimed.

Story & Characters

Summed up in one word easily, either "freaky" or "scary." This guys that made this game sure went overboard when they wanted to freak the living sh*t out of survival-horror gamers.

Here's a synopsis; a pair of twins, Mio and Mayu, wonder into a forest they used to play in, when Mayu chases a crimson butterfly into a village shrouded in a dark cloud. This village, called the "All God's Village," along with its inhabitants, were a sort of guardians to a place called "The Hellish Abyss," which was rumored to be the gateway to hell. In this village, twins were born periodically. After a certain amount of time, these twins were sacrificed to appease the Hellish Abyss. Additionally, outsiders were also sacrificed, along with anyone who looked at the Hellish Abyss. These people were called "Mourners," and had their eyes sown shut, since all who looked at the Hellish Abyss became insane. The one of the twins, the elder, strangled the other to death during the Crimson Sacrifice Ceremony. (During the time before the village fell, the elder twin was the one that was born second, since it was considered that the elder always allows the younger to go first; nowadays, the first is the elder; Mio is the younger in the old law, older in the new law.) The mark remaining after the elder strangled the younger became a crimson butterfly, its new reincarnation. Because of the suffering of both (emotional to one, physical to another) appeased the Hellish Abyss, it was resealed. However, if this failed, the Hellish Abyss would eventually open and annihilate the village, and slowly consume the world. This is just part of the story, play the game to get the rest.

Quite original...

Art

OH GOD! SAVE ME!

These visuals are so detailed, it makes the game scarier than it already it. The graphics itself is psuedo 3-D anime, similar Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. This is good or bad, depending on how you look at it (good because its scary, bad because of that). What's scarier is that a camera is the main weapon, so its first-person perspective when fighting (except when running and avoiding, which is third-person). For this reason alone makes this game scarier than the Silent Hill series, since you can at least fight in third-person in those games; this also makes you see the spirits up close and personal. Additionally, everything is draped in a black shroud, adding to the creep value.

Also, whenever you take a picture of Mayu (you play as Mio), her picture becomes increasingly distorted as the spirits of the village take her soul away, similar to the Ring.

Very scary...

Sound

All the additional sounds added will make one paranoid of creeking sounds and small sounds. There is just so much extra sound put into this that it effectively adds to the freak level of the art. The music doesn't help either. Also, a couple of enemies make sounds (moans or cackling) that just makes you wish you had a couple of ghostbuster guns/anti-ghost ballistic missiles to beat the spirits' @$$es to the deepest level of Hell. But no such luck, as the camera is the ONLY weapon (although the player can upgrade it with some abilities).

Presentation

Originality
This game is highly original, as well as its prequal of sorts, are extremely original. With an extremely strange weapon, scary visuals and story to boot. The idea of twins being used as a sacrifice to prevent the end of the world from the gate to Hell is grand. Additionally, the visuals go in your head, and never leave for at least a month.

Overall
Put short, the creaters made the perfect game to scare the living sh*t out of anyone. There are several difficulty levels, although, even the easy difficulty is fairly hard (with the toughest being "experts only," literally). The game is similar to merging the Ring with Silent Hill (any of the games, number four being preferable) with the setting in a feudal Japan village. For people that say they are afraid of nothing, use game will sure test them to the limit. All under the cover of an extremely unique plot.

Make no mistake, for if you do, you die.

The Hellish Abyss has opened, the All God's Village has been annihilated, a maniacal spirit wants her older sister to kill her, Mayu keeps disappering, Mio fights a pair of evil-possessed dolls, several spirits, and lots more.

Nice review, I have to admit, the character development is weak, the storyline, over all, is not.
