Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children tv Review

Two years after the defeat of Sephiroth by Cloud and his gang, a new danger reappears. This danger is Kadaj. He and his two brothers are out to get the cells of Jenova in order to bring back Sephiroth. Cloud, in order to stop it, must pick up the sword once again and join in the fight. With the help of the Turks and the former President of ShinRa, and his fellow friends, Cloud must prevent this danger and save Midgar and the world once again.

Story & Characters

Well this is about the OVA: The Last Order that came with Advent Children. So don't expect an Advent Children review, but the Last Order as there is no section for it.

The final order of the turks, before the Final Fantasy 7 began. The story to catch Cloud and Zack as they're running away. Zack, brings the mindless Cloud to Midgar, as he hopes to free both of them from the experiments they were forced to be for Shin-Ra. Flashback are seen to what happened at Nibelhiem, the last mission before Sephiroth went insane and destroyed the village. Then.... what the event that brought Cloud back to this world...

If you saw the OVA by itself, it would be a wonderful action, but you wouldn't understand the story behind it either. You would need to play the game, and the cell phone game, Before Crisis to know who the Turks would be, as many characters are shown that weren't in the game at all. However, some fans may dislike the OVA as many parts were changed, such as what happened to Sephiroth at Nibelhiem. Overall it was interesting and the action was well done.

Art

For the animation to be done by MAD-House, it was quite smooth and clear. The CG was over used at some points, but fit in most parts. There were no dragging or reused scenes, and the character designs were nice.

Emotions were well drawn on the characters, and the views as well. However, Tifa looked much looker than I would have expected. She was supposed to be 16 or 17 right? She looked around to be 18 - 20. Yet, the lifeless looks in Cloud's eyes was very well-done, and really made him seem like a doll.

Sound

The music was lively and well used, however most of the tunes were from the game, yet remixed. The One-Winged-Angel was done in a rock ballad or some sort, which made it much better than the usual tune.

The music tend to lean towards rock, which fitted perfectly with the action scenes and dramatic moments as well. However, there were moments when silence would be hear to see the moment of reaction from the characters which I thought was very well done. Sometimes it is best when nothing is played.

Presentation

I would highly recommend this OVA for those who played the games, however the only way to get it is fansub or buy the limited DVD, but I wouldn't say that the OVA is worth that much. It was quite enjoy to see it, however I would have loved to see everyone in an animation form. However, if you didn't play the games, you wouldn't understand any part of the OVa or enjoy it as much, since you're are just thrown into the action without any introducion. You have to know some part of the characters' background or you'll wonder why is that so important, or why was that person so well-respected by others.

It was indeed funny to see how normal soldiers wouldn't stand up to SOLDIERS in 1st class, and the riviality with soldiers and the Turks. Those were the only few light hearted moments.

However, this 30 min. OVA was just too short to watch, and ends at an unusual spot, which leaves you thirsting for more, and in this case it's not played well. A longer series, or at least a long time frame would have been best. Or maybe even a different form of animation for a different part of the story? Who knows what they'll come out with next... maybe an anime for Final Fantasy 8?

Some of the details as they developed in the story were a little predictable.
Oh, and Cloud was never in soldier to begin with. But Barret once commented that he managed to surpass all soldiers.

Of course they were predictable if you played the game... however some details were changed.

    in the game, she's 20. since it's 2 years later, she'd be 22, so the art's accurate.

During that mission? I don't think so. During the game yes she was 20, but this was before the game.
