City Hunter

City Hunter tv Review

Story & Characters

City Hunter is about a guy named Ryo Saeba and his partner Kaori Makimura. Together they make up "City Hunter" an organization that can be hired to do things like body guarding and finding lost people etc...

Along the way, we also explore Ryo's past, and meet many of his friends, enemies, and ex-partners. Umibozu is Ryo's best friend and rival, and they fight almost as much as they work together. Saeko is a lady cop who often cons City Hunter into doing her police business for her. There are also a lot of characters that only appear for one or two shows, and some that only appear occasionally.

The show is pretty much episodic, and the originality comes from the characters. Ryo can change from and ecchi pervert to a ace fighting hero within seconds. Kaori usually acts like a bossy tomboy, but really she is one of the nicest people in all of anime.

There is a lot of action in the show, but there is romance and comedy as well. It's always good for a laugh but some people might find it a bit repetitious, since they are always doing the same kinds of stories.

Art

City Hunter is from the late eighties to the early nineties, so the animation is quite old. The colours are very flat and there usually isn't a lot of details. But every once in a while there is a detailed shot of a gun or something, and the Openings and Closings are generally better done that the show itself.

In the last two series, freeze frames are used a lot, and limited animation is also used sometimes. But the last two series also have slightly more modern animation as well.

The character designs have a very eighties look to them, and they are not as attractive as the standard "anime style". But the strength of the actual characters make up for this.

Sound

Again, because City Hunter is from the late eighties to the early nineties, a lot of the music is quite outdated. It is mostly J-pop, with a few ballads here and there. Many of the songs are very cheesy, and are almost imposible to listen to today.

The voice acting is very good. The voices all fit the characters, and the guy who plays Ryo Saeba is excellent. His voice matches the characters crazy mood swings with no problems. There is no english dub on the TV series, though the specials/OVAs/Movie have yucky dubs.

Presentation

A lot of the humour in City Hunter is quite ecchi, and it's funny when you like that sort of thing. Another source of humour is Kaori and her magic hammer. She hits Ryo whenever he gets too perverted. Sometimes Ryo even dresses up in drag or hits on men, but usually Kaori only comes after him when he tries to flirt or feel up a woman. There are also jokes about Umibozu, who is some what shy and old fashioned with women.

The show might seem a little repetitive to some, but the humour seems fresh to the show. It is similar to Lupin III in some ways, but with more drama and romance. There are some episodes that are almost pure action or romance as well, so it varies.

The DVDs are from ADV, and you cannot get them separately. Each series comes in a boxed set, with the first two series split between 2 sets each, and the last two series coming in one box each. The artwork is ugly, and doesn't really look like the characters, but the boxes are quite sturdy and made out of plastic. They are OK sets, but they could be better.

You hitthe mark, buteven with it repetitivness but it's always fun to watch it,
the series is less explicit (I mean less-ecchi) than the manga ,personaly I saw the series first
and foun it annoying but when i reading the manga it feelt quiet well (I'm astonished of the drawing quality of a 80's manga)

I watch the manga, and to me his work is good considering publish in 80s. He is the best that time. I'm following his latest work on Angel heart now. Can be said as the continiuning stories from what leftovere in City Hunter. quite impressive.
