Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball tv Review

Dragon Ball is a 42 volume manga by Akira Toriyama that ran from 1984 to 1995.
The story follows Son Goku in a tale reminiscent of the 16th-century Chinese legend Journey to the West.
Beginning with Goku as a child, the story traces his life all the way to him becoming a grandfather.

Dragon Ball is about the warrior Saiyan race, the defense of Earth, and the search for the Dragon Balls that will allow
any wish to be granted for the person who can gather all seven.

Dragon Ball Z is the second portion of the anime and follows Goku's adult life, later edited and remastered into Dragon Ball Kai.
Dragon Ball GT follows Dragon Ball Z and is not based on the manga.

Note: The characters' Super Saiyan transformations are listed under their respective character's tag.

Story & Characters

DBZ storyline was and still great for me. I liked how Vegeta, Piccolo and Fat Majin Buu who were enemies for Goku, became his nearest friends. I was hopping if they told us more about Brolly who is the Legendary of the Super Saiyan Jin and Bardouk, Goku's father because we didn't know their entire story. I adored Goku's personality because he was making a balance between humor and becoming very serious in some situations. Of course Vegeta, the highly pride prince, had an awesome personality as well and he was Goku's rival and friend at the same time till the end. Maybe the only problem with DBZ storyline is that the main characters last for many episodes fighting only one enemy.
The fighting style was developing episode after episod; from the first episode fighting Raditz till it reaches climax stage fighting against Buu which was the best stage on the series. I liked Gohan who had hidden powers inside him and how he developed himself and became SSJ 2 for the first time against Cell till he trained in the upper holy region to awake his truly hidden powers and was called "Mystic Gohan".
As for SSJ Gogeta who is the fusion of Goku and Vegeta "Using fusion dance" has shown up only on DBZ movie 12 and he fought against Janiba. Gotenks who is the fusion of Trunks and Goten "Using fusion dance" didn't appear a lot in DBZ but his episodes were awesome. Vegito who is the fusion of Goku and Vegeta "Using earrings" is the ultimate Saiyan-Jin warrior in DBZ and he fought against super Buu. The most unique things in DBZ story is power levels which starting from level 1 till level 3 and fusion dance, they are very nice and that’s what make DBZ has a special story.

Art

DBZ characters look awesome and attractive. I like the way of how they drew them. In addition, I like their faces expressions when they reach their ultimate rage and body muscles are perfect. As for the blowing effects and when they are using their skills like: KaMeHaMeHa, Final Flash, Big Bang Attack and so on, it look very good on how they presented them, no single objection on that. Backgrounds look nice too, the way of drawing cities, forests, houses, mountains and so, I like when everything around the characters are destroying because of their powers. Moreover, I like water effects or the earth effects when one of the characters is standing above a sea or a ground and he is charging himself, cool effects, if it's a ground, you can see cracks on grounds and you can feel the whole earth is shaking by just looking at visuals things which are presented.

Sound

Audio effects are cool, especially if it was in Japanese. I like the characters sounds and I couldn't believe that the person who performed Goku, Gohan, Goten and Bardouk voice in Japanese was one person and she was a female, that's awesome for sure and how she could screamed that much when she performed their roles and the English version was not bad at all. As for Music's and themes for the Japanese version, they was nice and very calmly. However, English version was very harasser and noisy, I didn't like it a lot.

Presentation

In general, DBZ is a very nice and great anime. It's advisable to watch DBZ in Japanese because for me, it's 180 degree different from English version. All genres that you can think about are available in DBZ. If you want humor, there are humor scenes in DBZ and if you want action, there are action scenes in DBZ and if you want adventures, there are adventures in DBZ but of course there is no horror scenes In DBZ. It's nice that there are no perverted scenes in DBZ which allow you to watch it even with your small siblings, for example. If you want to make someone like DBZ, let him/her watch the 13 movies of DBZ, they are awesome and have very nice stories.
You will love all DBZ characters for sure if you watch the anime because you will live with them about 273 episodes for English version and 291 episodes for Japanese version. I don't think there is a difference between watching DBZ in TV or in PC and I don't suggest buying DBZ DVDs because you will waste your money because the whole series is available on the internet and for free and you know that recently there are a DVD quality episodes releases on the internet, so I think it's better. I didn't find an anime which has these nice features that DBZ has. It's really that Dragon Ball Z is a masterpiece from 19 century and it's a proud work made by Akira Toriyama.
Nowadays, it's hard to find an anime similar to DBZ. Dragon Ball Z has a special taste and you will not find it in any other anime. I want to write more about how great and interesting is DBZ but it will take pages and pages to express my true feeling towards this anime. If I were you, I would watch DBZ from the first second of episode one till the last second of the final episode.

Final Verdict

(Correction to the above statement, being opened to the vacuum of space would be for only a few minutes at most, although the UV radiation, extreme ambient heat, and other stuff would befall the Dragonball anime world with impunity.)

I like your review. I have seen DBZ, but not the Japanese version.
Maybe I will have to try to watch it in Japanese when I get the chance.
Your rating are fine because it is more of a review of the Japanese version, which you mentuion is better than the English version.
If the review was for the English version, I like the rating overall would be like 7.
    Later.

    I like this animation most.

  23. VietBlueBoy Dec 18, 2005

Your review is great, the anime really deserve it all. Back in the day, I know everyone at my school watched it as soon as it shows. It's one title that they will remember forever. They could have taken it more slowly, by improving the animation for some of the episodes though. Regardless though it's the greatest anime that debuted for TV. If you seen it all already, you could still get the "ultimate uncuts". Also the "lost episodes" for GT and movies on the way. The PS2 games are still cool. There's still alot of DB left to come. Even "Naruto" won't replace this legendary anime. Please love DB until you die. Thanks for being on my side.

  24. vatican92 Dec 24, 2005

Really great review except I think it's too high.
    I think I would've gave art a little less. Around 6.
Even though it got better, the art in the first few episodes totally stunk but later like I said got much better.
Overall in my opinion is too high. Maybe around 7.5 or 8 would've been great for DBZ
