Synopsis by: Niomea
Story & Characters
The story of Samurai Champloo is really weird. It's almost backwards. There are a lot of side-tracks that are totally un-related to the story. Only 13 episodes too. The story starts off at a local resturant where some folks are causing a little trouble. Then a samurai walks in. Meanwhile another samurai watches as a man begs for his job back and finally has had enough and begins to walk foreward. While this is happening our other samurai, Mugen, is talking with a waitress. He says "I'll take those guys out for 100 dumpling, no less." At first the waitress, Fuu, objects and tries to negotiate. Back to our other Samurai now. His name is Jin and you should do well to remember it. He approaches the man, begging for his job and the heartless man he is begging to. Jin tries to persuade the man to give the villager his job back. It does'nt work and then Jin kills the Elite bodyguards surrounding then man and then he gives the villager his job back. Back to Mugen and Fuu. Fuu is about to have one of her fingers cut off and then she yells to Mugen "100 dumplings!" Then Mugen picks a fight with the men, slaying 4 out of 7 of them. He leaves the leader and 2 guards Mugen orders to bring the samurai Jin has already killed to come to Mugen and fight him. While the guards are absent Jin walks in. Mugen asks him if he's one of the samurai he's looking for and picks a fight. Then a fire starts and they are trapped. Mugen blacks out and they end up almost being executed. They are saved by Fuu. Fuu then asks them to help her find a samurai who smells of sunflowers. But Mugen and Jin can't fight each other. They comply and then they're off to find the samurai who smells of sunflowers. Several episodes with no importance later they find out where to go. Nagasaki. So then they head off that way and that is the end of the season that is out so far.

Art
The art was amazing. for some reason the artists focused mainly on the action. Blood, swords and all that jazz. It was truely very nice. Like Cowboy Bebop but kicked u a notch or 2. My favorite parts about the art I'd have to say were: The unique mix of color in their world. Every single color of the rainbow is in this show. Mugen and Jin actually (combined) are 4 out of 7 colors of the rainbow: Red, Indigo, Blue and Yellow. Very unique style. Very hip and up to date so to speak. I'd definately say by the artwork Samurai Champloo is highly directed towards an audience consisting of mainly people who are atleast 14 years old or even older at that. Lots of blood. Lots of action. Lots of swearing. Lot's of animated gambling even moderate drug content.

Sound
Hip-Hop. Lots of Hip-Hop. Samurai Champloo is a very hip-hop kind of show. Lots of songs by hip-hop artists. I have'nt (unfortunately) heard the entire album but I hear it's really incredible. The songs they use match what's happening. Either no music or it's hard to hear for action scenes and then light music with no words for walking around/travelling. The opening is incredible. Really it's just great. Every line ryhmes. The ending theme is far slower. It's not hip-hop either. I'm pretty sure it's a slow J-pop song. That's the music of Champloo (Champloo means mix or to mix, that describes the story, music and art very well).

Presentation
Samurai Champloo sure is original. Nothing exactly like it. When I heard of this show I thought of Samurai Jack but I was wrong. The art is incredible. Music is almost the same. It's still a very hip-hop sort of thing. What was different was that Samurai Champloo was: Funnier, more original, far more enjoyable (Sorry, Jack), lots of swearing, blood (lots of it), a little tiny bit less action, drug content (Not much), Sexual content (pretty high if you ask me), it's pretty ecchi (I mean a woman or a few more than you think almost get naked in that show and you almost see it too)! No game for Samurai Champloo. I wish they'd make one though. Just a fighting game like Tekken 5. This series, so far for me, was the most enjoyable to watch. It's just so cool. They're very loose on what they do and say. They swear and don't care. There's tons of sword action and I love it! If I had to rate Samurai Champloo (if they make a movie out of it) I'd rate it PG-13 without thinking twice. Definately for an older audience. The humor may not have been so great but still when they made a joke it was usually pretty funny. I laughed quite a bit watching the first episode. Why? Because it's unique nature was'nt exactly what I expected. In conclusion Samurai Champloo is: A work of fiction and is not historically accurate.
