Story & Characters
The fortress of MetaLicana is under attack! The orcs army is looking after the last seal to release the demon Anthrax. The enemy is going to take the place and the only hope is to awake the defeated wizard Dark Schneider... But the solution can be more dangerous than the problem. This wizard, a perverse, violent, macho and selfish man was the leader of this army before his death... Would he fight against his old war-friends to protect Meta Licana?
Yoko is the high priest's daughter, it is up to her to release or not Dark Schneider by kissing her friend Lucie : his body is the prison of the wizard, and the only way to free him is a kiss of a virgin... How embarrassing!
Because of being lucie's friend, Yoko seems to control a little the dangerous wizard... But not much! He is as awful as he was said to be. Dark Schneider will bring hope or disaster, maybe both?
The story begins in the same way than the manga, but there are changes later, not very good modifications. Because of these (sometimes ridiculous) changes in the story the anime is a little disappointing.

Art
The Hagiwara’s style of drawing is present and it is generally a good work, but sometimes the drawing is in a way… awkward for the characters, as if the artists were in a hurry when drawing them. The style differences may shock the manga fans, main characters are often looking the same than in the manga but not always. The best example is surely Archess Ney : the dark elf face is very different, as if it was someone else… and it’s a shame for her fans. The drawing was one of the best advantages of the manga, it may be not one of the best of the anime.

Sound
Aaah the sound! The OST and the original voices are excellent! "Meta
rikaana seikishidan - shouka" : the march of Metalicana chivalry is
something! Music and voices may be the best things in the Bastard anime. Voices
are all good choices, and that is perfect to make us forget the drawing
sometimes not as good as the rest.
Japanese readers of the manga voted for the actors they would like to hear in
the anime for their favorites
characters’ voices. The result was very
close to the readers choice and it is really excellent. Background music is
enjoyable, especially during the battles, I really advise to look after the OST.

Presentation
Manga and anime are looking exactly the same in the presentation, the story
hasn’t been changed, the characters are
the same of same humour. Because there is 6 episodes, the story has been reduced
of course and not in a good way. The first episodes are quite enjoyable to
watch, particularly for bastard fans but the following is quite disappointing
because of the lack of credibility of the arrangements to the story and the
sometimes poor drawing, not as detailed as in the manga.
But the anime is still a good adaptation for the humour, it is a real pleasure
to see Dark Schneider insulting his enemies before beating them, scorning this
ease the people who see him as a saviour or hiding his true feelings behind a
strong and cruel attitude. In the same way there are enjoyable things : seeing
people of Meta Licana turning mad because of Dark
Schneider’s attitude, seeing Yoko
becoming angry and violent against Dark Schneider and making him as nice as a
dog.
Bastard isn’t the anime adaptation of
the year but because of humour, because of background music and voices it is
still enjoyable.
