Iriya no Sora UFO no Natsu tv Review

Story & Characters

When you first watch this anime, you would thought that this anime is about a war between human and aliens, and that it is centered around the battles. However, it is the completely the opposite. Up to now, the only battle you see is in the opening.
The story is mostly around a boy (named Naoyuki Asaba), a girl (named Iriya Kana), and their unusual romance.
In June 24, 1947, a war had started between the aliens and earth (also the first day when an UFO had been spotted). It is just that people don’t know about it. People have been secretly using “man made UFOs to fight this unknown war.
Iriya is one of the few pilots that controls the “man made UFOs, and Naoyuki is just a regular student who is obsess with UFOs. At the end of a summer vacation, they met at the school’s swimming pool, and the story begins.
After meeting Naoyuki, she decided to go to his school. Iriya is fearful of people since she had been alone for most of her life. It stands to reason that she doesn’t have any friends in her class other than Naoyuki. As the story goes on through their daily life, Iriya is often away due to her duty as a pilot, and around the class, there are suspicions about who she really is.
In order for Iriya to fly the UFOs, she had many alteration made to her body, including an implant of metallic spheres at both her wrist. She often has nose bleeds, and, as the story goes on, it sometimes gets more serious. It really causes Naoyuki some problems as the story advances.

The plot goes on between the protagonists and their romance. You will just have to watch it for yourself.

Art

The art work of this anime is one of the best I have seemed. The characters look great. There aren’t any body that isn’t normally proportioned, and the character design is excellent. I rather like how they drew Naoyuki. I can’t, never in a million year, draw that.
I think the best part of the animation is the background. It is just purely great in this anime. The shading of light, the colour of sky, and just almost everything looks fabulous. They fit the mood perfectly.
It really represents the era of post-war Japan which the anime is set in. Everything has an aura about it that makes it seem old and retro.
I hope that you guys will like the art work as much as I do.

Sound

There isn’t really a voice that I don’t like in this anime. The voice casting is great.
The songs are actually my favourite part of anime, especially in this one. I just love the OP and ED. I can't really say why exactly. I think it is because it connects with the mood and spirit of the anime so well.
They are both sung by Imai Chihiro.
OP: Forever Blue
ED: Himawari
However, some of the background music are weird and feels out of place sometimes. It could really be great if they could change that. Other than the out of place music, the sound of this anime is great. I would buy the soundtrack, but I really have no idea where to buy it.

Again I love it.^^

Presentation

From originality point of view, “Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu is by far within the top of my most original anime list. It is the best science fiction anime I have seemed after “Voice of a distant star. If you like a good science fictional drama, you would definitely love this anime. The complex relationship between the characters and the innocent romance is underlined by a mysterious unknown war, and it really emphasizes the preciousness of their bond. The nature of the romance between the main characters is unique by itself. They have known of each other’s feeling, but they are still keeping a distance. The curiosity of wanting to know how the romance will end is enough to keep anyone on their toes waiting for the next OVA to come out.
In many ways, this is a bit similar to “voice of a distant star. It is focused more on the interaction between the characters other than the situation at hand. The characters are a bit complex. Each has their own unique personality and sides that adds to the plot significantly. Sometime, you need to actually think about it for a moment to fully understand what is happening. I personally enjoy an anime that would make me think

If you like to think, and not just watch the mindless violence that is on a lot of anime right now. This is really a great anime

One of my Favourite OVAs so far, I really liked how they developed Iriya and Asaba's relationship (tough luck, ep.5 sent it all to hell). What's amazingly cool is whenever shes sometimes in a pinch she'll pull out that ridiculously large knife.

Hmm, review doesn't show up properly for me, the ads take a huge chunk of it o_O Oh well, it's still readable ^^

Sounds like an interesting series with a very original plot line. Took a look at some of the artwork and it is indeed very nice. Is the series licensed in English, or is it fan-subbed? Nicely written review, you've covered many important aspects of the series. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

One of the best ova i've seen for yrs. Too bad the ending wasn't dramatic enough, it didn't gave me a lasting impression, i watched it and forgot it. Some plot holes but its just an ova so i guess ill let it slide. ep.5 is probably the best episode in the series, i was at the edge of my seat watching the climax of asaba and iriya's relationship and the darkest times for both the characters. Again, too bad the ending wasn't dramatic enough. This series is a lot like saikano for me. I think there were a lot of implicit meaning in the story from the anime i still haven't figure it out yet. Anyways, a good anime based on one of the best selling novel in japan. (ugh if i only i knew Japanese.)

I managed to watch the whole series since the 6th episode of the fansubbed ver is out. I just can't help but to notice a familiar similarity to Saikano. I love it!

Good review, I'd have given about the same ratings. It's one of the best OVAs I've seen, but I'd have prefered a different ending XD although the one we're given is also ok I guess, just makes it less happy~
It does portray human behaviour quite well, I was quite shocked at Asaba's change of attitude towards Iriya. I wouldn't have liked it as much if there were lots of battle scenes. The way it's set out makes it more enjoyable.

Nice review! I'm trying so hard to get my hands on this series.. I don't know where to download it from.. (DVD's or videos r out of the question, where i live u can't even find DBZ on video!)

Good review, i agree with almost all of the points, except for the sound...
I like the opening, but all the other musics aren't that good... And as it was said, they don't realy match with the story...
    Well it's my opinion...

    It's a great anime (with a story) and i recommend it !

You have to stick with fansub for the moment. If you haven't watched it yet I'll recommend you to watch it.

Really great OVA. One of my Most favorite of all time.
Nice review. The opening really rocks (heard it 85 times and counting). ^_^'
