Plot Synopsis

Fuu, a 15 year-old girl, is working part-time job at teahouse when one day meet 2 customers who ends up fighting each other and burn the teahouse to the ground. The two young samurai: Mugen and Jin were arrested and about to be executed, because the fire caused one of the government's son killed. On the day of execution, Fuu saved them and in return asked them to make a promise that they would make a journey with her in order to look for a "Samurai with a scent of sun flower". Story & Characters

WHATTT??? I had this reaction so many times when I watched this series. I frist decided to watch it because it was done by the same people who brought us Cowboy Beebop (and that's a great series too). The main story line is "let's find the samurai who smells like sunflowers." The story line is very fragmented among the episodes, and there are many deviations, but while in some series that can be annoying it didn't take away from the story of this series. It's not big on plot though and the main story line was actually really short. Everything else that happened was just random things along the way and you get to learn more about the character's histories. There were some episodes where me and my roomate were just laughing because they had to be on something when they made those episodes. The usual comedy is interrupted by some serious moments and it's in these moments that you get a sense of deepness in this series. But usually it's a silly, action-filled, now that I think about it very much like the story telling style of Cowboy Beebop but even less serious.

Art

The art was very interesting. The story is set in Japan around the time of first industrialization. But the design is more modern. It seems like an oxymoron but that's what it is. The characters are from that period but the way they act is very modern, creating a style where although they wear traditional clothing, their actions make them seem like people in modern Japan. The drawing style is very original and the colors make it seem very 2d because of not a lot of shadowing or whatever it is. It's usually really bright and trippy.

Sound

The soundtrack is wonderful. The sountrack again is where you get a sense of the opposing elements of this series. The opening song is rap, but they have some great instrumental tracks in this series. All very original because I've never seen a series that was set in such a historic background but have such different more modern music. The contrast adds nicely to the whole feel of the series. Another oxymoron is how the characters act. There are some characters who perform traditional Japanese vocal songs and then there are characters that starts to freestyle randomly. Some speak in formal/old Japanese and others talk like yakuza. This series is really just everywhere.

Presentation

Everything combined together makes for a crazy slow yet fast paced, happy yet in a crazy way series. I would watch it just because it's so crazy. The story is somewhat lacking just because of everything else that's going on in the series and an inadequate development. A lot of unanswered questions and cliff hangers that never are resolved. This is also a series to watch just for fun, some deep moments, but overall an enjoyable thing that doesn't cause a lot of thinking. But some parts you might just think about it lot because it was so strange that you have to do a double-take. The story is set in Edo-period Japan but it might as well have been modern Tokyo with swords. The bgm compliments the duality of the series but there are instances still where the more ancient traditional music comes through. Saying that it's just a crazy series doesn't do it justice however because there is a really great storyline, but just not adequately developed. So in the end I have very mixed feelings about this series because it was so much of everything. Everything made it great but at the same time they clashed. But in the end, it's still worth watching.

I agree with many things I see here before me. In fact I agree with just about everything. Yeah. The soundtrack is awesome! a.w.e.s.o.m.e.! The story rating was just. It was a little random. My favorite episode was the one with the Tengu warrior monks. That was funny. Almost as funny as the first episode. The art was my favorite part which I, personally, think desevered a 9 but that seems a little drastic, eh? Presentation of it as a whole was amazing. A spectactle in truth.

I just wanted to say that I like this anime because it seems more character driven than story driven.

This is a cool anime... it's different in many ways... I loved the episode with the rapping loser samurai... funny shit... anyway, i'm just finishing it so i can't really pull of a final verdict... but its fun to watch though!

One of the best presentation of any Anime I've ever seen. Truely an innovation to anime! <('.'^)

Samurai Champloo is new in Guam, and I have to admit it, that I'm loving it :)
