Story & Characters

This is one of my all time most favorite series. I like the manga better because it continues after the anime leaves off but it is a pretty good introduction to the series. The storyline is pretty original and filled with memorable characters. At first glance it may seem very juvenile, but the series is actually very bittersweet. Some parts will make you want to laugh and some parts will make you want to cry. I don't want to really give away anything at all but it's one of the deepest plot I have seen in anime. Watching the anime alone may raise a lot of questions but again, I see the anime only as an introduction for the manga.

The story is about a cursed family who turns into animals of the chinese zodiac when the opposite sex touches them and about the girl from a mediocre background who becomes involved with them. Honda Tohru, the girl, is the central character of the story, but the story is really revolved around everybody's interaction with her. At first she seems very plain, but throughout the story you begin to see why it is that she is such an important person.

There are a lot of themes in this story concerning society which is one of the reasons why I love this series. It's such a combination of light and darkness that you can't really separate the two and the way the characters interact with each other is what makes this series so great.

Art

The drawing style isn't the best I've seen. The style is really sharp and boxy. It is a very unique style of drawing and it's a style that you'll begin to like once you get used to it. It has a simple sort of appeal to it that's not too extravagant. The art is really secondary to the story and it's not one of those series that you watch because of the art. One of the first complaints might be why is Yuki so girly (to put it a nice way), but he's suppose to look like that. Again, it's not one of those series you watch just for the artwork.

Sound

I've only seen the japanese version so I can't comment on the dubbed sounds. The BGM is very soft and there are some great vocal songs too. My favorite song is For Fruits Basket. It sort of encapsulates the whole feel of the story. The BGM is one of those that you can study to. Not too many vocals, mostly instrumental. Personally I hate dubbed versions. If you have to watch it watch in the oringinal version with subs. Otherwise the instrumental tracks aren't the greatest I've heard either but goes well with the story.

Presentation

The overall presentation is great. This is a must watch if you are more into story than action. It might be too slow for people who only like action animes. It's got a quirky sense of humor. Kagura and Kyo are the funniest but all of the characters are pretty lively and are developed nicely even in the shortened version of the anime. Again, it's really original but on second thought maybe not for everybody. The art's not the best, the sounds aren't the best, but they do work well for their purpose and the story is developed really well. This series is great if you look at it as an intro to the manga, but the series by itself will leave you hanging at the end. It does have a sort of conclusion but leaves too many loose threads and unanswered questions. This series is not comedy but has comedic elements, not romance but have romantic elements, and not tragedy but has heart wrenching elements. Whenever it gets too dark, the quirky humor sort of lessens it, but the overall imapct is left nonetheless.
