RahXephon tv Review

Story & Characters

The story is a little confusing at first. Actually, it tends to be befuddling almost entirely through the series. The story centers around young Ayato who has lived in a city that has been sectioned off from the rest of the world by an alien race. His story revolves around how he manages to escape that cage, learn about the outside world, and end up fighting for it. The main storyline is very vague, and mostly confusing, and the producers apparently knew that, feeding you smaller sub-storylines that are completely understandable throughout the series. As you watch, you have the need to know more and more about the mysterious alien race(the Mu) and about why Ayato, seemingly a mere schoolboy, is so impertinent to the future of the world he lives in. There are a few romance sublines throughout the entire story and they're not overly gushy at all. They're subtle and succint at the same time. The story is beautifully woven, and at the end of the series, you're left with a "What??" which after a bit of time slowly develops into an "Ohhhh!". The series makes you really think on the importance we place on certain relationships and how even in a different but fairly parallel situation, they mean nothing at all. Its a beautifully woven story and I most definetly say you'll be pleased with the result.

Art

The visual presentation of the series gets better and better as you progress. THere are certain angles which give some situations in the episodes a really artistic feel to the situation. The given scenes are very well thought out and finely detailed. You have to pay attention to small details in the scenes, or you'll miss an entire dimension of the series. Backgrounds, small objects, they all have relevance. The color choice is well done in most scenes. Its pleasant to look at and there arent any jarring colors ever. There was only one scene that lasted all of 3 seconds where there was a bright burning rainbow light but that was about the worst it got. The scenery and subtle artistic views give this anime a really deep meaning.

Sound

I have to say the OST for this anime is absolutely stunning. The introduction song alone is very beautiful. I watched the introduction to each episode solely for the wonderful, solemn song. The sounds and music clips throughout the series is rather classy. There are violin and piano pieces that are truly pleasant to listen to as two of the characters play instruments. This whole anime actually revolves around the idea of sound. Theres a lot of advanced music terminology used and it works well with the great soundtrack provided.

Presentation

The presentation of the characters, and the subtle presentation of their past really makes the whole series utterly captivating. You get to know each character, and their defining pasts. The series isnt what I'd call original in idea considering its another mecharobot anime, but there is a lot more to it than just that. Unlike Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Gundam Wing, the robot part of it is actually a lot more of an overtone instead of the mainstay of each episode. Usually the battles are brief and dont dominate the episodes. The humor in each episode is cute, its not side wrenching funny, but its good for a chuckle now and then. Its got some slightly innuendo based humor in it but its not forced. In fact the conversations and interactions with amongst the characters is fluid. The anime is really very fun to watch, but you do have to be somewhat of a thinker to figure out whats happening. Its not laid out on a silver platter but its really worth watching and letting the subtle undertones of plot surround and finally grip your mind.

I've no problem with your review except I've yet to develop the "Ohhhh!" (It's been about 3 months since I finished watching it). I'm still going "What??" :)
