Story & Characters

its not everyday a girly falls from the sky. but when a normal miner boy named pazu saves sheeta as she floats down in the sky, he finds she is on the run from both the military and a bunch of pirates. both of which are which are after a family jewel she keeps around her neck which weilds great power, and holds an even greater secret.

pazu's father was an explorer, and at one point, photographed a "city in the sky" although no one believed him, pazu aspires to prove its existence, and therefore earn the respect his late father deserved. but unbeknowest to him, his new found friend, holds a secret to this city, laputa, as it's called

when the government eventually kidnaps sheeta, planning to use her necklace's great power for military purposes, he is forced to team up with the apparently not so bad pirates, to get her back. the pirates are all the sons of the leader... dora... d something... and they're only in it for the treasure that can be found in laputa, rather than world domination like the government.

like all ghibli stories, highly orginal, exciting yet simple and will appeal to all ages. scenery is beautiful, the environment (including the mining town) and the architecture is a world of its own, everything was planned down to the very last detail. characters are likable, neigh, lovable and you couldnt ask for a cuter couple than sheeta & pazu.

Art

the lines are clean, colours are bright and in your face, the way characters dress is certainly different (hence i refer to how the pirate mum dresses up sheeta, native pirate wear? O_O) i love the way ghibli movies can make old people look old, ugly... ugly and cute... cute-ass cute! > < again, the world created within this movie is breathtaking, the architecture of the houses and the gravity-defying railway tracks.

with the ghibli style, like all ghibli movies, it certainly brings a level of comfort to see a style that's familiar.

Sound

i watched the english dub, yes, the one with the all-star cast, as all ghibli movies are adorned with, but the dub is 2nd to none, seamless, effective and best of all, the voices dont suck, they actually match characters.

dont you just hate it when your voice dub it either a girl trying to speak 5 pitches higher then what their voice is used to? japanese voices do ok with this because they're used to it, they're grown with it, so their girls have naturally high pitched voices.

the soundtrack is the cool orchestral kind, half the time, its so seamless into the atmosphere you barely ever notice it, which is good, shows the director has good skills ^ ^

Presentation

epic, dazzling and entrancing, laputa is a movie anyone can and probably grow to love, the only criticism i have of it is that i think it was a lot of wasted potential, i mean. its could be as big as anything from the little mermaid or even pokemon fro kids, it just needs better exposure.

the story makes for an interesting, yet engaging story, i like most about this movie, the fact that it answers all the burning questions you develop over the duration of the movie, don't you hate it when a movie leaves questions unanswered, or crappily so?

laputa certainly has its funny points, like when all the pirates have a crush on sheeta, its drmatic points, like when pazu discovers the link between sheeta and laputa, and its action, when sheeta gets her ponytails shot off... yes! shot off! but in the end, it is an enjoyable watch you wont forget easily, i recommend it not only to anime lovers, but anyone in their right mind, seriously, watch this movie! > <

Captalization and punctuation is the key in reviews...besides i believe that you rated this anime too high, considering it wasnt all that good.

i haven't seen the movie yet. i have the soundtrack. i love the music, it's sounds pretty. true, this review probably needs punctuation and capitalization (for formal things). aside from that, i found it informative.

I have seen the movie and too me it was pretty good and it was one of my favorites. It's true you need puctuation and capitalization. Otherwise very informative.

I've seen the movie and I think it was great too.. I won't bother saying anything about Punctuation etc. because its been said :P But I'd tend to agree with pretty much everything said there :) I'd recommend it, and I have ^.^

oooh wasnt it the 'castle in the sky' rather than the 'city in the sky'? or am I just getting too confused with the title :P hehe

laputa's definitely cute, i agree with the review, but not the rating. i also like the storylines, they are very original.

I agree with the first remark, but I do think it's a very very good movie! XD In fact, it's one of my favourite, along with Totoro.
I agree with the ratings in this review more than the other Laputa review, but I wouldn't have given everything a 9. Actually, I don't even know what I'd give it because I love this movie so much but don't want to be too biased either..XD the dilemma...^^;;
I love Miyazaki's movies so much that I almost worship him...the stories and art as well as the music, they are so much more grand and unique compared to most other anime out there...Even though my friends tell me the characters look ugly, I think the art is great.
Anyway, great review ^^ keep up the good work~!

sorry i must've written this review while on a laputa-driven-high, and about capitalistation and punctuation, i'll definitely include it in my next review ^ ^ thanks for your comments you guys!

this is really detailed, thanks for the review~
