Story & Characters

The story of monster is based on a Doctor by the name of Kenzo Tenma. He is the elite doctor of Roscheler Memorial Hospital and also he is engaged to the director's daughter, Eva Hanneman. One night, a boy is shot in the head, and Kenzo by duty decides to be the chief surgeon of the operation because he is the only one in the hospital who knows how to do it, however, he is later told to operate on the mayor who arrives later instead. Apprentally, the reason being that the mayor promised a huge fund increase for the hospital next year, and so the director told Kenzo on the phone that they could not afford him to die yet. However, Kenzo decides that he is gonna operate on the boy because he thinks that all lives are equal, if he doesnt operate on the boy soon, he would die. The mayor later died, therefore, Kenzo is blamed, Eva broke up with him, all his research are cancelled. Following his demotion, he sat in the chair next to that boy, and said "not all the human lives are unequal? people who think that are better off dead" next day, the chairman is found dead, cyanide poisoning. The board appointed Tenma to be the new chairman. Art

The animation, for a non-action anime is beautiful. The use of shadows in Monster is genius, especially when Dr. Tenma sees Johann for the first time in years Johann`s face is obscured in shadow, but the rest of his body is lit by the moon, and it lends an aura of menace and fear to Johann that the scene would otherwise lack. At the end of the scene, when we do see Johann`s face it looks so fresh and wholesome that it makes him seem even more menacing and fear-inspiring. It`s these subtle touches that give monster the aura that everything isn`t quite right with the world, that scary things exist in places we`ve never seen, but we will, some day.

Sound

I don`t care much for the music; the acting is good and the voices are distinguishable as well. Mouth movements are sometimes a bit off, but only perfectionists care about that. Sound effects are the hardest to rate, I didn`t notice anything unusual which I guess means that there`s nothing to complain about.
Theres very much no themes in the anime, unlike others.
In total, i an describe the music as "eerie"
The voice actors are somewhat average in the anime, the only exceptional voice acting is Johann, who never seems to raise/drop his voices and speaks with one tone.

Presentation

The anime is based on the manga.
Overall, because of the theme of this anime, it is pretty serious. It is good and a nice anime if you watch it like one episode a day, but if you are like me, watching like several episodes back to back, (on this issue, i do not blame me, i blame the fansub groups, anime-kraze and anime-keep) for releasing 4 or 5 episodes at once in a short period of time. The story gets somewhat gruesome and dark, it is actually i would say suited more for a TV documentary than for an anime.
Theres little humor in all the episodes i have seen, maybe when you see like surprise murderers, it is not going to be very fun. Also the story is presented in the way in which it kind of drags. some episodes are not very much needed. I would be happier if they do the anime in a 40- episode pack than a 78 episode one.
I dont think theres games released for this anime so I couldnt really talk about it.
Overall, I think this is an above average anime and I do recommend people to go and get this if you are not doing anything useful, XD

I was sooo looking forward to reading a Monster review..but got a shock when I saw the 6.5 XD......well...what can I say, maybe not everyone has my taste in anime.
the Story and character was developed so well that I don't even think I've seen better development in another anime. I can see the way people can get influenced through their upbringing and turn into bad people, I can see how people fight and kill because of money. There is a lot of curruption and violence in this anime, but all to reflect real life human behaviour (a little exaggerated to prove the point).
Even though it drags on a bit sometimes, I believe nearly every episode is needed to show character development, and even the ones that are fillers keeps me on the edge of my seat wanting for more.
This anime's by far one of my favourite animes, even though I wasn't all into this genre.
But anyway, like I said, maybe not everyone has my taste, but if I was to rate it, I'd have rated nearly everything 9-10. ^^;; The sound was really good XD it went really well with the story I thought~

above average?!? This was an outstanding suspense drama/thriller. By far, certainly not "above average". More like the tip of the top. Sorry snake and akika, but not every anime can, nor should, have explosions, spntaneous comedy, mecha, super chicks in school uniforms, and every other cliche that is de rigeur in anime nowadays. Some people actually want either a semblance of char. developement, or actual char. development! Likewise, some discerning fans actually want a long, sweeping, engrossing storyline that pulls you in and keeps you wanting more. Seems you chumps oughta stick to watching the same formulaic crap you've been watching all this time. Stay in the box, you losers. Whatever. These chumps must be Craptoon Network dubee devotees or something.

I would not say the best anime ever made, but I read manga and it's very good.

The world NEEDS cartoons and comics like Monster. I'll just leave it at that.

can't argue with this review. the anime wasn't the greatest thing in the world, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world either. I did watch quite a lot of it until I dropped it and finished it with reading spoilers.
