Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist tv Review

"You can't gain something without sacrificing something else of the equal value. This is the principle of the equivalent trade."

The story takes place in Amestris, in the early 1900's. Two brothers, Edward and his younger brother Alphonse Elric, live with their mother, Trisha, in the small village of Resembool. Although their father left home when they were still very young, his sons inherited his passion for alchemy and practiced it on their own. In 1909, Trisha dies of an unknown illness, the boys' father still nowhere in sight. When Ed finds out about human transmutation from one of his father's books, he and Al engage in intense training in order to be able to perform the ritual that will bring their mother back.

In 1910, the Elric brothers cross the forbidden line; unfortunately, the resurrection attempt is a complete failure, as Ed loses his left leg and Al — his entire body. In a last desperate attempt to undo the damage, Ed binds his brother's spirit to a nearby suit of armor, at the further cost of his right arm. After recovering, the two embark on a journey to find the legendary Philosopher's Stone, rumored to facilitate alchemic tasks without the requirement of equivalent exchange, in hopes of getting their original bodies back.

Story & Characters

51 episodes, 1 movie (coming out July 23) suggested rating: 14+ (can be very volient in certain part, especially nearing the end)

Fullmetal Alchemist is an amazing story of love, courage, and true devotion. It is actually several stories inside of one enormous plot. All very exellent, and, I will add as animes that do this bother me, there are no side episodes that aren't important; all of them will come together in the end. And what an end it is, I wouldn't think of spoiling it but it is amazing. One that no one could ever guess, but fits the anime perfectly.

The manga, while just as awsome, is different in many ways. Especially as the plot continues. You'll enjoy both if you enjoy one, but try and avoid mixing the plot lines aside from the characters' emotions because you'll just get upset.

This is my favorite anime right now, no competition, and I've seen many, many animes. Infact, both the manga and the anime rein at the top of my list. There is a little bit of everything which is potrayed perfectly in the right amounts. The science of anime was prefected with is anime/manga.

Art

art? excellent for the most part though it has it's moments of less then perfect work. But, it only improves as it contunies. The art in episode 13 is awsome in certain parts and noty is good in others(but it's still an awsome episode) also, another part is in episode 25, one part with a character named Riza Hawkeye(an awsome charrie...just saying) isn't drawn as well as she could have been. But for the most part it's excitelent work.

The whole manga is drawen very well, I have problems with it.

Sound

While there are certain songs in other animes that may be better then the music of fullmetal alchemist, this music is quite good. In the english verison on [adult swim] they only play the second begining but if you get lucky enough to see the japanese verizon over the dvds, the last begining is particularly good followed by the second-to-last or 3rd begining. The music during the shows is excellent also. The music alone expresses the emotion of the scene, an example is in episode 45 when there is a flashback to 400 years before. The music expresses the plot perfectly. It does this throughout the story and is always good. I have seen the whole series and have never once been disapointed

While the english voices aren't the best (but when are they ever?) they were very well chosn as far as english voice changes go. The japanese voices are of course better and I suggest watching and judging this anime by it's original japanese version (though the english one is pretty damn good) Emotion is expressed well through the voices in both versions.

Presentation

It's Presentation is flawless, there is everything in this anime: humor, drama, romance, suspence, serious motions, sometimes sentimetal, and filled with action. I laughed, I cried, I got mad, upset.... It really has a way of dragging you in. Each character is given a deeper side and there hate-able characters. I suggest making an effort to see the deeper meaning because it only gets better the more you look into it. (It makes symbolism look cool :P)

It's amazing to watch, worth staying up to any hour. It NEVER gets old, and this is from the person who has seen the series at least 20 times each, some episodes up to 60+ times. (no lie, it's that good) It really drags you in, I cry at certain parts even now, I can't help it, it's just that good. From start to finish it leaves you speechless... It just unbelievable. An anime that could change your way of thinking, there are very few animes that can do this. I put full aproval into this anime and iut deserves all the cedit I'm giving it so please, take a look.

Well done! This is a good review of an awesome series. I personally prefer the Japanese version of the anime, but that's me. It is so cool and deep. A lot of people think that it is a kid anime because the brothers are about 14/15, but I don't think kids would really get it. It can be so deep. I actually was sort of angry at the ending and wanted the movie to "make things better" but it isn't. *sigh* Well, it was appropriate for the series, but man! Anyway, see you around MT! :D

I love this anime!! It's definitely kind of violent at times, but besides that, it's great to watch =)

lolz, ^^ yeah, while I perfer the japanese version don't get me wrong, when I met the voice acters for Winry, Roy and Ed it was the happiest moment of my life. ^^ I love those guys, especially Vic, they're all really nice and funny and do a great job.

oh! and about the ending, it's one of those things that people who don't have an opened mind can't accept because it is something that you'd never expect but it's really powerful and amazign if you can comprehend it

I just can't stand the English dubs, especially Alphonse's. God, the boy can't act a bit!! Luckily I watched FMA with the original Japanese voices :)

I'm one of the rare fans who likes the English voices better... but I can understand why some people might like the Japanese version better.

And I like how the manga and the anime have different plots- it's like having two series instead of one. Although you're right, it can get confusing if you mix up the storylines of the two. But generally it isn't really problematic.

Great review - I agree with it 100%! Honestly - I didn't think that I could get this attached to an anime series - there is NEVER a dull moment.

I honestly don't mind the voice english actors, I don't see what everyone has against them... there are much worst dubbed anime series

  12. toonmaker Jan 26, 2006
