Story & Characters

One of, if not THE best reason to play any and all of the Dynasty Warriors games is because of the story; It is based entirely on the amazing Chinese classic "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", and even goes further and takes reference from the "Sanguo Zhi", which is a factual documentation of the Three-Kingdoms era from which the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel was based upon. That is perhaps another of the amazing parts about playing Dynasty Warriors; that almost all of the characters you use were real people, and a lot of the situations really did happen! (with some creative license, of course).

I cannot even begin to express how rich the Romance of the Three Kingdoms storyline is; suffice to say, it is not only a classic Chinese book, but a classic book, period. Dynasty Warriors is so wonderful because it has so much story to work with; perhaps even too much, as it may be confusing for completely new players to pick up on. However, it is worth the effort; just from playing the game, you can learn a lot.

The game introduces many of the people involved in the Three Kingdoms era, and lets you play as well over 40 of the major figures, including Guan Yu, who was later declared and worshiped as China's "God of War". On top of this, every stage is wonderfully recreated to include the actions and strategies that really happened or were described in the ROTK novel, as well as elaborating on these with "what ifs" depending on the player's results of the battle.

The game itself presents as much of the plot as it can to the player (although they make it easy to ignore, since most DW players are only interested in the action), but have thoughtfully included a section purely for information about the officers and battles, so those interested can look it up anytime.

Art

As the series progresses, so does the graphics; The lastest installment in the series, Dynasty Warriors 5, has absolutely beautiful graphics. The cut scenes are practically breath taking. Even the in game graphics are pretty amazing. I am especially impressed by how well they've done faces; the different facial expressions they have for every character, both in the cut scenes and just in the regular game are pretty damn nice.

I am also very fond of the character design. All the costumes are incredibly elaborate, and every character has several costumes. The same detail is applied to the several different weapons each character can acquire.

The character moves and special moves are also really well done and a pleasure to look at (an satisfying to use on the enemies!)

Sound

The soundtrack is a lot of fun, and appropriate. There are a lot of rock / dance-type of mixes that make nice atmosphere for when you're slashing away at thousands of angry chinese soldiers ^^; ... The music is applied seemlessly and is unobtrusive, which is another good thing for a game where you replay many of the stages over and over again.

The voice acting is pretty decent, and yes, I do find myself laughing at some of the cheesy lines, but it is certainly part of the game's charm. My one complaint is that they did not include the Japanese language track in Dynasty Warriors 5 as they did with the previous installments. I understand their reasoning for this; too much text to read clutters up the screen terribly, and in two-player mode it would be utterly unbearable to add any more text to the screen. However, it would have been nice to at least have the option, and let the player decide if the clutter was worth the bother or not.

Presentation

The one problem with Dynasty Warriors is the monotony; there are plenty of people who can't stand slashing at enemies over and over again. However, for those of you who, like myself, loved those old, simple beat-em-up side-scroller games, Dynasty Warriors is just the ultimate evolution of the beat-em-up genre. There is so much replay value for those who enjoy it, and so many characters, weapons and stages to unlock. And that's only for story mode; there are still the mini-games that they create for every DW installment. And, like I said before, the best part of DW is it's rich story. You can't escape from learning some neat history every time you play a stage, and if you're like me, you'll end up really attached to some of these historical figures and be dying to learn more.

And last but not least, my favorite part of DW is that it has 2-player mode. I love playing games with my boyfriend and friends, and there are so few cooperative 2 player games these days that it's a shame. I always look forward to the next installment of DW to keep me playing with all my loved ones =)

I've always had the pleasure of listening to many of the older soundtracks, which incredibly got better from the third installment, onwards.

From the battle of Hu Lao Gate, to Lu Bu's Remix Theme for DW3 XL, the game never ceases to amaze me, despite the gameplay being sort of repetitive at times. The music is still interesting to listen to even after multiple countless hours of gameplay. Not to mention, I find Zhou Yu's theme quite interesting to pick up to from time to time. Could they make these Musou attacks any cheaper, though? lol

However, as much as I love to play Dynasty Warriors, the storyline that it carries onwards is not its strength and focal point. Although they do emphasize many of the characters in the Three Kingdoms era [many which exist in about the same time period really astounds me, not to say the least, fairly impressive] - the storyline is better portrayed through all means of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where their historical scenarios truly touch close to the actual Dynasty history at its finest.

And a big miss, because sometimes the treasure of Japanese voice-acting is what keeps the originality of the game at its finest. This is one of the reasons why I dislike dubbed versions nonetheless. They lose that heightened quality and effort that most other people in Japan bring to the table. Despite that, since I already know how to speak and understand Japanese, the text hasn't really been that big of a problem. I'll have to admit, the war cry they give at times - absolutely hilarious.

It's also one of the reasons why DW still has become so popular in Japan. When a multiplayer version comes out - kind of like Dynasty Warriors online, I wonder how chaotic that would be, nonetheless. It would definitely bring the best of the Three Kingdoms series. Just saying, of course. I'm a big Dynasty Warriors fan as well. **Tips her cap** However, I dislike the way the computer thinks, and its strategy, however, especially while they destroy certain leaders slowly at random. Funny enough, with a rigged morale system by your side, you can just walk in and decimate an entire army with one man, and that is unbelievable once you have obtained your highest level item, believe me. Sima Yi wouldn't be too happy, now would he? lol **Giggles** Go Da Qiao!

Yeah, and let's not forget - Dynasty Warriors Empire, was a complete let-down. I'm sorry to say, in my own opinion. **Shrugs** But thank goodness Dynasty Warriors 5 made it all that better. Yaya! I'm still naturally looking for the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, however. It's definitely nice to have a game that ties around with Dynasty Warriors. Dynasty Warriors is more like the less story - more fight, type of game. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is built far more on streategy. I prefer VII the most because it has the most features out of any game, and is the most realistic of its kind [though the AI has been rather faulty, I'd have to admit]. Me? I prefer IX the most. It's still my joy in a bottle. Especially with Guan Yu, Sun Jian, Zhou Yu, Taishi Chi, and Cao Ren in the charge, it seems likely that they'll never lose. Yaya!

Ooh, thank you for pointing this out! I should have clarified -- I see Dynasty Warriors as a sort of "gateway drug", lol. It exposes people (like myself) who weren't entirely familiar or interested in the Three Kingdoms era, and gets 'em hooked. It brought me to seek out not only the ROTK strategy games, but to go on and learn about the actual history and get the books as well.

There may be one, but I can't think of a single other action game that had remotely the same effect on me ... But hey, if anyone can reccommend one ... Let me at 'em! XD

Wow!!! A review of Dynasty Warriors, CooL!!!

At my viewpoint, the Dynasty Warrior game emphasizes on the historical characters on the time of the three kingdoms, Wu, Wei, and Shu (or Xu). One of the most prominent characters here is Lu Bu, which is the most powerful and fearful warrior at that time, Zhao Yun (my favorite in the game), I think he's one of the main characters here and so on.

I only played Dynasty Warriors 3, 4, and 5 but they sure are great. But in my opinion, Dynasty Warriors 3 is still the best even though the storyline of the characters is not as emphasized as it is on Dynasty Warriors 5.

I also love the music of the game. I think the power of the music is very well suited for the wars.

Grrrrr... I hate Lu Bu!!! Too powerful to handle... Must be too powerful to defeat him!

I'm enjoying very much Dynasty Warriors! I love playing it, because it's based on the chinese history...I love Sima Yi, now he's the strongest character I have, with Zhen Ji and Da Qiao...I downloaded the images, but I don't know who is the character designer...anybody knows who he is?

Well, I also love playing Dynasty Warrior especially DW5. The graphics in DW5 are prettier and better. I like Zhou Yu (He's so handsome and cool!), Xiao Qiao, Xing Cai and Diao Chan. Lu Bu is definitely one of the character that I kinda dislike because he's too strong to handle; I always get beaten by him. Hope there will be more DW scans to be added here at MT.... ;)

shouldn't this have been put under games and not tv, I don't even think there is a tv version of this. but not yet have I gotten bored/tired of playing dynasty warriors, it's about the only game out there where you can slash down your enemies while slashing around your allies and only hurt your enemies.
