Plot Synopsis

The Diclonius, a mutated homo sapien that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of mankind, possesses two horns in their heads, and has a "sixth sense" which gives it telekinetic abilities. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government. Lucy, a young and psychotic Diclonius, manages to break free of her confines and brutally murder most of the guards in the laboratory, only to get shot in the head as she makes her escape. She survives and manages to drift along to a beach, where two teenagers named Kouta and Yuka discovers her. Having lost her memories, she was named after the only thing that she can now say, "Nyuu," and the two allow her to stay at Kouta's home. However, it appears that the evil "Lucy" is not dead just yet...

Story & Characters

Elfen Lied is an excellent anime … is about Lucy, a Diclonius, which means she has small horns on the side of her head and extra invisible arms that come out of her back, the story starts with an severed arm twitching in a pool of blood, and it just get bloodier from there … she is imprisoned in a high security research facility and in wave of bloody violence and brutality she escapes … but as she is about to jump off a cliff and into the water, she gets shot with a .50 caliber anti-tank rifle.
She ends up on a beach, lost, alone, and stricken with amnesia, she then wanders into a kindly family that takes her under their care, these people are Kouta and Yuka, cousins, the main plot of the story is just how two college kids and a girl who can only say “Nyu … Nyu� live.
Along the way more people move into the house, Mayu, a homeless girl who ran away from her abusive mom and perverted step-dad, and Nana, another Diclonius, that was sent to kill Lucy.
The story is very original and very good. There is quite a bit of violence and blood, this adds to the story, but some of the ways people die are unnecessary (pens thrown through other people heads, hearts being punched out). There is some nudity but not in a perverted way or anything.
Overall the story gets a 9 … so if you haven’t seen it go out and get it … you can get all 13 episodes in Japanese for $20.00 on the internet or there is the English version out now … only the first 4 episode though (not as good).

Art

The art is very good. The way people get slaughtered is shown with great detail (but the artists may want to look how to draw bones some time in the future). The backgrounds are very detailed.
The colors are all very cool and fit together well. Everything just seemed so real. What I noticed in some episodes is that people seemed to kind of “slide� when they walked … not a problem, I’m just very observant.
Again the detail put into every scene and character is astounding. It was simply amazing. Everything awesome. Well of this review the art get rated the lowest just because everything else was better. I’m not saying it was bad … just the lowest.
I give the art a 7. It was very good … but I have seen better.

Sound

The sound was excellent. Not only the characters voices but also the noise from everything was so nice. The sound of bones breaking … blood dripping … everything. The music used in this anime fits … I may not like most of them but “Lilium� is on almost all the time when your around me (for those of you who have heard the soundtrack the “Saint� version is better and more evil).
I just wonder, “Is that really what bones breaking, and arms being severed actually sound like�. Even if it’s not, the way it’s incorporated just make it seem so real … even if it’s not. That is one of the reasons why I rated the sound the way I did.
The sound gets an 8 because of the detail put into it … one of the best sounding anime I’ve heard in awhile.

Presentation

The presentation is awesome. Just the way it feels watching it is creepy and cool at the same time. I LOVED it! I have seen the anime 9 times and it never gets old. Every element of this anime contributes to the overall presentation. I can’t begin to describe how awesome it is. Wow, I’m just rambling, aren’t I?
Ok, on to the review again. I can’t really think of what else to say about the excellent presentation of this excellent anime.
There was SOME humor …if there it was very minor. The funnier parts were the times Nyu pissed all over the floor, the time she started “feeling up� Yuka, and the time Yuka walks in while Kouta is changing Nyu, and the time she bursts through the door naked with soap all over, from running out of the bath. When it was meant to be funny it was hilarious.
Again the ways some people got killed was ridiculous. But cool nonetheless. I showed it to my brother and he didn’t sleep that night, he’s 7, I don’t know why he got scared it’s a freaking “cartoon�. Yeah … I like violence in movies, TV shows, anime and games but as I said it was completely unneeded. Wait … I’ve said that 3 times … oh … I’m done.
There are some sad parts too. One time in a “flashback� episode Lucy’s dog gets killed by the classroom bully, and later she kills Kouta whole family. Oh … if you haven’t seen the anime disregard that lat sentence.
Well I give it a 10. You may think its high, but you’re wrong! This is the first review I’ve written; please tell me what you think.
