Mobile Suit Gundam: Alternate Universe tv Review

Mobile New Century Gundam X, Turn A Gundam, manga, video games and other side stories

Story & Characters

This review will cover the Gundam series Gundam X.

The story of Gundam X starts with a war between the colonies and the Earth Federation. At the end of the war the space army dropped a large amount of colonies on the earth, thus killing 99% of the human race. The story starts in AW0015, 15 years after the war. The main character of the series is 15 year old Garrod Ran who rescues a mystirious girl named Tiffa Adill from Vultures (groups of people who search the earth for things to sell). After that he stumbles upon a Gundam X (one of three Gundam-type mobile suits from the Earth Federation) and becomes the pilot of it. Both of them later join the crew of the Vulture-ship Freeden whose pilot Jamil Neate wants to find and help Newtypes (people with strange powers) and it turns out that Tiffa is one of them.

So the journey starts and on it the crew meets many people and has to fight against the New Earth Federation. Also they try to discover the secret about Newtypes. During the end of the series a new war between earth and space starts and the Freeden is between it.

Art

Because the anime was made in the mid 90s it logically isn’t as well drawn as the newer Gundam series but nevertheless it is well made and nice to watch. The Gundams especially the Gundam X and its successor, the Double X, are well made although they remind on the Gundams from Gundam Wing. Not only that the art of the whole series reminds at Gundam Wing and also the characters look sometimes like characters from Wing. But this shouldn’t be a critic (only if you didn’t like Wing). What only bothers me is that the colours aren’t really strong and deep.

Sound

The music of the anime is in my opinion not so good and nothing special (in comparison other Gundam series). There are no remarkable songs or special image songs for the characters. Although there are a few nice and good background tracks they all in all are not good or interresting. The only really remarkable songs are the opening and ending songs, which in my opinion are the best songs of the whole series and even better than the opening and endings of Gundam Wing. It’s a pity that this series (although it got bad ratings over the years) didn’t get a better music.

Presentation

If you compare Gundam X to other Gundam series it isn’t really that good. Also it hasn’t a really big main story which is strongly followed throughout the series. Instead it is divided into several story arcs which are all connected to Jamil’s journey to find and help Newtypes. Also you often find connections to Gundam Wing like with the Gundams or the characters but nevertheless they all are unique and interresting. Also you will find connections to the Universal Century timeline. So reminds the space war and the colony drop at the beginning on the One Year War from the original Gundam series. Also the most remarkable part of the series is the story of the Newtypes and the most important part of it is the fact that it brings an answer to what Newtypes really are. Although this doesn’t affect the UC it is an important factor. So although the series got bad reputations it isn’t as bad as it is sometimes said and it would be interresting to know what would have happened if the series ran for another ten episodes instead of only 39.
