Story & Characters

Recently the question of other intelligent life in the universe was finally answered, as a flying saucer plummeted to earth and parked itself haphazardly in Tokyo Bay. But instead of discovering bloodthirsty green men from mars, humans found a beautiful and peaceful race of people who wanted nothing more than to be friends. With their spaceship out of order and human technology not advanced enough to help fix it, the 150 aliens on board the ship were, for good or ill, stranded on Earth. Luckily, the humans, seeing that the aliens meant no harm and simply wanted to make a new life, welcomed them for the most part. Labelling the beaufitul extraterrestrials DearS, the humans have allowed them to attempt to assimilate into human life in Japan. As a part of the adjustment process, some of the DearS participate in a Homestay program which will allow them to stay with an Earth family while attending high school and learning Earth ways.

Takeya is an average Japanese teen boy who lives by himself. The reasoning isn't quite clear, but for whatever reason he lives apart form his mother in a rented apartment while in high school. He's a bit of a cynic, a slacker, and quite the slob. Upon hearing about the DearS homestay program from his friend, Takeya is derisive at best, wondering why anyone would want to live with an alien, let alone find one attractive as many of his classmates seem to. Takeya's friends just assume that he is basically uninformed, and hardheaded. After all, both the DearS males and females are quite a bit more attractive than the average human being.

While sulking on his way home, Takeya runs into a wearing nothing but a cloak, who doesnt seem to be able to talk. Not wanting to be around this obviously strange person, Takeya tries to go on his way. Doing so the girl walks away into the running traffic and in front of a truck, Takeya shows his kindess and concern and save her, after that she kneels in front of him, kisses his hand and professes herself to protect him and be his slave. To his annoyance she follows him, and nothing he says or does will make her leave him alone. Once Takeya relazes that this strange girl is really a lost DearS, he really wats to get rid of her. But when his landlord's daughter, Neneko finds out that he has a DearS staying in his room, he finds it impossible to come up with a good reason to kick the pretty but annoying alien out. Poor Takeya. Stuck with a beautiful alien female who can't speak Japanese and refuses to leave his apartment.

Art

If there is one thing that can be appreciated about DearS, it's the art. Peach-Pit has put together a truly beautiful manga and anime. The character designs are elegant while favoring the slightly more classic anime look. Slender graceful legs accompany the large sad eyes. And not surprisingly, DearS is absolutely riddled with fan service that, so far, comes in the form of Ren's innocent lack of modesty and Ms. Mitsuka's obsession for wearing next to nothing. While there's no real nudity, DeaR's is still positively overflowing with barely concealed cleavage.

Peach-Pit's delicate style with the addition of quite a few super deformed moments thrown in for humor prove that even if their story skills have not quite developed fully, they have more than enough talent in the art department.

Sound

The opening theme song is great it and its one of my favorites very nice so is the ending theme, Even though they sound a bit kiddy, it's still cool, especially when you see the the animation with it.

Voice actors are one of the best
Kishou Taniyama as Takeya
Ai Shimizu as Ren
Mai Nakahara as Miu
Kikuko Inoue as Mitsuka-sensei

Overall all the anime has a great sound. The dialogues, sound effects, and musics are all very crisp and clear. The dynamic range is excellent, with Takeya’s yelling and Mitsuka’s moans of pleasure coming through especially well.

Presentation

This anime has pretty much everything that I like to see in a show...cute aliens in lingerie. Okay, just kidding... DearS has a very Happy Lesson feel to it, with most of the character design and animation looking very familiar. The story so far has been very interesting, and the characters are all very well voiced by a high quality seiyuu cast. The animation is very good, with the same Happy Lesson tendency for the male lead character to have over-exaggerated facial expressions.

Aside from the extreme Chobitsiness, this on the first episode of DearS it was very well done. The music was excellent, the animation smooth, and I really liked the character design. It was actually pretty hilarious, even though a couple of the scenarios were exactly like the ones in Chobits. The characters that I've seen so far were good, and one of my favorites was the overly-erotic teacher. (Voiced by my favorite voice actress, Kikuko Kikuko Inoue!)

If you are looking for a romantic comedy along the lines of Chobits and Happy Lesson, then definately check this one out.

Final Verdict

I agree DearS is quite similar to Happy Lesson, but I don't think it deserve so high as a 9.50...i quite liked it for its humour and character development, but it somehow lacked depth in its story. It would have been better if there was some more serious/meaningful scenes in it. The ending also seemed a bit loose, as if there should be more coming or something.
Overall it was a good anime, still definitely worth watching.

Great review;informative and comprehensive, but doesn't give to much away plotwise. I've only read the manga myself, but if the show is as good as that, then maybe i'll take a look sometime.

i agree it is one of the best anime i have ever read. i also like the manga it is very interesting to read.
