Story & Characters

The Story So Far The 22nd Century... Mankind has succeeded in his dream of developing a natural, limitless energy supply. It was the dawning of the Age of Magic. Science and industry, the source of environmental pollution and weapons of mass destruction, were outlawed. This controversial decision was to bring history, as mankind knew it to an end...
However, the abolition of technology did little to soothe mankind's suffering. A war erupted, fueled by fearsome weapons based on rapidly developing magical theory. Eventually, shockingly powerful biological weapons were produced by fusing human and animal DNA with magic, resulting in a horrible mix of vitality and raw strength. This was the birth of the Gears. The powerful military state that produced the Gears monopolized the manufacturing process, bringing countless other lands under its control. These Gears were designed to be little more than slaves, incapable of independent thought. Yet from among their ranks a rebel appeared, announcing himself to be self-aware. This insurrectionist, calling himself Justice, gathered an army of fellow Gears and declared war on all mankind. Despite heavy initial casualties to these renegade Gears, the humans put their differences aside and formed an elite group of warriors to combat the Gear menace. This group of brave heroes became know as the Sacred Order of Holy Knights. One hundred years of brutal war later...The fierce battle between the Gears and the humans, which had become known as the Crusades, was finally at an end. The heroic Sacred Order had sealed Justice inside an impenetrable dimensional prison, and it was only a matter of time before the remaining masterless Gears were rounded up and destroyed. However, five years after the end of the Crusades, the walls of Justice's dimensional prison have unexpectedly begun to erode away. Assessing the threat before them, the world's leaders quickly organize an international fighting tournament to select members for a proposed Second Sacred Order of Holy Knights. Astoundingly, the prize for this tournament was said to be literally anything one desired: The victor would get to make a single wish... any wish at all. Yet in the panic surrounding the imminent decay of Justice's dimensional prison, few seemed to take notice of the rather suspicious rules of this tournament, such as the welcoming of criminals, and the permission to shed blood during the matches...

Art

Best 2d graphics I've ever seen in my life.. This game animation wise is very detailed and all the backgrounds are colorful and interesting unlike most fighting games I've played. The characters have tons of sprites each with their own individual taunts, poses, attacks that always proves appealing in some way.. This game simplly has no competition when it comes to graphics. The resulotion is high making the characters themselfs detailed yet flashy and simple at the same time!. I simply lose a fight sometimes because I am looking at the nice backgrounds on every stage.

Sound

The sound is completly awesome, acutally it is what appealled to me before the graphics. The game has it's own rock heavy metal sound track. The music in the game will just hype you up to make you play better. The voice acting is clear as hell, you can understand every word their saying not to mention they have a varity, they do not act or say the same things everytime, even taunts are different depending on how you do them. These lines never get repetitive.. ANd yes this is a japanese game but there are soem characters that speak clear english. The character say and act differently before a round depending on who they are fighting, a simple feature that most fighting games out today do not have.. Sound effects are awesome. The only warning I must give to people is that the game's sound is soley based on heavy metal / rock music. Also every vicotyr speach is different depending on which character you beat. If rock gives you a headatch or you hate it, then the sound might ruin the experience for you.

Presentation

The Guilty Gear series has always survived on the fringes of the 2-D fighting world, while the big names from Capcom and SNK occupy most of the spotlight. Guilty Gear seems to intimidate the average fighting fan, thanks to its bizarre characters, complex combination system, and the dreaded Instant Kill. And considering the fact that my local video game retailer got FOUR WHOLE COPIES of Guily Gear X2 in, it doesn't look like there's going to be a huge boom for the series any time soon. Which is a shame, since the game is a gorgeous and thoroughly entertaining 2-D fighter with a unique sense of humor.
I'm not going to try to explain the 'plot' behind the world of Guilty Gear, mostly because I don't understand it, and you'd probably think I was either drunk or making it up. Does it get any more entertaining than wacky Japanese video game stories, semi-translated into English by Billy the Intern? Heck no. I'll just put it like this: a bunch of weird guys and girls are going to beat each other up for fun and profit, and leave it at that.
On the surface, Guilty Gear X2 is like any other 2-D fighter you've played in the last decade. Jumping, punching, kicking, pulling back to block, fireballs, goofy taunts, and all of that jazz. The traditional special move inputs apply, such as the fireball motion, the sonic boom motion, and so on. You guys know what I'm talkin' about, right? You could just pop in this game and spend a night of button-mashing with the guys, and be thoroughly entertained.
However, there's a whole lot of depth going on if you're interested. There's a tension meter at the bottom of the screen that fills up slowly whenever you walk towards your foe or pull off special moves. You can spend this energy to perform nasty little special tension moves that tend to be very damaging, and neato-looking to boot. And if you want to go for the gusto, you can hit all four attack buttons to enter instant kill mode. During this mode, you can perform your character's instant kill attack before your tension bar drains out. The instant kill attack tends to be hard to connect, and your opponent can always block or dodge it. But if it hits, your enemy is slain no matter how much health they have left, and you win the round. Some of the instant kill animations are wonderfully funny, and they put the fatalities in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance to shame. Funny beats gory any day of the week.
Heck, there's more, including the tricky roman cancels and other fancy maneuvers. However, to be perfectly honest, I haven't quite got the hang of those yet. This is an expert-level game, and I'm at the wannabe-expert level. But the game is more than entertaining enough that I want to take the time to learn the intricacies of the combat. I haven't been this dedicated to a fighting game since my SoulCalibur days. Tight controls, wacky characters, a wide variety of play modes... everything a 2-D fighting fan could ask for.

This game is awesome im a big fan of the guilty gear series, but I have to say guilty gear isuka was not what I had expected especially with the series growing in depth in each on the series.
If you are a fan of street fighter or even samurai shodown I recomend this game it is more fast game than either one.
The special moves are awesome and the character are great.
Not sure Why this game is not more popular but I have to say those who have not played this game you are missing out on a great game.

this game is realli fast paced. i believe even among 2d fighting games, the combos and timing of the combos here are much faster and is a definitely plus form me since i love speed in fighting games. furthermore, every character here seems to appeal to me more then any other fighting games out there

Guilty Gear is one of the very few surviving 2D games and hopefully it doesn't go or attempt to go 3D like other 2D fighters

fast paced 2D anime-style fighter , who doesn't like love it

Guilty Gear has to be one of the most in-depth fighting games ever.
every character has an interesting story, the character designs are unique,
and the moves are just phenominal!! i mean, its impossible to be not flashy in that game.
and i am also surprized that the series isnt more popular. its gained quite a small group of followers in Conneticut though.

I love Guilty Gear for the complex and solid storyline, the music influences on the characters and soundtracks (I am a metal fan myself), the character deasigns and the advanced gameplay.
Although Isuka is kinda disappointing in the lineage, I don't see myself quitting this game. Ever.

I think a couple of the things I love so much about the Guilty Gear series is that each character is extremely well developed and has a rich background story. Sometimes it feels like I'm playing in an interactive anime film rather than a game.

I also like how each character is totally different from the others, yet none are so overpowering that it causes an imbalance in the game. I also love how there are so many uses for the tension bar rather than the traditional overdrive (super) attack. More often than not (especially in tournaments), you'll see experienced players use the bar to set up and/or perform lethal custom combos rather than use it for single, high-powered attacks.

One of the best fighting game series ever.

    Nice review!
