Super Robot Wars tv Review

Story & Characters

Since there are so many titles in the series, it is hard to comment on the story. But it is usually in the point of view of a main character (there are some in the series without a main character like Alpha Gaiden as well) and the main character teams up with other robot pilots to defeat the foes trying to take over earth/destroy mankind. The main storyline may seem too typical and boring to be used in so many titles. (It's the series with the most titles I've seen) But the fun part comes in as in the process, different episodes of different robot anime are connected to make one main story line. Depending on the anime participating in a title, the story quality varies greatly. And also depending on the participating anime, sales may change as cerrtain anime fans may buy the title depending on the participation of that anime. (No wonder they always have to include some Gundam series) Of course robots and episodes of Banpresto's original robots (such as the main character's robot) are not to be missed as well.

To wrap things up, the rating of stories vary greatly upon participating anime. But it is certain that for all series if you've watched more robot anime, you'll be more entertained.

Art

Well, with so many titles in so many platforms, it'll be hard to judge the art as well. But some things to look at will be first, they're all SD so if you're in favor of real sized robots, you might be disappointed. Second, they tend to be not very 3D. Although 3D graphics have been used in some later games, even the latest title planned to come out (Alpha 3) isn't 3D. The main thing to see in the game is first, different weapons used by the SD robots, second, in-battle cut-ins of the characters when certain characters use certain weapons. And in some titles you can see movies (such as 1 vs 1 battle scenes, robot combining scenes, etc.) as well.

The graphics of Super Robot Wars cannot be really said as up-to-date with the latest technology. But its unique ways of showing different robots and weapons are a great pleasure to the eye for robot anime fans.

Sound

And yet again, the same thing applies for sound. Since audio devices of different consoles differ in quality, the BGM quality varies greatly as well. For example, BGM of Sega Saturn titles are better than PlayStaion 1 titles, and SRW for GameCube has better BGM than that of PlayStation 2 titles. For most later titles it is quite satisfying because they have over average BGM/sound and lots of different songs from different anime in which you can listen to the BGM of your choice throughout the whole battle.

And of course for the voice, it's just great with so many famous voice actors/actresses which is usually the same as the people who's done the original anime. And it's really true that if you shout out the lines of the pilots when they're fighting, the game becomes much more fun!

Presentation

It is actually really great looking at all those robots from different anime fight together in one game. (It probably costs Banpresto tons of money to buy all those licenses from different anime creators)

The difficulty and the length of the game varies greatly upon the title as well. Titles may vary from 3X episodes to 100+ episodes and the last boss may be killed with 1shot to a boss who can endure hundreds of attacks (maybe)

The game system is quite similar throughout the series except for minor(?) changes. The battlefield looks like a map of a SRPG with small robots all around the map. When you attack an enemy with a weapon, it changes to a 1 vs 1 (or until 1 vs 4 for Alpha 2) screen where one robot attacks and the other robot counters/evades/defends. And basically you become more powerful by leveling up pilots - pilots do more damage, evade/hit better, etc. as they level up - and you customize your robots using money (you gain money as you destroy enemy robots) - either customize weapons or stats (HP, EN, armor, mobility)-.

The game is quite interesting to watch as well. But since it's a game all about robots, it can only be recommended to robot anime fans (DUH)

The latest instalment to SRW (SRW J) for the GBA is pretty OK. Quite an okay story, but could be better. But what set it apart is its replayability...right now I'm on my 2nd playthrough just trying to get all the secrets ^_^

The best ones are OG 1, 2 & OGs, Alpha 3, Alpha Gaiden and Masoukishin
